A large size phased array is a powerful system for surveillance, but must be appropriately decomposed as subarrays for efficient digital beamforming. One fundamental question is how to configure a large array as subarrays to satisfy various signal processing requirements. this work deals with two basic signal processing tasks, synthesizing multiple beams at subarray level and adaptively suppressing multiple interferences. Two optimization criteria to jointly design subarray configuration and digital weights for subarrays are proposed. To handle the large number of variables in the optimization formulations, we propose an alternating minimization approach with low computation cost. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Adaptive beamformers operating in snapshot deficient situations often estimate regularization parameters such as the diagonal loading level or the signal subspace dimension. We propose a new beamformer that avoids this problem by computing its array weights as a mixture of the array weights for a set of beamformers. the new beamformer's average output power asymptotically approaches the best performance of any of the beamformers in the set. Applying this technique to the Dominant Mode Rejection (DMR) beamformer obviates the need to estimate the dominant signal subspace dimension. An example simulation of a complicated passive sonar scenario illustrates that the blended beamformer's performance rivals the performance of the best fixed subspace DMR beamformer, and may outperform all of them in nonstationary environments.

the Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) filter for multiple object tracking is based on the assumption that at most one measurement originates from a target object. However, with the development of high-resolution sensors, it is often the case that multiple spatially distributed detections are obtained from a single object. To tackle this emerging data association challenge, this paper presents a JPDA method based on the Poisson spatial measurement model for extended objects. As the constraint that one target gets at most one measurement is relaxed, the marginal association probabilities can be obtained with linear complexity in the number of measurements and targets. the proposed method is compared to a partition-based multiple extended object tracking algorithm.

Frequency diverse array (FDA) radar for joint range and angle estimation has drawn much attention, but Doppler estimation is often ignored in the literature. In this paper, we propose joint range, angle and Doppler estimation for FDA-multiple-input multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar. In order to reduce the computation complexity, the Doppler is independently estimated firstly by the extended invariance principle instead of maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. Next, the range and angle are estimated separately with the unstructured model. that is, the three-dimensional search problem of joint range, angle and Doppler estimation is simplified into three one-dimensional search problems. the superiorities of the proposed method over conventional ML algorithms are verified by numerical results.

the eigenbeam-ESPRIT (EB-ESPRIT) is well known as a high-resolution parametric direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation technique for a spherical microphone array. Unlike other eigenbeam beamformers such as EB-MVDR and EB-MUSIC, there is no need for exhaustive grid-search with EB-ESPRIT. However, when sources are positioned near the equator, the EB-ESPRIT inevitably induces a singularity problem due to the singularity of its tangent function utilized as a directional parameter. Here, a new EB-ESPRIT technique based on a nonsingular directional parameter is proposed. the proposed technique is derived from two sine-based recurrence relations, and hence, can fundamentally avoid the singularity problems and identify more sources than the conventional EB-ESPRIT.

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using coprime array is discussed, and a fast method using a sensor-saving coprime array with enlarged inter-element spacing is proposed. Original coprime array combines the results obtained from two coprime subarrays to uniquely determine the DOA estimation, and it is shown in this paper that one subarray actually only requires half of its original sensor number and can achieve enlarged inter-element spacing based on the array compensation from the cross correlation matrix. thereafter, a fast DOA estimation method, which extracts the noise subspace without eigenvalue decomposition, is proposed to obtain coprime DOA estimations based on one dimensional root finding technique. Final unique DOA is estimated from the coincide results of the coprime estimations. Simulation results verify that the proposed method can achieve almost the same estimation performance as conventional methods while requiring less sensors.

One of the fundamental problems for hybrid beamformer design in MIMO systems is that, in Singular-Value-Decomposition (SVD) based beamforming, the analog beamformer is limited to constant modulus. In order to solve this issue, an algorithm is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the parallel data streams are expressed mathematically, and then the math expression of the analog beamformer is achieved through maximizing the power of desired data streams while minimizing the power of interference. then, the digital part of the beamformer is calculated based on a channel equivalent process, i.e., considering the phase response vector of the derived analog beamformers as part of the channel observed by the digital beamformers. Simulations are performed on the proposed algorithm and compared to a recent state-of-the-art technique. the results show that the proposed one outperforms in terms of sphere of application (i.e., different antenna array sizes and channel sparsities).

the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of quasi-stationary signals using a nested array in unknown noise field is investigated and two methods based on differencing method and eigenspace are proposed in this paper. through performing differencing between the virtual received data, the unknown noise component is directly removed from the data model. the resulting data model is then utilized to find out the DOAs of the signals based on the theory of subspace. thanks to the configuration of the nested array, it can produce large degrees of freedom (DOF) in the virtual sensor array which provides the virtual received data. these increased DOF can contribute enhanced resolution in DOA estimation. Numerical simulations of DOA estimation exhibit the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methods.

Polarized emissions from various astrophysical sources provide an additional means to infer the properties of the source. this information can be extracted by imaging the Stokes parameters characterizing these emissions, from the incomplete Fourier sampling measurements provided by the radio interferometer. To solve the corresponding ill-posed inverse problem, we recently proposed the Polarized SARA method which exploits the polarization constraint along with imposing an average sparsity prior for each of the Stokes parameters, encompassed in a reweighting approach. Motivated by the large amounts of data produced by the next-generation radio interferometers, in the current work, we propose a scalable version of this method, combined with an accelerating strategy. We showcase the performance of this improved method on a real dataset acquired by the Very Large array (VLA).

State-of-the-art hearing aids (HAs) can connect to a wireless microphone worn by a talker of interest. this ability allows HAs to have access to almost noise-free sound signals of the target talker. In this paper, we aim to estimate the direction of arrival (DoA) of the target signal, given access to the noise-free target signal. Knowing the DoA of the target signal enables HAs to spatialize the wirelessly received target signals. the proposed estimator is based on a maximum likelihood (ML) approach and a database of DoA-dependent relative transfer functions (RTFs), and it supports both monaural and binaural microphone array configurations. For binaural configurations, we propose an information fusion strategy, which decreases the number of parameters required to be wirelessly transferred between the HAs. Further, we show that the proposed method not only has lower computational complexity, but also performs better than recent DoA estimators, which have access to the noise-free target signal.
