To cope with the increasing design complexity of modern embedded real-time systems, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques are being proposed and applied within the domain of embedded and real-time systems. this paper discusses a design approach that combines MDE and concepts of the Aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) to deal with functional and non-functional requirements in a modularized way using higher abstraction levels. this approach covers activities from requirements engineering to the implementation phases, allowing early verification and simulation of system specifications. the proposed MDE approach is supported by a set of CASE tools. A configurable tool for code generation is capable of creating source code for different target platforms from the models produced in earlier design phases. Besides generating code for functional requirements handling, the tool also weaves aspects' adaptations, which modify the generated code to handle non-functional requirements. Furthermore, a tool to execute automatically a set of test cases is used to simulate and exercise the system behavior already in the specification and modeling phase. this tools allows engineers to verify if the system model is being specified according to the requirements, identifying whether the functional requirements are being fulfilled. the proposed approach has been successfully applied to the development of embedded real-time systems for different real-world applications. Obtained results show an improvement concerning the modularization of system's requirements handling, leading to an increased reuse of previously created artifacts.

Autonomous adaptation in self-adapting embedded real-time systems introduces novel risks as it may lead to unforeseen system behavior. An anomaly detection framework integrated in a real-time operating system can ease the identification of such suspicious novel behavior and, thereby, offers the potential to enhance the reliability of the considered self-x system. However, anomaly detection is based on knowledge about normal behavior. When dealing with self-reconfiguring applications, normal behavior changes so that the knowledge base requires adaptation or even (re-)construction at runtime. the stringent restrictions of real-time systems in terms of runtime and memory consumption assign this task to be a really challenging problem. In this paper, we present our idea for online construction of application behavior knowledge that does not rely on any training phase. the applications' behavior is defined by the application's system call invocations. For the knowledge base, we exploit Suffix Trees as they offer potentials to represent application behavior patterns and their associated information in a compact manner. We apply the online algorithm provided by Suffix Trees as a basis to construct the knowledge base with low computational effort. However, we integrate anomaly detection and classification into the online construction method. We ensure thereby that new behavioral patterns do not unconditionally update the behavior knowledge base, but beforehand, have been evaluated in a context-related manner inspired by Danger theory, a special discipline of Artificial Immune Systems.

the complexity of software in safety critical systems has increased significantly over the last ten years so that how to tackle the complexity and gain high dependable software plays an important roles in ensuring the overall product quality. In this context, component based development (CBD) has been successfully applied to large scale software system in the fields of Software Engineering. Similarly, System Safety Analysis (SSA) has also gained wide used in critical systems in the fields of System Safety Engineering. But they often used their methodology in isolation. Furthermore, shortage of unified formal framework to bridge the gap between the CBD and SSA make it hard to integrate them into a unified rigorous development process for safety critical systems. this paper describes a new approach called component Fault Tree and Fault Tolerant pattern guided Fault Tolerant Software Architecture (CFT3SA), which bridge the gap between CBD and SSA to realize the seamless integration of CBD and SSA. Furthermore, the formal definitions of component Fault Tree, Fault tolerant Pattern underpin the systematical verification and validation of fault tolerant systems. A case study from the Odemetry Safe System in the train control domain has been used to valuate the feasibility of the proposed fault tolerant software architectural solution.

Many research works have focused on developing multimedia applications such as video conferencing and video-on-demand (VoD). From this trend, we see that the VoD service will become the main issue in future. However, service providers don't efficiently provide VoD services for a great number of clients yet. One of the reasons is the high cost in providing VoD services. Because a multimedia service consumes wide bandwidth in spite of great advances of video compression, network bandwidth resource must significantly be spent to maintain multiple clients concurrently. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new transmission method using the broadcast, named as a poly harmonic staggered broadcasting (PHSB) method. the proposed method is an efficient transmission method that has a simple structure of the staggered broadcasting method and substantially improved bandwidth efficiency of the poly harmonic broadcasting method. the numerical results show that the viewer's waiting time of the PHSB method is close to the waiting time of the harmonic broadcasting method which theoretically has the best bandwidth efficiency. Furthermore, the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted by adjusting the short front part of a video size.

As the foundation of cloud computing, Server consolidation allows multiple computer infrastructures running as virtual machines in a single physical node. It improves the utilization of most kinds of resource but memory under x86 architecture. Because of inaccurate memory usage estimate and the lack of memory resource management, there is much service performance degradation in data centers, even though they have occupied a large amount of memory. Furthermore, memory becomes insufficient for a physical server when a lot of virtual machines depend on it. In order to improve this, we present a dynamic memory scheduling system called DMSS, which can manage memory resources in server consolidation environments and allocate memory among virtual machines on demand. We have designed and implemented the corresponding memory scheduling policy based on Xen virtualization platform to enhance memory efficiency and achieve service level agreement. the benchmark shows that DMSS can make an accurate and rapid response to memory changes and save more than 30% physical memory with less than 5% performance degradation. DMSS actually brings in economic benefits to cloud service providers because more virtual machines can be accommodated at lower costs.

One cannot image today's life without mechatronic systems, which have to be developed in a joint effort by teams of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, control engineers and software engineers. Often these systems are applied in safety critical environments like in cars or aircrafts. this requires systems that function correctly and do not cause hazardous situations. However, random errors due to wear or external influences cannot be completely excluded. Consequently, we have to perform a hazard analysis for the system. Further, the union of four disciplines in one system requires the development and analysis of the system as a whole. We present a component-based hazard analysis that considers the entire mechatronic system including hardware, i.e. mechanical and electrical components, and software components. Our approach considers the physical properties of different types of flow in mechatronic systems. We have identified reusable patterns for the failure behavior which can be generated automatically. this reduces the effort for the developer. As cycles, e.g. control cycles, are an internal part of every mechatronic system our approach is able to handle cycles. the presented approach has been applied to a real-life case study.

Robot technologies, such as robot technology middleware (RTM) that is a component-oriented platform, are popular. However, RTM does not ensure stable real-time processing in common object request broker architecture. In this paper, a collaboration framework of RTM and TOPPERS embedded component system (TECS) is proposed to address this problem. TECS, a system that satisfies real-time processing requirements, is employed to enhance real-time processing in the proposed framework. To implement the collaboration of RTM and TECS, we have adopted remote procedure call and one-way communication. In addition, extending a generator enables the generation of robot technology components from TECS components. We have evaluated the processor cycle counts of the proposed framework in comparison with those of a conventional method. In addition, we evaluated the execution time of serial communication and a motor application using the proposed framework. the evaluation results show that the proposed framework is functionally employed in a hard real-time system. Furthermore, we evaluated the amount of code generated by the proposed framework. the evaluation results reveal that the code generated by the proposed framework is reusable and can enhance productivity.

component-based programming models are well-suited to the design of large-scale, distributed applications because of the ease with which distributed functionality can be developed, deployed, and validated using the models' compositional properties. Existing component models supported by standardized technologies, such as the OMG's CORBA component Model (CCM), however, incur a number of limitations in the context of cyber physical systems (CPS) that operate in highly dynamic, resource-constrained, and uncertain environments, such as space environments, yet require multiple quality of service (QoS) assurances, such as timeliness, reliability, and security. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the design of a novel component model called F6COM that is developed for applications operating in the context of a cluster of fractionated spacecraft. Although F6COM leverages the compositional capabilities and port abstractions of existing component models, it provides several new features. Specifically, F6COM abstracts the component operations as tasks, which are scheduled sequentially based on a specified scheduling policy. the infrastructure ensures that at any time at most one task of a component can be active - eliminating race conditions and deadlocks without requiring complicated and error-prone synchronization logic to be written by the component developer. these tasks can be initiated due to (a) interactions with other components, (b) expiration of timers, both sporadic and periodic, and (c) interactions with input/output devices. Interactions with other components are facilitated by ports. To ensure secure information flows, every port of an F6COM component is associated with a security label such that all interactions are executed within a security context. thus, all component interactions can be subjected to Mandatory Access Control checks by a Trusted computing Base that facilitates the interactions. Network-based real-time computing applications which require tightly bounded end-to-end delays have been increasing at a steady rate in recent years. A messaging layer that yields tight bounds on the latencies in detecting message losses and enables the application layer to initiate a timely recovery action has thus become highly desirable. In this paper we present a new reliable real-time messaging scheme called the Delay-Bounded Reliable Messaging Scheme (DB-RMS) that is aimed at meeting such requirements. It is built on top of the UDP sub-layer. DB-RMS provides multiple service options, each with different fault detection/recovery capabilities and different costs in terms of the execution overhead. this feature makes DB-RMS suitable for a variety of applications. the service options and the corresponding support protocols are presented first, followed by a formal analysis on the detection and reaction latency bounds under various service options. A messaging layer prototype using DB-RMS has been implemented. Performance measurements of the prototype implementation have been taken and the positive results obtained are also presented.
