General-purpose middleware must often be specialized for resource-constrained, real-time and embedded systems to improve their response-times, reliability, memory footprint, and even power consumption. Software engineering techniques, such as aspect-oriented programming (AOP), feature-oriented programming (FOP), and reflection make the specialization task simpler, albeit still requiring the system developer to manually identify the system invariants, and sources of performance and memory footprint bottlenecks that determine the required specializations. Specialization reuse is also hampered due to a lack of common taxonomy to document the recurring specializations. this paper presents the GeMS (Generative Middleware Specialization) framework to address these challenges. We present results of applying GeMS to a distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) system case study that depict a 21-35% reduction in footprint, and a 36% improvement in performance while simultaneously alleviating 97% of the developer efforts in specializing middleware. © 2011 ieee.

As ITS technology evolves, very large volume of traffic data can be obtained in real-time. Traffic data are continuously produced and they can be considered as a kind of stream data. Currently, such traffic data are not maintained permanently because of the storage limitations of operational systems. therefore, it was impossible to compare temporal historical patterns over long time periods. In this paper, we propose a traffic data management scheme, which can handle historical data as well as current data. the proposed scheme is based on the GALIS architecture, which is a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture that consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. Some experimental results showing performance factors are also explained.

AUTOSAR as specified in its current version fosters timing-constraints at application level to support the development of real-time automotive applications. However, the standard's actual specification does not consider any timing information for its Basic Software. In consequence, the over-all timing-behavior of software running at a specific system node can not be calculated and thus validated at development-time. Even worse, any exchange or modification of Basic Software modules induces unpredictable alteration in system timing, and may even. lead to a severe miss of execution deadlines. Within this paper we solve this issue by using a component based Basic Software architecture, as much as timing-aware software composition for Basic Software components. We therefore introduce timing contracts as enhancement for existing interface contracts, specify a tinting annotation language on a conceptual level, and demonstrate how to capitalize on our approach by calculating timings within composed Basic Software architectures at development time.

We present in this paper an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer (UDTS), this mechanism captures the state of the network and, based on its observation, estimates the waiting time that maximizes the efficiency of a round-based protocol regarding the number and/or the duration of its computational rounds. An UDTS is not an abstract oracle, it is implementable and reveals the properties of the network. We illustrate our approach by addressing the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems equipped with an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer the proposed protocol is conceptually simple. It benefits from the UDTS predictions to implement different convergence and decision conditions. this allows the protocol to be efficient in number and/or duration of rounds for stable networks.

Allowing real-time systems to autonomously evolve or self-organize during their life-time poses challenges on guidance of such a process. Hard real-time systems must never break their timing constraints even if undergoing a change in configuration. We propose to enhance future real-time systems with an in-system model-based timing analysis engine capable of deciding whether a configuration is feasible to be executed. this engine is complemented by a formal procedure guiding system evolution. the distributed implementation of a runtime environment (RTE) implementing this procedure imposes two key questions of consistency: How do we ensure model consistency across the distributed system and how do we ensure consistency of the actual system behavior with the model? We present a synchronization protocol solving the model consistency issues and provide a discussion on implications of different mode-change protocols on consistency of the system with its model. © 2010 ieee.

object-oriented programming is a popular approach for modem software design in many fields. However, OOP extension for embedded parallel processing still has conceptual and practical problems. the paper considers concepts of merging OOP with parallel processing. Process-centric view of parallel OOP is presented. the VSIPL signal and image processing library standard is an example. Concepts of Parallel VSIPL with OOP features are proposed. they are based on shared-data rather then message-passing paradigm, on Asynchronous Growing Processes formal model of parallel computations and Shared Data object Interface (SDOI) middleware.

the energy efficiency becomes one of the most important concerns in mobile electronic systems design with mandatory requirements for low energy consumption, long battery life and low heat dissipation. Dynamic Power Management (DPM) and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS or DVS) are two widely applied system level techniques to conserve system-wide power consumption. In the context of hard real-time systems, however, DPM and DVS have to be used with great caution in terms of timing constraints. In this article, we study the combined application of DPM and DVS for component oriented systems with hard real-time tasks and propose a simulated annealing based optimization algorithm and its online execution with constant complexity at each scheduling point. Additionally, our approach considers multiple low power states (sleep states) with non-negligible switching overhead. the experimental results show that our approach can achieve almost an optimal solution. © 2012 ieee.

Complex real-time software systems require an active fault management capability. While testing, verification and validation schemes and their constant evolution help improve the dependability of these systems, an active fault management strategy is essential to potentially mitigate the unacceptable behaviors at run-time. In our work we have applied the experience gained from the field of Systems Health Management towards component-based software systems. the software components interact via well-defined concurrency patterns and are executed on a real-time component framework built upon ARINC-653 platform services. In this paper, we present the lessons learned in architecting and applying a two-level health management strategy to assemblies of software components. © 2012 ieee.

Adaptation to changing environmental conditions is a major challenge for most distributed applications. the service-oriented programming paradigm leads to an increasing number of applications that are not only meant to provide services through standard user-interfaces hosted on desktop computers, but are to be accessible from small mobile devices as well. the integration of the different programming environments on desktop (i.e.;Windows) and mobile computers (i.e.;Java Micro Editions - J2ME) puts an extra burden on the programmer of this kind of applications. In addition, unstable conditions caused by modem infrastructures for mobile applications and varying properties of computational devices have to be considered during run-time of the application. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism for adaptive computing. Within this paper, we elaborate on the extension of our previously developed Adaptive .Net framework towards CORBA and Java. With the introduction of new connector types, our framework is able to provide seamless support for adaptive, heterogeneous applications based on .NET Java, and CORBA. In context of our framework, applications consist of components which interact via so-called connectors. the component/connector model allows for mediating between component frameworks (Java, NET) as well as between communication protocols (CORBA, NET Remoting, sockets, etc.). Within the paper we give an overview of our adaptation framework Adaptive .NET, that includes a monitoring infrastructure, a reconfiguration platform and tools for building adaptive applications. Using a proof-of-concept application, we experimentally evaluate our connector architecture and study interoperability of Java, CORBA, and .NET objects.

the development of distributed systems software poses unique challenges due to the diversity of hardware, software, and network protocols on the market today. Achieving interoperability with legacy systems and between systems provided by different vendors has, in the past, required the development of intricate interface specifications or proprietary bridging software. real-time, embedded distributed systems introduce additional performance and resource requirements. real-time systems require the ability to schedule tasks, predict the performance of those tasks, and perhaps most important, predict how the system will react to an overload situation or resource failure. Embedded systems are often characterized by resource constraints, diverse operating systems, and non-TCP/IP transports. Most real-time and/or embedded systems share the requirement of reasonably, high performance. High performance systems seek the lowest possible communication overhead and streamlined, optimized software layers. this paper discusses how CORBA has evolved to meet all these requirements, and uses ORBexpress CORBA from objective Interface as a reference implementation of real-time, high performance CORBA for embedded developers.
