this paper compares interaction and communication mechanisms used in distributed control systems, focusing on object-oriented and component-based development. the standard communication model used in distributed object-oriented systems is the remote method invocation. We argue that this client/server oriented model has some severe drawbacks when used in a control system where objects may have to broadcast information, spontaneously communicate environmental changes and where control autonomy is a crucial requirement. therefore, we compare the traditional way of object invocation with a port-based scheme and the model of event channels. An application scenario from. robot control is used to highlight similarities and differences among these mechanisms.

In self-adapting embedded real-time systems, operating systems and software provide mechanisms to self-adapt to changing requirements. Autonomous adaptation decisions introduce novel risks as they may lead to unforeseen system behavior that could not have been specified within a design-time model. However, as part of its functionality the operating system has to ensure the reliability of the entire self-x system during run-time. In this paper, we present our work in progress for an operating system framework which aims to identify anomalous or malicious system states at run-time without a sophisticated specification-time model. Inspired by the Artificial Immune Systems Danger theory, we propose an anomaly detection mechanism that operates not only on the local system behavior information of the monitored component. Furthermore, to ensure an efficient behavior evaluation, the anomaly detection mechanism implies system-wide input signals that indicate e.g the existence of a potential danger within the overall system or the occurrence of a system adaption. Due to the ability of this framework to cope with dynamically changing behavior and to identify unintended behavioral deviations, it seems to be a promising approach to enhance the run-time dependability of a self-x system.

Software instrumentation is an important aspect of software-intensive distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems because it enables real-time feedback of system properties, such as resource usage and component state, for performance analysis. Although it is critical not to collect too much instrumentation data to ensure minimal impact on the DRE system's existing performance properties, the design and implementation of software instrumentation middleware can impact how much instrumentation data can be collected. this can indirectly impact the DRE system's existing properties and performance analysis, and is more of a concern when using general-purpose software instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. this paper provides two contributions to instrumenting software-intensive DRE systems. First, it presents two techniques named the Standard Flat-rate Envelope and Pay-per-use for improving the performance of software instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. Secondly, it quantitatively evaluates performance gains realized by the two techniques in the context the Open-source Architecture for Software Instrumentation of Systems (OASIS), which is open-source dynamic instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. Our results show that the Standard Flat-rate Envelope improves performance up to 57% and the Pay-per-use improves performance up to 49%.

In a real-time distributed computing environment, security is critical to protect the system from unauthorized access especially since such systems are being used in time critical applications. Access Control mechanisms have been introduced during the last several decades and have offered a basic and powerful means for enforcing security. In this paper, we examine the concepts of the TMO (time Triggered Message Triggered object) scheme that provides guaranteed real-time services in a distributed object computing environment. We also examine access control mechanisms;such as the traditional model, the RBAC (Role-based Access Control) model and the UCON (Usage Control) model. the main contribution of this paper is applying the traditional, RBAC and UCON models to the TMO scheme in order to provide a secure real-time distributed environment.

To cope with the increasing design complexity of modern embedded real-time systems, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques are being proposed and applied within the domain of embedded and real-time systems. this paper discusses a design approach that combines MDE and concepts of the Aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) to deal with functional and non-functional requirements in a modularized way using higher abstraction levels. this approach covers activities from requirements engineering to the implementation phases, allowing early verification and simulation of system specifications. the proposed MDE approach is supported by a set of CASE tools. A configurable tool for code generation is capable of creating source code for different target platforms from the models produced in earlier design phases. Besides generating code for functional requirements handling, the tool also weaves aspects' adaptations, which modify the generated code to handle non-functional requirements. Furthermore, a tool to execute automatically a set of test cases is used to simulate and exercise the system behavior already in the specification and modeling phase. this tools allows engineers to verify if the system model is being specified according to the requirements, identifying whether the functional requirements are being fulfilled. the proposed approach has been successfully applied to the development of embedded real-time systems for different real-world applications. Obtained results show an improvement concerning the modularization of system's requirements handling, leading to an increased reuse of previously created artifacts.

object-oriented programming languages are extensively used in real-time systems. When calculating the worst case execution time for object-oriented programs one needs flow information, such as loop bounds and information on infeasible paths. In most cases, the programmer is expected to supply these as manual annotations. this paper presents a prototype tool which calculates this information automatically for realtimeTalk (RTT) programs. RTT is a real-time version of the object-oriented language Smalltalk. We also show the analysis of a number of example programs.

the stringent performance requirements of distributed real-time embedded systems often require highly optimized implementations of middleware services. Performing such optimizations manually can be tedious and error-prone. this paper proposes a model-driven approach to generate customized implementations of event ordering services in the context of component based systems. Our approach is accompanied by a number of tools to automate the customization. Given an application App, an event ordering service Order and a middleware platform P, we provide tools to analyze high-level specifications of App to extract information relevant to event ordering and to use the extracted application information to obtain a customized service, Order(App), with respect to the application usage.

EarlGray is a component-based Java virtual machine (JVM) that can be configured to satisfy various kinds of requirements for building future information appliances and embedded systems. While the modification and extension on an existing JVM tend to be done in an ad-hoe manner, EarlGray allows developers to customize the JVM in a systematic manner by decomposing it into components and the explicit descriptions of the relationship between the components. We also examine three case studies on the customization of the EarlGray: exchanging a scheduler, memory management, and class file verifier components. these case studies shows the benefits and drawbacks of the current component-based technologies.

Middleware designed for use in distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) systems enable cost and development time reductions by providing simple communications abstractions and hiding operating system-level networking API details from developers. While current middleware technologies can hide many low-level details, designers must provide a static configuration for the system's underlying network in order to achieve required performance characteristics. this has not been a problem for many types of DRE systems where the configuration of the system is relatively fixed from the factory (e.g., aircraft or naval vessels). However for truly open systems (i.e., systems where end users can add or substract components at runtime) the standard static network configuration approach cannot guarantee that required performance will be met because network resource demands are not fully known a priori. Open systems with stringent performance requirements need middleware that can dynamically manage the underlying network configuration automatically in response to changing demands. Fortunately, recent trends in networking have resulted in a wide variety of networking equipment that expose a standardized low-level interface to their configuration via the OpenFlow protocol. In this paper we discuss how OpenFlow can be leveraged by DRE middleware to automatically provide performance guarantees. In order to make the discussion concrete, we describe the architecture of our prototype middleware MIDAS as well as the details of one example network resource management strategy. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach via performance assesment of a simple DRE application using our MIDAS and commerically available OpenFlow hardware.

Autonomous adaptation in self-adapting embedded real-time systems introduces novel risks as it may lead to unforeseen system behavior. An anomaly detection framework integrated in a real-time operating system can ease the identification of such suspicious novel behavior and, thereby, offers the potential to enhance the reliability of the considered self-x system. However, anomaly detection is based on knowledge about normal behavior. When dealing with self-reconfiguring applications, normal behavior changes so that the knowledge base requires adaptation or even (re-)construction at runtime. the stringent restrictions of real-time systems in terms of runtime and memory consumption assign this task to be a really challenging problem. In this paper, we present our idea for online construction of application behavior knowledge that does not rely on any training phase. the applications' behavior is defined by the application's system call invocations. For the knowledge base, we exploit Suffix Trees as they offer potentials to represent application behavior patterns and their associated information in a compact manner. We apply the online algorithm provided by Suffix Trees as a basis to construct the knowledge base with low computational effort. However, we integrate anomaly detection and classification into the online construction method. We ensure thereby that new behavioral patterns do not unconditionally update the behavior knowledge base, but beforehand, have been evaluated in a context-related manner inspired by Danger theory, a special discipline of Artificial Immune Systems.
