Building middleware for distributed applications is a complex task, mixing antagonistic concerns: heterogeneity, performance, reliability, quality of services. Optimization and fine-tuning of middleware for a particular application is even a harder task, usually done manually or through complex design patterns. the advent of "schizophrenic" middleware which separates concerns between distribution model, communication protocols, and their implementation by refining the definition and role of "personalities" brought some elements to solve this problem by enabling full tailoring of the middleware by the developer. In this paper we extend this approach to full automation by generating middleware from an architectural model of the system expressed in a modeling language. this enables precise tuning and configuration of the middleware by generating exactly the required code, prior to runtime. We finally show how this approach fits the requirements of high-integrity or real-time distributed systems.

this paper is about designing and constructing real-time systems, using mechanisms that support self-organization. objects make a popular and convenient paradigm for keeping persistent data encapsulated with the operations that act on it, but they tend to omit what is arguably the most important aspect of real-time systems, which is time. there are other mechanisms that do model time, but few of them make time the central part of the programming model. In this short position paper, we offer two alternative(but complementary) approaches to modeling time (and other resource dependencies) in real-time systems, which should lead to more effective designs, since the timing and other interactions can be modeled sooner, and in any case, provide models with a different emphasis. We also make suggestions about the expressive language that can be used for the suggested kinds of modeling, and the infrastructure that underlies the process, which provides the computational reflection that enables self-organization.

Complex real-time embedded systems require guarantees regarding the assurance of their timing requirements. Such guarantees can be derived using advanced design and analysis methods. Many design solutions address the complexity of these systems using component-based techniques. In this paper we focus on resource sharing in component-based systems with several components executing on a multi-core processor. We consider that the tasks of each component can be scheduled on any core with the possibility of two tasks belonging to the same component executing in parallel. We propose the Parallel Hierarchical Resource Policy, a novel resource sharing policy for multi-core component-based systems. We also develop a detailed response-time based schedulability analysis for the individual components and for the composed system, assuming that intra- and inter-component resource sharing takes place.

Effective resource management for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to their unique characteristics, including (1) constraints in multiple resources and (2) highly fluctuating resource availability and input workload. DRE systems can benefit from a middleware framework that enables adaptive resource management algorithms to ensure application QoS requirements are met. this paper identifies key challenges in designing and extending resource allocation algorithms for DRE systems. We present an empirical study of bin-packing algorithms enhanced to meet these challenges. Our analysis identifies input application patterns that help generate appropriate heuristics for using these algorithms effectively in DRE systems.

Current RTSJ (the real-time specification for Java) threading model is dualized: programmers have to decide between the high predictability offered by its region-based model and the flexibility offered by its garbage-collected model. Up to now, there is not a unique type of thread that offers, in a single entity, the highest predictability, and flexibility together. this lack has serious consequences on the programmer who has to deal with new and sometimes non-trivial mechanisms, such as queues of objects or the no-heap real-time threads, to avoid the priority inversion caused by the garbage collector, hi order to tackle these issues and provide an improved and more generalized programming model, the authors propose an extension to the current threading model that unifies the RTSJ threading model: the realtimethread++ extension.

Scaling in hardware integration process results in IC-process geometry reductions, lower operating voltages and increased clock speeds. this paper first surveys the reliability obstacles these developments give rise to and then points out that computing systems can no longer be safely assumed to fail only by crashing. Yet this assumption is at the core of primary-backup replication which the literature presents as the appropriate, and hence the most widely used, strategy for time-critical fault-tolerant applications. the paper then observes that building computing nodes with announced crash failure mode is a promising way forward to deal with the emerging reliability challenges. Work carried out to assure such a failure mode has also been briefly surveyed.

We propose an incremental compaction algorithm. Our compactor selects a continuous area of the heap and evacuates it by incrementally copying all objects in the area to the rest of the heap. After all objects have been copied, our compactor incrementally updates pointers pointing into the evacuated area. During these processes, each original object and its copy are kept consistent. We implemented the compactor together with a snapshot garbage collector in the KVM. Our measurements show that (1) the largest free chunk is almost always more than 20% as large as the entire heap when the heap is twice as large as the maximum amount of live objects, (2) the runtime overhead is less than 20%, and (3) the maximum pause time caused by the compactor is comparable to that caused by the snapshot collector.

Reusable libraries are problematic for real-time software in Java. Using Java's standard class library, for example, demands meticulous coding and testing to avoid response time spikes and garbage collection. We propose two design requirements for reusable libraries in real-time systems: worst-case execution time (WCET) bounds and worst- case memory consumption bounds. Furthermore, WCET cannot be known if blocking method calls are used. We have applied these requirements to the design of three Java-based prototypes: a set of collection classes, a networking stack, and trigonometric functions. Our prototypes show that reusable libraries can meet these requirements and thus be viable for real-time systems.

Active diagnosis aims at significantly improving system reliability by computing diagnostic information at run-time for fault isolation and online error recovery. the presented work extends semantic techniques, usually used in large-scale IT systems, for active diagnosis in open embedded real time systems. Open embedded systems (e.g., ambient assisted living for elderly care, critical infrastructures, health management and medical systems) exhibit real-time and reliability requirements, while the constituent components are unknown at design time. time-triggered diagnostic inference supports the incremental generation of symptoms, which result from the temporal and spatial decomposition of the diagnostic analysis process. the methods and algorithms are prototypically implemented, as well as experimentally evaluated. the paper demonstrates that dynamic semantic web services in combination with time-triggered scheduling techniques are suitable to enable active diagnosis in open embedded systems with reliability and real-time requirements.

Service oriented architecture (SOA) is becoming established in computing as a means to integrate processing and data across organisations. this paper proposes that system-level integration can benefit from service oriented architectural descriptions and loose coupling between the problem domain requirements and different system solutions. the problem domain is exemplified as military capability, from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), in particular, network enabled capability (NEC). Representations of military capability in the problem domain can be described in terms of processes. the processes are sequences of functions that can be described as services. then different types of system solutions can implement the described services. Firstly, the paper presents an overview of conceptual SOA and in the context of military capability compares three levels of service integration: business services, systems services and computing services. Secondly, the paper presents a framework for evaluating the performance and effectiveness of service integration to compare different solutions in delivering military capability.
