Reusable product line software architectures and supporting components are the focus of an increasing number of software organizations attempting to reduce software costs. One essential attribute of a product line architecture is that it effectively isolate the logical, or static, aspects of the application from any product specific variations in the physical architecture, or execution environment. A primary element of this isolation is hardware and low-level software (e.g. operating system) independence. this paper describes our experiences on developing object-oriented physical architectures for large-scale reusable embedded systems, and on various ways that physical architecture attributes can be designed for flexibility without introducing volatility into the application architecture.

Integration of system components is a crucial challenge in the design of embedded real-time systems, as complex non-functional interdependencies may exist. [20] presented a framework, enabling autonomous verification of timing properties in the system itself. the work presented in this paper, takes that approach one step further, enabling autonomuous assignment of execution priorities under timing constraints. We present a distributed heuristic algorithm for the constraint statisfaction problem (CSP) of finding feasible priority assignments in static priority preemptive (SPP) scheduled hard real-time systems. the proposed heuristic considers end-to-end path latency constraints in arbitrary task graphs mapped on arbitrary platform graphs. © 2011 ieee.

distributed object computing a middleware such as CORBA, RMI, and DCOM have gained wide acceptance and has shielded programmers from many tedious and error-prone aspects of distributed programming. In particular, CORBA Event Service has been used extensively in embedded systems. In this paper, we propose an aspect oriented approach to develop synchronization code for distributed systems that use event service as the underlying communication middleware. Our approach is to factor out synchronization as a separate aspect, synthesize synchronization code and then compose it with the functional code. We use high-level "global invariants" to specify the synchronization policies which are then automatically translated into synchronization code for the underlying event service. To implement synchronization efficiently using, the event service, we propose enhancements to the semantics of the event service. Specifically, we define the notion of condition events and exactly, k semantics. Given these enhancements, we describe a synthesis procedure to translate global invariants into synchronization code based on events. We describe the implementation of the enhancements on the Tao's real-time Event Service. We present experimental results to demonstrate that the enhanced event service leads to more efficient implementation of synchronization. We feel that our methodology and the enhanced real-time Event Service will lead to more confident use of sophisticated synchronization policies in distributed object oriented systems.

Sensor webs are often composed of servers connected to distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that operate in open environments where operating conditions, workload, resource availability, and connectivity cannot be accurately characterized a priori. the South East Alaska MOnitoring Network for Science, Telecommunications, Education, and Research (SEAMONSTER) project exhibits many common system management and dynamic operation challenges for effective, autonomous system adaptation in a representative sensor web. these challenges cover both field operation (e.g., power management through system sleep/wake cycles and reaction to local environmental changes) and server operation (e.g., system adaptation for new/modified goals, resource allocation for a changing set of applications, and configuration changes for fluctuating workload). this paper presents the results of integrating and applying quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled component middle-ware, dynamic resource management, and autonomous agent technologies to address these challenges in SEAMONSTER.

Developing real-time software for large-scale distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to variabilities that arise from (1) integration with various subsystems based on different programming languages and hardware, OS, middleware platforms, (2) fine tuning the system to satisfy a range of customer requirements, such as various quality-of-service (QoS) properties, and (3) changing functional and QoS properties of the system based on available system resources. this paper describes our experience applying model-driven development (MDD) tools and QoS-enabled component middleware technologies to address domain- and middleware-specific variability, challenges in an inventory tracking system, which manages the storage and flow of items in warehouses. Our results show that (1) coherent integration of MDD tools and component middleware can provide a productive software process for developing DRE systems by modularizing and composing variability concerns and (2) significant challenges remain that must be overcome to apply these technologies to a broader range of DRE systems.

this paper examines the CORBA Naming, Event, Notification, Trading, time and Security Services, with the objective of identifying the issues that must be addressed in order make these Services fault-tolerant. the reliability considerations for each of these Services involves strategies for replicating the Service objects, and for keeping the states of the replicas consistent. Of particular interest are the sources of non-determinism in each of these Services, along with the means for addressing the non-deterministic behavior in the interests of ensuring strong fault tolerance.

Dynamic software reconfiguration is a useful tool to adapt and maintain software systems. In most approaches, the system has to be stopped while the reconfiguration is in progress. this is not suitable for real-time systems, even on small-embedded systems. Timing constraints must be met even while the system is reconfiguring. Our approach is based on the realtime middleware OSA+. Our main objective is to be able to reconfigure services during run-time, with a predictable and predefined blackout time (the time the systems does not react due to the reconfiguration). three different approaches concerning the blocking or non-blocking state of a service are presented. these approaches can be used to realize a tradeoff between the reconfiguration time and the blackout time.

Software component techniques have been widely used for enhancement and the cost reduction of software development. We herein introduce a component system with a real-time operating system (RTOS). A case study of a two-wheeled inverted pendulum balancing robot with the component system is presented. the component system can deal with RTOS resources, such as tasks and semaphores, as components. Moreover, a trace functionality which is a new functionality to confirm the state of components or calling components without modification of C source code is introduced. © 2010 ieee.

Many real-time systems use preemptive priorities in their internals to guarantee certain real-time performance. this includes technologies that range from RTSJ (the real- time Specification for Java) to middleware like real-time CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) which offers additional models and policies that blend client and server information. this decision makes easier the integration of real-time acceptance tests and dispatching policies in these kinds of infrastructures. In this paper, we analyze different tradeoffs that emerge from the definition of different propagation models for distributed real-time Java. the paper covers technological integration aspects, impact on interfaces, and other practical issues more related to the performance that this model offers to a real-time application. © 2010 ieee.

Predictable deployment and configuration (D&C) of components in response to dynamic environmental changes or system mode changes is essential for ensuring open distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system real-time QoS. this paper provides three contributions to research on the predictability of D&C for component-based open DRE systems. First, we describe how the dependency relationships among different components and their criticality levels can cause deployment order inversion of tasks, which impedes deployment predictability. Second, we describe how to minimize D&C latency of mission-critical tasks with a multi-graph dependency tracing and graph recomposition algorithm called CaDAnCE. third, we empirically evaluate the effectiveness of CaDAnCE on a representative open DRE system case study based on NASA Earth Science Enterprise's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission system. Our results show that CaDAnCE avoids deployment order inversion while incurring negligible (<1%) performance overhead, thereby significantly improving D&C predictability.
