Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. these challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world. With the growing interest in interconnecting different sensor networks across a wide-area communication infrastructure, an overarching challenge becomes one of arriving at an agreed-upon global sensor network architecture that ensures interoperability. Unlike the Internet, where a layered communication stack (namely, the TCP/IP stack) defines the network architecture, a sensor network architecture must unify not only communication interfaces but also programming interfaces, sit-ice network communication and computation functions are tightly intertwined. In that sense, the sensor network architecture refers to a layered stack of distributed computing abstractions. this paper presents an architecture and key considerations in designing and interconnecting local and global sensor networks. Candidate protocols and middleware instantiations are described from the authors' ongoing work that meet the discussed considerations.

A software partitioning has been used to develop safety-critical systems in recent years. In addition, software component technologies supporting a software partitioning have been developed. this paper describes the new component technology for embedded software that requires memory protection, which is one of the important features for the partitioning. HR-TECS is a new component technology based on the real-time operating system supporting the static memory layout. Developers can easily allocate components to partitions in order to protect memory areas. In addition, HR-TECS supports inter-partition communications so that developers can implement components without consideration for inter-partition communications. the results of evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of HR-TECS.

Smart home environments require tight coupling between different types of sensors, actuators, and computer algorithms. To address the challenges in building a robust and effective smart home environment, it is essential to develop a systematic approach to handling a large number of components and their interactions. We describe a wholistic, multi-layered, and service oriented approach to smart home environment design that will enable abstractions needed for deploying system applications and analyzing individual modules. this paper presents our approach and modules, sensors, and actuators that are required for intelligent services in smart home environments.

In this work, we present the design and implementation of distributed visualization and collaboration for an immersive 3D visualizer in a component-oriented fashion. the design follows an MVC approach, isolating all the business objects in the lowest level of the application, making it modular and extensible, therefore providing an easier prototyping of functionality and the isolation of complex business logic algorithms. this design as a solution came from the necessity of an existing visualizer with a monolithic implementation, whose maintainability and improvement are impaired due to the coupling between the business logic and the diverse visualization and distribution algorithms. Our design may be reused as an inspiration for other visualizers that wish to reduce the complexity and cost of the development of new business functionality. We implemented the designed visualizer, where we verified both the synchronism of the distributed visualization and the consistency of the collaboration among multiple nodes. We also evaluated the performance impact caused by the distributed visualization.

the proper composition of independently developed components of an embedded real-time system is complicated due to the fact that besides the functional behavior also the non-functional properties and in particular the timing have to be compatible. A number of formal approaches have been developed, which try to guide the upfront decomposition of the embedded real-time system into components such that integration problems related to timing can be excluded. However, the proposed solutions come with severe limitations or require an analysis that does not scale such that these approaches are hardly applicable in practice. In this paper, we present an approach that ensures real-time compatibility by modeling the component behavior with timed automata and by only locally checking that the component is compatible concerning timing. the effort to establish the required guarantees for the integration scales as only local checks are employed. An AUTOSAR application example from the automotive domain is employed to demonstrate the applicability and scalability of the approach.

We consider the problem of recovering from failures of distributable threads in distributed real-time systems that operate tinder run-time uncertainties including those on thread execution times, thread arrivals, and node failure occurrences. When a thread encounters a node failure, it causes orphans. Under a termination model, the orphans must be detected and aborted, and exceptions must be delivered to farthest, contiguous surviving thread segment for resuming thread execution. Our application/scheduling model includes distributable threads and their exception handlers that are subject to time/utility function (TUF) time constraints and an utility accrual (UA) optimality criterion. A key underpinning of the TUF/UA scheduling paradigm is the notion of "best-effort" where high importance threads are always favored over low importance ones, irrespective of thread urgency. We present a scheduling algorithm called HUA and a thread integrity protocol called TPR. We show that HUA and TPR bound the orphan cleanup and recovery time with bounded loss of the best-effort property. Our implementation experience of HUA/TPR within Sun's distributed real-time Specification for Java demonstrates the algorithm/protocol's effectiveness.

Standards-based quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middletvare is increasingly being used as a platform,for developing distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that execute in open environments where operational conditions, input workload, and resource availability cannot be characterized accurately a priori. Although QoS-enabled component middleware offers many desirable features, until recently it lacked the ability to efficiently allocate resources and configure platform-specific QoS settings based on utilization of system resources and application QoS. Moreover, it has also lacked the ability to monitor and enforce application QoS requirements. this paper presents two contributions to research on adaptive resource management for component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the structure and functionality of the Resource Allocation and Control Engine (RACE), which is an open-source adaptive resource management framework built atop standards-based QoS-enabled component iniddleware. Second, we demonstrate the effectiveness of RACE in the context of a representative DREsystem: NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-scale Mission system.

real-time databases are different from conventional databases in that they have timing constraints on data and on transactions upon the data. the timing constraints of data require that the current status of the real world must be close enough to the state represented by the contents of the database. the timing constraints of transactions are typically expressed in the form of deadline which indicates a certain time in the future by which a transaction must be completed. Conventional data models can not be directly applied to describe the conceptual data model of a real-time database, since there is no mechanism to deal with the representation of timing constraints. A real-time data model should simultaneously satisfy many goals. It should clearly and concisely provide support for specifying timing constraints on data and transactions, semantics of real-time data and real-time transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies to meet the timing constraints defined by the real-time applications. this paper presents a real-time object-oriented data model and its use in designing real-time extensions to the DB4O database management system. this data model supports expression of time-constrained data, time-constrained transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies. It also can be integrated easily in existing object-oriented method and permits automatic code generation of all the real-time code of an application.

the paper proposes an approach to solve the situation. In our approach, we have developed a middleware component to connect several middleware implementing these object-oriented standard specifications for home computing. Actually, our middleware component makes it possible to connect home appliances adopting HAVi, Jini, or UPnP. therefore, various home appliances can communicate with each other.

Modern real-time applications are very dynamic and cannot cope with the use of worst case execution time to avoid overload situations. therefore scheduling algorithms that are able to prevent timing faults during overload are required. In this context, the value parameter has become useful to add generality and flexibility to such systems. In this paper we present the scheduling algorithm called DMB (Dynamic Misses Based), which is capable of dynamically changing tasks value in order to adjust their importance according to its timing faults rate. the main goal of DMB is to allow the prediction of timing faults during overloads and thereby support a dynamic tuning of tasks fault rate. It is used to enhance the features of the previously defined TAFT (time-Aware Fault-Tolerant) scheduler Obtained results show that DMB in conjunction with TAFT reached the most promising results during overloads, allowing to control tasks degradation in a graceful and determined way.
