Increasing capabilities of modern microcontrollers greatly increase their applicability to more and more complex scenarios. However, unstable and ever-changing environmental settings require embedded systems permanently to adapt to new situations. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism to execute such adaptation strategies. the implementation of dynamic reconfiguration is still challenging for embedded real-time control software. Within earlier work we have presented our framework *** for runtime adaption of component-based applications, including a runtime infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration and monitoring, targeted for mobile and desktop environments. New experiments in our Web-based remote laboratory - the distributed control lab - require the reconfiguration to complete in bounded time. In the remote lab we use dynamic reconfiguration to adapt experiment control to failures in user control components. Within this paper, we analyze the timing behavior of the implemented dynamic reconfiguration algorithm in order to allow for predictable execution times. We describe how complex component-based real-time applications can be adapted to changing environmental conditions, continuously meeting all tasks deadlines during dynamic reconfiguration.

Formal validation of the design and properties of distributed software entities for Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) is challenging due to the non-linear sequence of operations and multiple possible inter-leavings of events and processes. Current model-checking tools are more suited to represent independent systems or pieces of code that are self-contained and rarely consider interactions between different participants of a composite distributed software application. this paper introduces an automated model generation tool for distributed CPS software applications written in a software framework called RIAPS. the tool combines the application model, edge deployment architecture, and individual component level source code annotated with user-supplied timing parameters to produce a network of timed Automata models compatible with the popular model checker UPPAAL. the generated model can then be verified using UPPAAL’s formal verification engine. the article uses a simple distributed application example CPS to demonstrate how the tool can be used to verify and compare the design and timing of different deployment configurations.

Parallel And distributed Simulations (PADS) become more and more spread since scientists always want more accurate results in the shortest time. PADS are often sensitive to several parameters, and when they own a stochastic component, one has to ensure he knows how to correctly deal with randomness in a parallel application. this point can appear to be very tricky for non-experts, who might be tempted to move this part of the simulation aside. Several software efforts have been produced in various programming languages to help developers handle pseudorandom streams partitioning in PADS. However, these tools remain third-party libraries that need to be integrated in already existing applications, and that might be hardly swappable. the latest release of the Java Development Kit (JDK 7) tries to tackle this problem with a new class called threadLocalRandom. the latter is in charge of safe pseudorandom number generation across Java threads. the present work studies the pros and cons of this approach, and introduces threadLocalMRG32k3a, an alternative to threadLocalRandom that shows better results in terms of generation speed and statistical quality. threadLocalMRG32k3a respects the same Application Programming Interface (API) as threadLocalRandom, thus enabling clients to use it in place of its JDK counterpart at no cost. © 2012 ieee.

the interoperability of Web services has resulted in its adoption for recently-emerging cloud platforms. SOAP (Simple object Access Protocol) is considered as the main platform independent communication tool for the Cloud Web service. Generally, Cloud Web services suffer performance bottlenecks and congestions that are mainly caused by the encoding of XML messages as they are bigger than the real payloads. In this paper, Fractal clustering model is proposed to compute the Fractal clustering similarity of SOAP messages in order to cluster them and enable the aggregation of SOAP messages to significantly reduce the size of the aggregated SOAP messages. Furthermore, as Fractal is a well-known as a time-consuming technique especially for large dataset, two fast Fractal clustering models have been proposed that are aiming to reduce the required clustering time. the proposed fast Fractal models have tremendously outperformed the classical Fractal model in terms of the processing time and have outperformed both K-means and PCA combined with K-means models in terms of both the processing time and SOAP messages size reduction.

Besides the complexity of grid application programming, achieving high performance has become a real challenge in large scale grid systems mainly because of the high latencies and unpredictable communication paths. We follow the idea of shared data programming in grid environments and we design a replication component for a shared data programming framework with dynamic replication capabilities. We define several replication policies that are dynamically used during the application life-cycle in order to minimize the communication cost and provide better performance. We evaluate several application scenarios in order to prove that dynamic policy based replication can improve the overall application performance and reduce resource access time.

As embedded systems grow in complexity and scale due to increased functional diversity, component-based development (CBD) emerges as a solution to streamline their architecture and enhance functionality reuse. CBD typically utilizes the C programming language for its direct hardware access and low-level operations, despite its susceptibility to memory-related issues. To address these concerns, this paper proposes TOPPERS Embedded component Systems/Rust (TECS/Rust), a Rust-based framework specifically designed for TECS, which is a component framework for embedded systems. It leverages Rust’s compile-time memory-safe features, such as lifetime and borrowing, to mitigate memory vulnerabilities common with C. the proposed framework not only ensures memory safety but also maintains the flexibility of CBD, automates Rust code generation for CBD components, and supports efficient integration with real-time operating systems. An evaluation of the amount of generated code indicates that the code generated by this paper framework accounts for a large percentage of the actual code. Compared to code developed without the proposed framework, the difference in execution time is minimal, indicating that the overhead introduced by the proposed framework is negligible.

We present a tool-supported approach to the validation of system-level timing properties in formal models of distributed real-time embedded systems. Our aim is to provide system architects with rapid feedback on the timing characteristics of alternative designs in the often volatile early stages of the development cycle. the approach extends the Vienna development method (VDM++), a formal object-oriented modeling language with facilities for describing real-time applications deployed over a distributed infrastructure. A new facility is proposed for stating and checking validation conjectures (assertions concerning real-time properties) against traces derived from the execution of scenarios on VDM++ models. We define validation conjectures and outline their semantics. We describe the checking of conjectures against execution traces as a formally-defined extension of the existing VDM++ tool set, and show tools to visualise traces and validation conjecture violations. the approach and tool support are illustrated with a case study based on an in-car radio navigation system.

Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) middleware is now widely used to develop distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. DRE systems are themselves increasingly combined to form "systems of systems" that have diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements. Earlier generations of COTS middleware, such as object Request Brokers (ORBs) based on the CORBA 2.x standard, do not facilitate the separation of QoS policies from application functionality, which makes it hard to configure and validate complex DRE applications. the new generation of component middleware, such as the CORBA component model (CCM) based on the CORBA 3.0 standard, addresses the limitations of earlier generation middleware by establishing standards for implementing, packaging, assembling, and deploying component implementations. there has been little systematic empirical study of the performance characteristics of component middleware implementations in the context of DRE systems. this paper therefore provides three contributions to the study of CCM for DRE systems. First, we describe the challenges involved in benchmarking different CORBA component model (CCM) implementations. Second, we describe key criteria for comparing different CCM implementations using key black-box and white-box metrics. third, we describe the design of our CCMPerf benchmarking suite to illustrate test categories that evaluate aspects of CCM implementation to determine their suitability for the DRE domain. We demonstrate CCMPerf by using it to collect metrics from a CCM implementation designed for DRE applications.

A critical issue for complex component-based systems design is the modeling and analysis of architecture. Architectural specifications of software systems show them as a collection of interrelated components, and constitute what has been called the software architecture level of software design. It is at this level where the description and verification of structural properties of the system are naturally addressed. Besides, the use of explicit descriptions of the architecture of software systems enhances system comprehension and promotes software reuse. We have developed a tool-the Web-Based Software Architecture Prototyping System (SAPS)-in a distributed environment to meet the requirements of integrating software components into heterogeneous networks. Our system architecture design environment includes a Web-based Software Architecture Editor, the Java Code Generator (JCG), a Reusable Assets Repository (RAR), and a Platform Distribution Controller (PDC). By using the wrapper/glue technique, different simulation tools in a heterogeneous environment share the input/output data files for prototypes. the architecture is generalized for the communication among software components necessary for data interchange. Our system not only provides a useful array of tools for distributed real-time system prototyping, but also is a demonstration of the effective use of a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment.
