Hybrid analog-digital beamforming has been shown to reduce hardware cost and power consumption in massive MIMO systems, at the expense of increased radiated power for given performance targets. To alleviate the above shortfall, in this paper we exploit the concept of constructive interference (CI) that has been shown to offer significant radiated power savings in fully-digital multi-user downlink MIMO systems. We explore analog beamforming design, and develop solutions specifically tailored for CI-based hybrid beamforming. We also evaluate the performance of the presented techniques and their computational complexities using simulation results.

Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation for multiple simultaneously active acoustic sources without knowledge of the number of sources and the noise level remains a challenging task. A method of source counting for DOA estimation using density-based clustering is proposed. Multiple Density-based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) with varying noise sensitivity is applied in an evolutionary procedure to obtain weighted centroids. An autonomous DB-SCAN is finally run on the weighted centroids to extract the final DOA estimates. the results using generated and estimated DOAs show that the proposed technique significantly outperforms the conventional histogram peak picking as well as the original DBSCAN and variations of Kmeans with ≤4° DOA estimation accuracy and improves the source counting.

this paper considers terahertz (thz) imaging of multi-layer nonoverlapping contents with compressed measurements. One issue here is the shadow effect from front layers to deep layers due to the non-uniform penetrating illumination. In the case of nonoverlapping contents in layered structures, the shadow effect can be utilized to improve recovery performance and reduce the number of measurements. To this end, we propose several approaches based on the total variation (TV) minimization principle and take into account individual-layer sparsity, group sparsity over layers, and hierarchical group sparsity over layers to reduce the number of measurements. Numerical evaluation confirms the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

this research spatially and temporally investigates absence epileptic seizures using depth cortical data recorded from different layers of somatosensory cortex of Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg (GAERS). We model the recorded absence seizures by a linear superposition of a few epileptic activities which have spatio-temporal representations. Retrieving the epileptic activities from the recorded absence seizures is the main target of this study which helps us localize the onset layers of somatosensory cortex and understand the temporal evolution of recorded absence seizures.

Adaptive beamformers operating in snapshot deficient situations often estimate regularization parameters such as the diagonal loading level or the signal subspace dimension. We propose a new beamformer that avoids this problem by computing its array weights as a mixture of the array weights for a set of beamformers. the new beamformer's average output power asymptotically approaches the best performance of any of the beamformers in the set. Applying this technique to the Dominant Mode Rejection (DMR) beamformer obviates the need to estimate the dominant signal subspace dimension. An example simulation of a complicated passive sonar scenario illustrates that the blended beamformer's performance rivals the performance of the best fixed subspace DMR beamformer, and may outperform all of them in nonstationary environments.

In this paper, we are interested in phased-array imaging of an unknown area using narrowband RF signals and arrays synthesized by an unmanned vehicle. Typical phased array imaging approaches use fixed or pre-determined array configurations for imaging, which are not usually informative for the whole area. In this paper, we then propose an iterative adaptive imaging approach where we identify the uncertain regions in an initial image that need to be sensed better, find the optimal array location and orientation for such a sensing task and finally combine the new image with the initial image to obtain a better overall imaging quality. Such an approach is easily enabled by using robots to synthesize arrays. We validate our proposed approach with numerical simulations and show that an adaptive approach improves the imaging quality as compared to imaging with fixed arrays.

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using coprime array is discussed, and a fast method using a sensor-saving coprime array with enlarged inter-element spacing is proposed. Original coprime array combines the results obtained from two coprime subarrays to uniquely determine the DOA estimation, and it is shown in this paper that one subarray actually only requires half of its original sensor number and can achieve enlarged inter-element spacing based on the array compensation from the cross correlation matrix. thereafter, a fast DOA estimation method, which extracts the noise subspace without eigenvalue decomposition, is proposed to obtain coprime DOA estimations based on one dimensional root finding technique. Final unique DOA is estimated from the coincide results of the coprime estimations. Simulation results verify that the proposed method can achieve almost the same estimation performance as conventional methods while requiring less sensors.

the main-beam deceptive jamming reduces the estimation precision and tracking accuracy of the target, which brings huge resources consume and severe challenges along with threats. Besides, it is impossible to obtain perfectly orthogonal waveforms for all Doppler and delay pairs in the multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In this paper, based on the frequency diverse array (FDA)-MIMO radar with random polyphase codes, we have addressed the problem of the main-beam range deceptive jamming suppression with two steps. Firstly, the true and false targets are distinguished in the joint transmit-receive spatial frequency domain according to the time delay difference in the false target generation. Subsequently, due to the range mismatch, the main-beam deceptive jamming can be suppressed through a range-angle adaptive matched filter. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Unimodular sequences with good correlation properties have attracted significant research interest due to their applications in several areas such as radar sensing and communications. In this paper, we address the problem of designing unimodular sequence sets with good correlation and complementary correlation properties using generalized cyclic algorithms for the minimization of weighted integrated sidelobe level (WISL) based metrics. the set of sequences are obtained by considering their complete second-order characterization, which has been proven to be beneficial for identification and sensing systems employing widely linear signal processing. Several numerical examples have been presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

the Square Kilometre array (SKA) will push the boundaries of radio astronomy. As such, it will need enormous computing power to process the tremendous amount of data it will produce. Significant savings in computing could be made if some of this processing was done in single-precision. this paper presents our end-to-end modelling of the SKA Imaging Pipeline. We model the signals received by the Central signal Processor (CSP) using our Sky Generator Model. We then process the sky signals with our CSP Correlator Model to generate the visibilities that are passed to the Science Data Processor (SDP). these visibilities are gridded Fourier transformed by our SDP Imaging Model to produce a dirty image. this dirty image is then deconvolved to produce an image of the sky. through our models we investigate the error introduced with reduced numerical precision, and we perform various tests to explore the limits of single-precision processing.
