this paper addresses the localization of an unknown number of acoustic sources in an enclosure. We extend a well established algorithm for localization of acoustic sources, which is based on the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for clustering of phase differences by a Gaussian mixture model. Supporting a more appropriate probabilistic model for spherical data such as direction of arrival or phase differences, the von Mises distribution is used to derive a localization algorithm for multiple simultaneously active sources. Experiments with simulated room impulse responses confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm to the existing method in terms of localization performance.

this paper studies the impact of estimation errors in the sample space-time covariance matrix on its parahermitian matrix eigenvalue decomposition. We provide theoretical bounds for the perturbation of the ground-truth eigenvalues and of the subspaces of their corresponding eigenvectors. We show that for the eigenvalues, the perturbation depends on the norm of the estimation error in the space-time covariance matrix, while the perturbation of eigenvector subspaces can additionally be influenced by the distance between the eigenvalues. We confirm these theoretical results by simulations.

the problem of unimodular radar waveform design with similarity constraint in spectrally dense environment is considered. the corresponding optimization problem is non-convex and additionally large-scale. Indeed, the waveform length can be of several thousands and the waveform has to be designed in every coherent processing interval. Since the problem is non-convex, the majorization-minimization (MaMi) method is used for addressing it, and since it is large-scale, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is adopted. thus, we develop a computationally efficient approach for solving the problem by using MaMi with proper design of majorization function together with alternating ADMM with newly proposed computationally efficient proximal projections. We evaluate the computational cost of the proposed algorithm and show its fast convergence unmatched by existing approaches in terms of simulations.

Personal audio systems are designed to deliver spatially separated regions of audio to individual listeners. this paper presents a method for improving the privacy of such systems. the level of a synthetic masking signal is optimised to provide specified levels of intelligibility in the bright and dark sound zones and reduce the potential for annoyance of listeners in the dark zone by responding to changes in ambient noise. Results from a simulated personal audio system indicate that less acoustic contrast is required to produce the same level of privacy when artificial masking is included in the system design, compared with relying on the masking effect of background noise alone. As privacy requirements become more challenging, the advantage gained by incorporating artificial masking increases.

this paper presents a new two dimentional(2D) sparse array called the augmented L-shaped nested array based on the concept of fourth-order difference co-array. By properly choosing the relative positions of two L-shaped nested arrays, one could obtain a virtual planar array containing a large-scale hole-free uniform rectangular co-array. As a result, the degree of freedom could be greatly enhanced. Many theoretical properties are derived and simulations are included by considering the fourth-order cumulants of quasi-stationary signal to validate the superior performance of the proposed array in comparison with other 2D sparse arrays.

In this paper, we consider a multi-user massive MIMO network with hybrid beamforming architecture at the base station. the objective is to jointly perform user selection and design analog-digital hybrid beamformers in order to maximize a given utility function while satisfying various pertinent constraints. the problem is combinatorial and impractical to solve optimally for a large system. In order to overcome the problem we develop a low-complexity heuristic algorithm. We propose a novel metric to judiciously select a predefined number of appropriate users and to pick congruent analog beamformers from a given dictionary based on the sparse regression techniques. Complementary digital beamformers are then designed for the selected users and fixed analog beamformers. through simulations we analyze the performance of the proposed technique and compare it with the performance of standard techniques.

Hybrid analog-digital beamforming has been shown to reduce hardware cost and power consumption in massive MIMO systems, at the expense of increased radiated power for given performance targets. To alleviate the above shortfall, in this paper we exploit the concept of constructive interference (CI) that has been shown to offer significant radiated power savings in fully-digital multi-user downlink MIMO systems. We explore analog beamforming design, and develop solutions specifically tailored for CI-based hybrid beamforming. We also evaluate the performance of the presented techniques and their computational complexities using simulation results.

A large size phased array is a powerful system for surveillance, but must be appropriately decomposed as subarrays for efficient digital beamforming. One fundamental question is how to configure a large array as subarrays to satisfy various signal processing requirements. this work deals with two basic signal processing tasks, synthesizing multiple beams at subarray level and adaptively suppressing multiple interferences. Two optimization criteria to jointly design subarray configuration and digital weights for subarrays are proposed. To handle the large number of variables in the optimization formulations, we propose an alternating minimization approach with low computation cost. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) has been used to obtain source direction-of-arrivals (DoAs) from uniform linear array (ULA) data. the maximum number of sources that can be resolved using a ULA is limited by the number of sensors in the array. It is known that sparse linear arrays such as co-prime and nested arrays can resolve more sources than the number of sensors. In this paper we demonstrate this using SBL. We compute the mean squared error in source power estimation as various parameters are varied.

the Steered Response Power with phase transform (SRP-PHAT) is one of the most employed techniques for Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation with microphone arrays due its robustness against acoustical conditions as reverberation or noise. Among its main drawbacks is the growth of its computational complexity when the search space increases. To solve this issue, we propose the use of Neural Networks (NN) to obtain the DOA as a regression problem from a low resolution SRP-PHAT power map. the NNs can learn and exploit the information of the acoustic reflections of the room where the array is located with a training method that can be easily performed by an end user without technical knowledge.
