the rapid growth in the demand of embedded systems and the increased complexity of embedded software pose an urgent need for advanced embedded software development techniques. Software technology is shifting toward semi-automated code generation and integration of systems from components. component-based development (CBD) techniques can significantly reduce the time and cost for developing software systems. However, there are some difficult problems with the CBD approach. component identification and retrieval as well as component composition require extensive knowledge of the components. Designers need to go through a steep learning curve in order to effectively compose a system out of available components. In this paper, we discuss an integrated mechanism for component-based development of embedded software. We develop an On-line Repository for Embedded Software (ORES) to facilitate component management and retrieval. ORES uses an ontology-based approach to facilitate repository browsing and effective search. Based on ORES, we develop the code template approach to facilitate semi-automated component composition. A code template can be instantiated by different sets of components and, thus, offers more flexibility and configurability and better reuse. Another important aspect in embedded software is the nonfunctional requirements and properties. In ORES, we capture nonfunctional properties of components and provide facilities for the analysis of overall system properties.

this paper presents a framework for generic modeling of distributed embedded applications. An application is decomposed into services and mapped on a set of distributed nodes, whereas each node hosts one or more services. Each service is described by four interfaces: a real-time input/output, a configuration and planning (CP), and a diagnostic and management (DM) interface. the overall application is described by a cluster configuration description that specifies the interaction of services within and across nodes. the application requirements, the service properties of a node, and the interaction of the services as well as the application mapping are described formally with XML descriptions. the XML format allows a language-neutral and extensible semantic description of interfaces supporting the implementation of context-aware tools for modeling, scheduling, monitoring, simulation, and validation. A central concept of the model is the interface file system (IFS) that acts as a distributed shared memory and transparently implements the interfaces to services from other nodes. In principle, the communication system that updates the data in the IFS data is not bound to a specific implementation as long as it fulfills the given timing requirements. the presented concepts are applied in a case study that uses the time-triggered fieldbus protocol TTP/A for the implementation of a small sensor fusion application.

this paper addresses the practical implementation of means of tolerating residual software faults in complex software systems, especially concurrent and distributed ones. there are several inherent difficulties in implementing such fault-tolerant software systems, including the controlled use of extra redundancy and the mixture of different design concerns. In an attempt to minimise these difficulties, we present a generic implementation approach, composed of a multi-layered reference architecture, a configuration method and an architectural pattern. We evaluate our implementation approach using an industrial control application whose control software we equip with the ability to tolerate a variety of software faults. the preliminary evidence shows that our approach can simplify the implementation process, reduce repetitive development effort and provide high flexibility through a generic interface for a wide range of fault tolerance schemes.

A transactional agent is a mobile agent to manipulate objects distributed on computers with some type of commitment condition. For example, a transactional agent commits only if at least one object could be successfully manipulated in the at-least-one commitment condition. Computers may stop by fault while networks are assumed to be reliable. In the client-server model, servers can be fault-tolerant according to traditional replication and checkpointing technologies. However, an application program cannot be performed if a client computer is faulty An application program can be performed on another operational computer even if a computer is faulty in the transactional agent model. For example, a transactional agent can move to another operational computer if some destination computer where the agent to move is faulty there are kinds of faulty computers for a transactional agent, current, destination, and sibling computers where a transactional agent now exist, will move, and has visited, respectively. We discuss how the transactinal agent can be tolerant of the types of faults. We show how a program reliably manipulating objects can be realized in a mobile agent in presence of computer faults.

Complex real-time embedded systems require guarantees regarding the assurance of their timing requirements. Such guarantees can be derived using advanced design and analysis methods. Many design solutions address the complexity of these systems using component-based techniques. In this paper we focus on resource sharing in component-based systems with several components executing on a multi-core processor. We consider that the tasks of each component can be scheduled on any core with the possibility of two tasks belonging to the same component executing in parallel. We propose the Parallel Hierarchical Resource Policy, a novel resource sharing policy for multi-core component-based systems. We also develop a detailed response-time based schedulability analysis for the individual components and for the composed system, assuming that intra- and inter-component resource sharing takes place. © 2011 ieee.

the size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high dependability and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. this platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we describe a fast CPU simulator and controlled object simulation for testing control software in a virtual software execution environment. the virtual environment integrates a CPU simulator and a controlled object simulator in order to test functional behaviors of embedded control software. the environment enables the developer to test control software at the same execution rate as a real system without the source codes. this is very helpful because in this industry, not all of the source codes are provided. © 2011 ieee.

though Java is expected to have a wide range of embedded applications, there exist some problems in applying Java to real-time systems. the hybrid architecture, in which the Java runtime environment is implemented on a real-time OS, parts of the application requiring real-time properties are implemented on the real-time OS, and parts of the application requiring GUI features, extension of features, and replacing of programs should be implemented on the Java runtime environment, is practical. In this paper, we present interface specifications between Java threads and real-time tasks based the hybrid architecture we build, called JTRON specification, and experiences based on application development using its implementation. First, cooperative computation models between Java threads and realtime tasks in the architecture are described. Based on these models, we categorize three types of communication interface between Java threads and real-time tasks: real-time OS attach class, shared object with explicit locking mechanism, and stream-based communication. By standardizing the interface, not only the Java program, but also the real-time program becomes portable and reusable. Two of the three types of the interface can be applied to other real-time OSes also.

System execution traces are useful artifacts for validating distributed system quality-of-service (QoS) properties, such as end-to-end response time, throughput, and service time. With proper planning during development phase of the software lifecycle, it is possible to ensure such traces contain required properties to facilitate analysis for QoS validation. In some case, however, it is not possible to ensure system execution traces contain the necessary properties for QoS analysis. this paper presents the System Execution Trace Adaptation Framework (SETAF) for adapting system execution traces to support analysis of QoS properties. It also presents results from applying SETAF to externally developed applications. the results show that it is possible to validate QoS properties by automatically adapting system execution traces at analysis time instead of modifying the application's existing source code. © 2012 ieee.

Performance analysis tools for enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems require instrumenting heterogeneous sources (such as application- and system-level hardware and software resources). Traditional techniques for software instrumentation of such systems, however, are tightly coupled to system design and metrics of interest. It is therefore hard for system testers to increase their knowledge base and analytical capabilities for enterprise DRE system performance using existing instrumentation techniques when metrics of interest are not known during initial system design. this paper provides two contributions to research on software instrumentation for enterprise DRE systems. First, it presents OASIS, which is service-oriented middleware for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems to collect and extract metrics without design time knowledge of which metrics are collected. Second, this paper empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to a representative enterprise DRE system show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control the overhead incurred via instrumentation. © 2010 ieee.

In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. the architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. the sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks. © 2011 ieee.
