the recently adopted UML Profile for Scheduling, Performance and time, has the potential to standardize terminology and practice within the real-time UML community, but its scope is still very limited;particularly its use in characterizing infrastructures, such as middle-ware and operating systems. this paper shows how the profile might be used to model the OSEK operating system standard,both in order to validate the profile's core concepts and to expand the set of artifacts described using the profile.

A key challenge in keeping distributed clocks well synchronized in a LAN environment via OS- or middleware-level mechanisms is to create an interference-free condition in a network channel(s) and a nonpreemptible on-alert condition in the responsible thread in each node during each resynchronization round while keeping the length of each round as short as possible. An approach for meeting this challenge which is based on the middleware architecture TMOSM, has been presented. A prototype implementation and its measurements indicated that with a typical network of PCs connected via a 10 Mbps Ethernet, the PC nodes can be kept synchronized within the deviation bound of 0.5 milliseconds. the organizing principle is believed to be applicable to many real-time OSs or middleware used to support distributed computing applications.

Traditionally, real-time requirements are expressed by means of deadlines, which are imposed by the environment on the system. this approach, however, is not well suited for expressing real-time requirements on the interaction between objects;such as found in distributed systems supporting autonomy of objects. this paper presents a coherent framework in which real-time requirements for such interacting objects can be expressed Two interrelated system layers are considered together: the communication layer and the distributed programming layer that describes how interactions between the objects are organized In particular, the paper evaluates the relationship between real-time requirements and real-time activities in distributed object-oriented systems.

the TMO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) model is a well-known real-time object model for distributed timeliness computing. In a couple of years ago, we developed a Linux-based real-time kernel, named TMO-Linux, supporting deadline driven executions of TMO. TMO-Linux and its distributed IPC subsystem have been used well in developing networked control systems consisting of cooperating embedded devices, but there have difficulties in executing some TMO applications accurately due to the lack of timeliness in distributed communications. To overcome this problem, we newly developed a real-time distributed IPC over ieee1394 for the TMO-Linux kernel. In the new system, predictable delivery services for real-time messages are provided by isochronous transmissions of ieee1394. To implement predictable delivery services, each node is set to have its own isochronous channel for receiving data that is allocated to a fixed time-slot bandwidth in an ieee1394 flame. this paper presents an implementation technique for the ieee]394-based real-time distributed IPC and collaborations of computing nodes using TMO-Linux.

Almost a year ago, Microsoft has introduced the .NET architecture as a new component-based programming environment, which allows for easy integration of classical distributed programming techniques with Web computing. NET defines a type system and introduces notions such as component, object, and interface, which are building blocks for distributed multi-language component-based applications. As many other component frameworks, NET mainly focuses on functional interfaces of components. Nonfunctional aspects of components, such as resource usage (CPU, memory), timing behavior, fault-tolerance, or security requirements are currently not expressed in NET's component interfaces. Within this paper, we discuss the usage of aspect-oriented programming techniques in context of the NET framework. We focus on the fault-tolerance aspect and discuss the expression of non-functional component properties (aspects) as C# custom attributes. Our approach uses reflection to generate replicated objects based on settings of a special "fault-tolerance" attribute for C# components(perpendicular to). We have implemented an aspect-weaver for integration of aspect-code and component-code, which uses the mechanisms of the language-neutral NET type system. therefore, our approach is not restricted to the C# language but works for an), of the NET programming languages.

the scheduling paradigm offers an alternative execution model for services and applications, which is of particular interest for the enterprise domain. therefore, task scheduling is considered as an integral part of many contemporary information systems and service platforms. In this paper we present, the architectural aspects of an integrated scheduling framework, targeted to the mobile applications market along with an implementation prototype, which was also developed with the purpose of demonstrating its capabilities and identifying its limitations.

the component/container paradigm helps to reduce the complexity and enhance the scalability of software development for plain desktop or enterprise systems. However the frameworks enabling this approach are often not suitable for systems with limited processing power and memory sizes, and are not dedicated to real-time requirements. As part of the European IST project COMPARE, we study a possible projection from a high-level component model (CORBA component Model) towards a low-level RT/E platform (OSEK). Preliminary results from this study are accounted in this paper In the first part, the main features of CCM and OSEK are examined. then we propose execution and communication models using an API for OSEK that is as similar as possible to that in the CCM framework.

component-based programming models are well-suited to the design of large-scale, distributed applications because of the ease with which distributed functionality can be developed, deployed, and validated using the models' compositional properties. Existing component models supported by standardized technologies, such as the OMG's CORBA component Model (CCM), however, incur a number of limitations in the context of cyber physical systems (CPS) that operate in highly dynamic, resource-constrained, and uncertain environments, such as space environments, yet require multiple quality of service (QoS) assurances, such as timeliness, reliability, and security. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the design of a novel component model called F6COM that is developed for applications operating in the context of a cluster of fractionated spacecraft. Although F6COM leverages the compositional capabilities and port abstractions of existing component models, it provides several new features. Specifically, F6COM abstracts the component operations as tasks, which are scheduled sequentially based on a specified scheduling policy. the infrastructure ensures that at any time at most one task of a component can be active -eliminating race conditions and deadlocks without requiring complicated and error-prone synchronization logic to be written by the component developer. these tasks can be initiated due to (a) interactions with other components, (b) expiration of timers, both sporadic and periodic, and (c) interactions with input/output devices. Interactions with other components are facilitated by ports. To ensure secure information flows, every port of an F6COM component is associated with a security label such that all interactions are executed within a security context. thus, all component interactions can be subjected to Mandatory Access Control checks by a Trusted computing Base that facilitates the interactions. real-time (RT) applications are designed to control systems that are inherently parallel. For easing development, abstractions are mandatory to model this concurrency. To achieve this goal, the real-time object paradigm is proposed. It is used to demonstrate how to separate functional and concurrency concerns ensuring also high-level abstraction for parallelism modeling.
