Although high-level real-time distributed computing objects are generally written in forms independent of execution platforms, input and output (I/O) activities involving peripherals are inherently platform-dependent. Yet, writing parts of real-time objects for controlling peripherals should be done in forms compatible with the adopted real-time object programming styles. Basic issues are discussed in the context of an object-oriented real-time programming scheme called the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme. A desirable goal here is to facilitate both commanding and reactive control of peripherals in TMOs in general forms while enabling relatively easy analysis of the timing behavior of such TMOs. this paper presents several techniques to meet these requirements.

Embedded real-time applications are often built from scratch on a trial-and-error basis, which leads to sub-optimal designs with latent errors that are not detectable in early stages of use or deployment and often incurs prolonged time-to-market. A new application framework, called Verifiable Embedded real-time Application Framework (VERTAF) is proposed for embedded real-time application development, with the aim of reducing design errors and increasing design productivity VERTAF is an integration of three technologies, namely object-oriented technology, software component technology, and formal verification technology. VERTAF consists of five software components: Implanter, Modeler, Scheduler, Verifier, and Generator. Experiences of using VERTAF show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse, and a significant decrease in design time and effort through design verification. An example shows a relatively low design effort on the part of the designer using VERTAF.

this paper describes a replication algorithm for distributed real-time object-oriented databases in a static environment. All data requirements are specified a priori, and the algorithm creates replication transactions that copy remote data to a local site in order to guarantee that every data request reads temporally valid data. the algorithm conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for providing this guarantee. Test results indicate that under most conditions, this replication strategy is better than total replication, which is a typical strategy used in distributed databases.

the real-time CORBA and minimumCORBA specifications are important steps towards defining standard-based middleware which can satisfy real-time requirements in an embedded system. these real-time middlewares must be based on a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a real-time network. this article presents a new time-triggered ethernet protocol that has been implemented under RTLinux. Furthermore it describes a real-time CORBA implementation called ROFES, which is based on this new real-time network.

Modular component-based robot systems require not only an infrastructure for component management, but also scalability as well as real-time properties. Robot Technology (RT)-Middleware is a software platform for such component-based robot systems. Each component in the RT-Middleware, so-called "RT-component" supporting particular robot functions, is based on Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). Unfortunately, the RT-Middleware lacks the mechanism for real-time control. In this paper, we extend the framework of the RT-components to take care of timing constraints. We first enable tasks to have different periods within each RT-component. We then modify the packet format of the General Inter-ORB Protocol (GIOP) to transfer the information of timing constraints over RT-components. the performance evaluation on ART-Linux shows that the extended RT-component framework improves the schedulability of distributed real-time tasks, without causing critical overheads in unmarshaling the modified GIOP packets.

In this paper, we describe a XML based profile for modeling the semantics of real time systems. We aim to use real time Markup Language (RTML) to provide a comprehensive description of temporal properties for the use in distributed systems communication. RTML is derived from a number of specifications including OMG UML Profile in Schedulability, Performance, and time. In this paper, we discuss the technique that was used to develop RTML semantic model and the important concepts in RTML.

there is a general trend in designing distributed control systems to give an increasing amount of autonomy to the individual nodes of such systems. Autonomous nodes interact only loosely. But also, close cooperation tinder hard real-time constraints is required in certain situations. this paper analyzes approaches for structuring distributed control systems and presents an architecture integrating object-oriented frameworks, publisher/subscriber communication, and hard- and soft-real-time communication. For supporting mobile robots, wireless communication is considered in particular.

Software metrics can be used to objectively quantify the quality of software components and systems, alleviating quality and risk concerns and raising assurance in component-based systems. In this paper we present a graph-based model for component-based software development. We assume that a number of components have been characterized in terms of non-functional metrics of importance to the software system being developed, and that the interfaces connecting various components have been similarly characterized. the emphasis of this work is on cost and quality of the system under development, and reaching an acceptable compromise between the two.

In the upstream phase of object-oriented development, we usually model a target system from multiple points of view. A dataflow view has been recognized as one of the most important views in software engineering. We need to relate dataflow models to OO models and check consistency between them as it is still important even if we adopt object-oriented approach. In this paper, we propose a method to analyze dataflows in OO design models with the model checker Spin after formalizing them.
