In developing multi-UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system, a simulation environment is essential to verify the functionalities of the whole system with higher productivity and reduced risks of accidents. Simulations of multi-UAV systems are usually accomplished by using distributed systems where multiple standalone simulators are connected via a network. thus, in order to achieve an improved reality in such distributed simulation environments, the whole multi-UAV simulator should be guaranteed real-time and synchronized behaviors among the connected systems. In this paper, we discuss about the necessity of two important real-time features, i.e., the periodicity of computations and the clock synchronization among standalone simulators. We also propose an architecture based on TMO(time-triggered and Message-triggered object) model as a multi-UAV simulation platform with our preliminary experimental results showing its potential feasibilities.

the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 reviews the terminology of time Petri nets and the definitions of their state spaces. the classical "state classes" construction, preserving markings and LTL properties, is explained in section 3, and its properties discussed. Section 4 explains the richer "strong state classes" abstraction, that allows in addition to decide state reachability properties. Section 5 discusses preservation of branching properties and explains the "atomic state classes" construction. Finally, section 7 discusses a number of related issues and recent results, including extensions of these methods to handle enriched classes of time Petri nets.

Recent advances in software processes and artifacts for automating middleware configurations in distributed realtime and embedded (DRE) systems are starting to address the complexities faced by system developers in dealing with the flexibility and configurability provided by contemporary middleware. Despite the benefits of these new processes, there remain significant challenges in verifying their correctness, and validating their effectiveness in meeting the end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements of DRE systems. this paper addresses this problem by describing how model-checking and structural correspondence can be used to verify the correctness of a middleware QoS configuration process that uses model-based graph transformations at its core. Next, it provides empirical proof to validate the effectiveness of our technique to meet the end-to-end QoS requirements in the context of a representative DRE system.

this paper proposes a new approach to teach the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge informally via robotic games. In this approach, a robotic playground is built to provide a hands-on programming and playing experience with robots controlled by Service-oriented computing (SOC) software, which is based on a new approach that uses reusable services (components) with standard interfaces and platform-independent interoperability. Services in the repository are annotated with STEM knowledge to enforce the required contents. In this way, students can learn computing and STEM in an entertaining manner.

In this paper, a role-based access control (KBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called multi-role based access control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. the object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data; 2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses; and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.

the increasing complexity of modern real-time systems and the increasing need for real-time behavior in a broad range of applications such as network- centric warfare, telephony and stock trading has encouraged many developers to consider using real-time Javatrade for systems previously only written in C, Ada or assembly language. the RTSJ standard defines the baseline requirements for a real-time Java implementation, and commercial Java virtual machine (JVM) implementations include additional features such as real-time garbage collectors and real-time compilation (compiling from Java to native code in a manner compatible with real-time), which make the use of Java practical for these applications. this paper describes some of the challenges that will be faced by implementers of the RTSJ standard based on our experience with implementing IBM's RTSJ-compliant J2SE Java virtual machine, called IBM reg WebSphere reg real-time.

General-purpose middleware must often be specialized for resource-constrained, real-time and embedded systems to improve their response-times, reliability, memory footprint, and even power consumption. Software engineering techniques, such as aspect-oriented programming (AOP), feature-oriented programming (FOP), and reflection make the specialization task simpler, albeit still requiring the system developer to manually identify the system invariants, and sources of performance and memory footprint bottlenecks that determine the required specializations. Specialization reuse is also hampered due to a lack of common taxonomy to document the recurring specializations. this paper presents the GeMS (Generative Middleware Specialization) framework to address these challenges. We present results of applying GeMS to a distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) system case study that depict a 21-35% reduction in footprint, and a 3̃6% improvement in performance while simultaneously alleviating 9̃7% of the developer efforts in specializing middleware.

Knowing the program timing characteristics is fundamental to the successful design and execution of real-time systems. A critical timing measure is the worst-case execution time (WCET) of a program. Often, timing analysis in industry is done by measurements. Recently, tools for deriving WCET estimates have reached the market. With more widespread use of WCET tools in industry, the usability aspects of these tools will be of growing importance. In this paper we discuss usability using the results of the WCET Challenge 2006, which was the first event that compared different WCET tools using the same set of benchmarks. Another source of input to the discussion are experiences from industrial case-studies of WCET tools. Finally, we point out some areas for future research and development for WCET analysis methods and tools.

A software partitioning has been used to develop safety-critical systems in recent years. In addition, software component technologies supporting a software partitioning have been developed. this paper describes the new component technology for embedded software that requires memory protection, which is one of the important features for the partitioning. HR-TECS is a new component technology based on the real-time operating system supporting the static memory layout. Developers can easily allocate components to partitions in order to protect memory areas. In addition, HR-TECS supports inter-partition communications so that developers can implement components without consideration for inter-partition communications. the results of evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of HR-TECS.

Testing services offered at runtime is gaining more and more importance. this arises because the number of applications in which services don't know each other a priori grows and occurring faults can cause high costs. the approach proposed here uses testing to assure QoS properties like e.g. real-time features and functionality of services. A challenge of testing is not to overload the service providing systems. Furthermore tests also have to adapt automatically to the currently offered services as well as to the usage of these services. We present an approach for testing services, which fulfills these challenges and is based on a genetic algorithm. To rate a functional result, the majority vote is used.
