Service oriented architecture (SOA) allows multiple and heterogeneous data resources to be integrated within a single service while hiding the implementation details and formats of data resources from users of the service. However, data sources for a service are often distributed geographically and connected with long-latency networks; time and bandwidth consumption of data transportation may have an impact on the system performance. Dynamic data replication is a practical solution to this problem. By replicating data copies to appropriate sites, this approach aims to reduce time and bandwidth consumptions over networks. Existing strategies for dynamic replication are typically based on so-called single-location algorithms for identifying a single site for data replication. In this paper we discuss the issues with single-location strategies in large-scale data integration applications, and examine potential multiple-location schemes. Dynamic multiple-location replication is NP-complete in nature. We therefore transform the multiple-location problem into several classical mathematical problems with different parameter settings, for which efficient approximation algorithms exist. Experimental results indicate that unlike single-location strategies our multiple-location schemes are efficient with respect to access latency and bandwidth consumption, especially when the requesters of a data set are distributed over a large scale of locations.

Many research works have focused on developing multimedia applications such as video conferencing and video-on-demand (VoD). From this trend, we see that the VoD service will become the main issue in future. However, service providers don't efficiently provide VoD services for a great number of clients yet. One of the reasons is the high cost in providing VoD services. Because a multimedia service consumes wide bandwidth in spite of great advances of video compression, network bandwidth resource must significantly be spent to maintain multiple clients concurrently. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new transmission method using the broadcast, named as a poly harmonic staggered broadcasting (PHSB) method. the proposed method is an efficient transmission method that has a simple structure of the staggered broadcasting method and substantially improved bandwidth efficiency of the poly harmonic broadcasting method. the numerical results show that the viewer's waiting time of the PHSB method is close to the waiting time of the harmonic broadcasting method which theoretically has the best bandwidth efficiency. Furthermore, the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted by adjusting the short front part of a video size.

Besides the complexity of grid application programming, achieving high performance has become a real challenge in large scale grid systems mainly because of the high latencies and unpredictable communication paths. We follow the idea of shared data programming in grid environments and we design a replication component for a shared data programming framework with dynamic replication capabilities. We define several replication policies that are dynamically used during the application life-cycle in order to minimize the communication cost and provide better performance. We evaluate several application scenarios in order to prove that dynamic policy based replication can improve the overall application performance and reduce resource access time.

In object-oriented real-time computing scenarios, particularly where Corba is used in embedded systems with resource constraints, developers and system architects often utilize Corba object references as authorization tokens. this paper investigates the security of this method in principle, and it presents the results of the analysis of the work and computing effort necessary for a potential attacker to fabricate Corba object references to existing objects for the purpose of illegitimately gaining access to these objects at the instance of seven widely used Corba products.

this paper describes an extension to the component-based programming model to support real-time dynamic guarantee for distributed applications. the extended model aims to include an acceptance tests to component-based servers at bind time. We present the mapping of our model to the CORBA component Model, the architecture to support the dynamic guarantee in component-based middleware, the implementation of this architecture in CIAO (component Integrated ACE ORB) and the result of experiments run to evaluate the cost of the mechanisms used.

Although distributed real-time (RT) systems are intrinsically complex to develop and maintain, the use of certain object-oriented (OO) technologies such as CORBA and CORBA-RT facilitates those tasks. this is the main reason why these technologies are becoming increasingly popular. Moreover, CORBA is complemented with additional services that solve specific requirements for some applications, so developers may concentrate on the application functionality. Following this approach, this paper presents a new service that allows the synchronous scheduling of different activities in a distributed RT system in a simple and flexible way. this paper also explains how this service can be used for optimizing that access to shared resources in a distributed system and presents several experimental data that show the service performance.

We propose a new, minimal specification for real-time Java,for safety critical applications. the intention is to provide a profile that supports programming of applications that can be validated against safety critical standards such as DO-178B[15]. the proposed profile is in line with the Java specification request JSR-302: Safety Critical Java Technology, which is still under discussion. In contrast to the current direction of the expert group for the JSR-302 we do not subset the rather complex real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Nevertheless, our profile can be implemented on top of an RTSJ compliant JVM.

Requirements of High Integrity systems now encompass distribution mechanisms along with strong functional and non-functional features (run-time support for hardware, dependability, safety, analyzability). In this paper, we show how model processing help addressing such needs. We present a generic distribution model suitable for High Integrity systems, and demonstrate how a high-level modeling deployment view allows one to greatly reduce the model complexity. Finally, we conclude by assessing a case study.

Many emerging applications operate on continuous unbounded data streams and need real-time data services. Providing deadline guarantees for queries over dynamic data streams is a challenging problem due to bursty stream rates and time-varying contents. this paper presents a prediction-based QoS management scheme for real-time data stream query processing in distributed environments. the prediction-based QoS management scheme features query workload estimators, which predict the query workload using execution time profiling and input data sampling. In this paper, we apply the prediction-based technique to select the proper propagation schemes for data streams and intermediate query results in distributed environments. the performance study demonstrates that the proposed solution tolerates dramatic workload fluctuations and saves significant amounts of CPU time and network bandwidth with little overhead.

As quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middleware technologies gain widespread acceptance to build distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, it becomes necessary for these technologies to support real-time publish/subscribe services, which is a key requirement of a large class of DRE systems. To date there have been very limited systematic studies evaluating different approaches to integrating real-time publish/subscribe services in QoS-enabled component middleware. this paper makes two contributions in addressing these key research questions. First, we evaluate the pros and cons of three different design alternatives for integrating publish/subscrib e services within QoS-enabled component middleware. Second, we empirically evaluate the performance of our container-based design and compare it with mature object-oriented real-time publish/subscribe implementations. Our studies reveal that both the performance and scalability of our design and implementation are comparable to its object-oriented counterpart, which provides a key guidance to the suitability of component technologies for DRE systems.
