In this paper we present the Java Fieldbus Control Framework (JFCF) which provides an object oriented programming framework for the rapid creation of concurrent control tasks for fieldbus-based automation systems. Our framework is implemented in Java which is going to become more popular in the field of industrial control, due to the advent of dedicated Java real-time systems and the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). We further describe an example application built within our framework consisting of an open Java control for a CANopen automation system featuring a SCARA robot arm, a transfer system and further peripheral fieldbus devices. Four independent tasks run concurrently to establish the overall automation process. In order to meet real-time requirements, the framework will be extended to comply to the RTSJ in the future. the reusability of object oriented software and the portability of Java code results in a reduction of costs for software creation and maintenance.

In this paper, we describe our currently ongoing work to build object-oriented distributed middleware for networked home appliances, which are executed on commodity operating systems. the current prototype has adopted HAVi(Home Audio/Video Interoperability) as distributed middleware for home appliances. We have implemented HAVi in Java, and has adopted Linux as an operating system. Since Java and Linux axe running on a variety of platforms, our software can be ported to a target system without modification. therefore, it becomes easy to develop a new application on a standard PC platform. the paper describes the design issues and the implementation of our system. We have actually implemented several programs that emulate home appliances such as a digital television. Also, we present some experiences with the current prototype.

For future applications, it is important to develop Systems using small objects. Such systems must be able to provide uninterrupted services even when some small objects stop. Replicating such objects is one way to do this. However introducing some type of redundancy into systems generally adds some overhead. Our proposed model reduces this overhead. It is implemented with multi-threaded execution for applications in actual systems. We measured the performance of an implementation for applications connected to databases. the results show that the overhead for ordinary execution and the time required to switch the replicas are both acceptably small. this technique will therefore play an important role in future systems.

the complexity of software in systems like aerospace vehicles has reached the point where new techniques are needed to ensure system dependability while improving the productivity of developers. One possible approach is to use precisely defined software execution platforms that (1) enable the system to be composed from separate components, (2) restrict component interactions and prevent fault propagation, and (3) whose compositional properties are well-known. In this paper we describe the initial steps towards building a platform that combines component-based software construction with hard real-time operating system services. Specifically, the paper discusses how the CORBA component Model (CCM) could be combined with the ARINC-653 platform services and the lessons learned from this experiment. the results point towards both extending the CCM as well as revising the ARINC-653. © 2010 ieee.

distributed event-based systems (DEBS) are gaining increasing attention in new application areas such as transport information monitoring, event-driven supply-chain management and ubiquitous sensor-rich environments. However, as DEBS increasingly enter the enterprise and commercial domains, performance and quality of service issues are becoming a major concern. While numerous approaches to performance modeling and evaluation of conventional request/reply-based distributed systems are available in the literature, no general approach exists for DEBS. this paper is the first to provide a comprehensive methodology for workload characterization and performance modeling of DEBS. A workload model of a generic DEBS is developed and operational analysis techniques are used to characterize the system traffic and derive an approximation for the mean event delivery latency. Following this, a modeling technique is presented that can be used for accurate performance prediction. the paper is concluded with a case study of a real life system demonstrating the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed approach.

Knowledge is the source of intelligence and both knowledge representation and knowledge management are crucial for intelligent systems. Well employed knowledge helps such systems become aware of situations, recognize states and eventually respond to changes. this paper presents our vision of knowledge representation and awareness in mobile swarm systems formed as open-ended ensembles of special autonomic components. Such components encapsulate rules, constraints and mechanisms for self-management and acquire and process knowledge about themselves, other service components and their environment. In this paper, we present our approach to high-level model of structured knowledge and a formal model of awareness in such autonomic service-component ensembles. © 2011 ieee.

Recent years have witnessed the emergence and rapid growth of distributed service infrastructures such as mobile ad hoc networks, P2P PlanetLab and Grids. In such distributed infrastructures, an entity needs to utilize the services provided by other entities or the infrastructures, where trust is an important factor. there exists a gap between current trust research focusing limitedly on specific applications and a systematic, adaptable and customizable trust framework. the first limitation of current research is the lack of characterizing service-specific trust features. the second limitation lies in the restricted evaluation formulae of trust values. the trust value formulae are usually drawn from a particular mathematical model and may not satisfy some desirable properties. the third limitation is the lack of flexibility and adaptability of trust models. In this paper a comprehensive trust model is presented to address these limitations and provide a trust-based environment for distributed service infrastructures. Our simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the trust model against various attacks.

the interoperability of Web services has resulted in its adoption for recently-emerging cloud platforms. SOAP (Simple object Access Protocol) is considered as the main platform independent communication tool for the Cloud Web service. Generally, Cloud Web services suffer performance bottlenecks and congestions that are mainly caused by the encoding of XML messages as they are bigger than the real payloads. In this paper, Fractal clustering model is proposed to compute the Fractal clustering similarity of SOAP messages in order to cluster them and enable the aggregation of SOAP messages to significantly reduce the size of the aggregated SOAP messages. Furthermore, as Fractal is a well-known as a time-consuming technique especially for large dataset, two fast Fractal clustering models have been proposed that are aiming to reduce the required clustering time. the proposed fast Fractal models have tremendously outperformed the classical Fractal model in terms of the processing time and have outperformed both K-means and PCA combined with K-means models in terms of both the processing time and SOAP messages size reduction.

the Function Block (FB) has been defined by the international Electro-technical Commission (IEC) as the basic construct for the development of reusable, interoperable, distributed control applications. Complete applications can be defined in the design level as networks of interconnected FBs. For these design models to be automatically converted to implementation ones, adopting the model integrated computing paradigm, an appropriate implementation meta-model should be defined. In this paper we describe two alternatives for the implementation of FB design models. the first one adopts the straight forward transformation of the FB design model to a high level language (C++, Java) implementation model. the second approach utilizes UML-RT models as an intermediate representation towards the final implementation model. Both approaches support the dynamic re-configuration of the control application and exploit our extensions to the IEC Execution Control Chart notation, to improve the expressiveness of the design model and the efficiency of the implementation one.

An open distributed control system (DCS), which consists of many devices and an open network interconnecting them, is now used in many automation areas. For assuring the control performance under the heavy traffic on the network, the simulation of a DCS is strongly needed. For this purpose, we propose an object-oriented design pattern approach as a uniform, efficient and accurate method of modeling and simulating a DCS. Four design patterns are newly proposed. Device-Constructor and Composite-Device-Constructor patterns describe classes and mechanisms for uniformly structuring device models composed of many kinds of sensors and actuators. Statechart pattern defines classes and the state-transition execution mechanism for realizing the behavior of sensors and actuators in a device. While Event-Chain pattern defines classes and the event dispatching mechanism among sensors and actuators intra-device and inter-device. the systematic implementation procedures from these patterns to the executable Java code of the DCS simulation model are also discussed. Finally, the effectiveness of our approach was proved by developing the Java-based DCS modeler and simulator used in building automation area.
