In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. the architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. the sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks.

this paper presents the development of REF-WS an approach to enable a Web Service provider to reliably evolve their service through the application of refactoring transformations. REF-WS is intended to aid service providers, particularly in a reliability and performance constrained domain as it permits upgraded 'non-backwards compatible' services to be deployed into a performance constrained network where existing consumers depend on an older version of the service interface. In order for this to be successful, the refactoring and message mediation needs to occur without affecting functional compatibility with the services' consumers, and must operate within the performance overhead expected of the original service, introducing as little latency as possible. Furthermore, compared to a manually programmed solution, the presented approach enables the service developer to apply and parameterize refactorings with a level of confidence that they will not produce an invalid or 'corrupt' transformation of messages. this is achieved through the use of preconditions for the defined refactorings.

Computation, as expressed in modern programming languages, obscures many resource management problems. Memory is provided without bound by stacks and heaps. Power and energy consumption are not the concern of a programmer. Even when these resource management problems are important, there is no way to talk about them within the semantics of a programming language. time, however, is not quite like these other resources. First, barring metaphysical discourse, it is genuinely unbounded. To say that "the available time per unit time is bounded" is tautological, yet this is effectively what people say when they manage it as a bounded resource. Second, time gets expended whether we use it or not. It cannot be conserved and saved for later. this is true up to a point with, say, battery power. Batteries leak, so their power cannot be indefinitely conserved, but designers rarely optimize a system to use as much battery power before it leaks away as they can. Yet that is what they do with time.

Universal middleware bridge (UMB) provides seamless interoperation among heterogeneous home network middleware. there have been high demands for the UMB components (UMB core and adaptors) to have fault- tolerance capabilities. this paper presents a TMO structuring approach together with new implementation techniques for the fault-tolerant TMO-replica structuring scheme called PSTR. PSTR implementations of UMB components provide fault tolerance capabilities essential in realizing high reliability for the UMB facility.

this paper proposes a different approach for service adaptation which aims to: (i) support non-regular adaptation; (ii) integrate adaptation and model checking. First, a pushdown automaton is used to model the adaptor so that non-regular languages are possible. Second, behavior interfaces of services are modeled by Büchi automata in order to take the advantage of the acceptance condition. By defining the property of ”behavior mismatch free” in a LTL formula using acceptance condition, the detection of behavior mismatches is performed by model checking. Also, the adaptor generation is performed by model checking of pushdown systems with the guidance of a special over-behavioral adaptor called “coordinator”. then the returned counterexample is converted to a pushdown automaton, the expected adaptor.

this work is motivated by the needs to synchronize task executions where tasks might use semaphores to protect their critical sections and run over accelerators. In particular, the Priority Ceiling Protocol is extended to manage priority inversion caused by accelerator usages. By recognizing the difference between an accelerator and a semaphore, higher-priority tasks are less likely blocked by lower-priority tasks, due to their requests for an accelerator. In particular, blocking that will not contribute to any deadlock and/or chained blocking is allowed in a managed way, with an objective to maximize the utilization of accelerators. A series of experiments is then conducted to derive insights to task synchronization when accelerators might be used.

For the provision of dependable search and rescue capability in dynamic and unpredictable disaster areas, each networked node should have ability to (1) autonomously support and co-operate with each other in a peer-to-peer (P2P) manner to quickly discover and dependably self-configure services available on the disaster area to deliver a real-time capability; (2) modify their behaviours to deliver a sustainable capability according to environmental changes; (3) self-organise themselves to generate higher flexibility and adaptability for disaster management systems; and (4) share information and generate access throughout the network. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive and Efficient Peer-to-peer Search (AEPS) approach for dependable service integration on service-oriented architecture based on a number of social behaviour patterns. AEPS is capable to efficiently discover desirable services for disaster monitoring and relief by interacting with connected nodes and to support dependable dynamic service integration in real time through coping with rapid and significant changes in the disaster area. AEPS has no single point of failure, providing greater dependability in provision of capability even in the worst case of failure of service registry.

As the foundation of cloud computing, Server consolidation allows multiple computer infrastructures running as virtual machines in a single physical node. It improves the utilization of most kinds of resource but memory under x86 architecture. Because of inaccurate memory usage estimate and the lack of memory resource management, there is much service performance degradation in data centers, even though they have occupied a large amount of memory. Furthermore, memory becomes insufficient for a physical server when a lot of virtual machines depend on it. In order to improve this, we present a dynamic memory scheduling system called DMSS, which can manage memory resources in server consolidation environments and allocate memory among virtual machines on demand. We have designed and implemented the corresponding memory scheduling policy based on Xen virtualization platform to enhance memory efficiency and achieve service level agreement. the benchmark shows that DMSS can make an accurate and rapid response to memory changes and save more than 30% physical memory with less than 5% performance degradation. DMSS actually brings in economic benefits to cloud service providers because more virtual machines can be accommodated at lower costs. © 2012 ieee.

Power consumption, performance and reliability are the most important parameters in modern safety-critical distributed real-time embedded systems. this paper evaluates and compares different schedulability conditions in fault-tolerant Rate-Monotonic (RM) and Earliest-Deadline-First (EDF) algorithms, with respect to their power efficiency. the primary-backup scheme is used to implement fault tolerance in the algorithms. To evaluate the algorithms, a software tool is developed that can simulate an embedded system consisting of n processors and m periodic tasks. the results show that depending on the different schedulability conditions, the EDF algorithm implemented with the Best-Fit policy is on average 9.6% more power efficient than other algorithms when n=1500 and m=1000. between the two selected schedulability conditions in the RM algorithm, the Utilization oriented (UO) condition implemented with the Best-Fit policy is on average 5% more power efficient than the other schedulability condition.

In distributed real-time systems, when resource cannot meet workload demand, some jobs have to be removed from further execution. the decision as to which job to remove directly influences the system computation efficiency, i.e., the ratio between computation contributed to successful completions of real-time jobs and total computation contributed to the execution of jobs that may or may not be completed. the paper presents two job removal policies which aim at maximizing system's computation efficiency for distributed real-time applications where the applications' end-to-end deadlines must be guaranteed. Experiments based on benchmark applications generated by TGFF [1] are conducted and compared with recent work in the literature. the results show clear benefits of the developed approaches - they can achieve as much as 20% computation efficiency improvement.
