Interference suppression is an important task in extensive sensor array applications, including large interferometric arrays in radio astronomy. the interferometric array design in terms of maximizing output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MaxSINR) calls for freely placing antennas on grid points without imposing any regularity conditions on the array structure. the configured sparse array exhibits multiple drawbacks, most notably, uncontrollable beampatterns with high sidelobes. To overcome these shortcomings, we add conventional beampattern sidelobe constraints in the design formulation. the resulting array is referred to as restricted beampattern array configuration (RBAC). Alternatively, we consider a new regularized placement array configuration (RPAC) strategy, where antenna position constraints are imposed as means for sidelobe control. In this case, the antenna selection is performed such that each segment of grid points must include one antenna, preventing very large inter-element spacing. We formulate the new RPAC problem and compare its solution to that of the RBAC.

We propose an approach for tracking a varying number of simultaneously active acoustic wideband signal sources in an acoustic enclosure. Relying on the assumption of W-disjoint orthogonality, the method uses narrowband position estimates of the sources for the targets. the instantaneous position estimates form clusters rather than single points, as would be required for a conventional Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter. therefore, we model the position estimates as extended targets and use a special form of the PHD filter, the extended target Gaussian mixture PHD filter, for tracking the targets. this allows to model target birth and death, which correspond to speech onset and end of utterance, respectively. With this model and by using the well-developed theory of Finite Set Statistics (FISST)-based multi-target tracking, we provide a comprehensive, strictly Bayesian treatment of the problem of tracking wideband acoustic sources using narrowband position estimates. We validate the results by tracking a varying number of targets in an enclosure simulated with the image-source method.

We present a method for cancelation of the acoustic crosstalk between the ears of a listener using a linear loudspeaker array. this allows for controlling the signals that arise at listener's ear independently of each other so that binaural cues can be imposed. We employ superdirective near-field beamforming (SDB) over the vast part of the frequency range. Allowing the listener to move in front of the array requires the computation of a new SDB solution for each possible position of the listener, which is a computationally expensive procedure. We show that the beamformer weights exhibit a very smooth evolution for listening positions along a line parallel to the array. this makes it straightforward to parameterize pre-computed beamformer weights with a few parameters for each frequency. Upon realtime execution, the beamformer weights can be determined efficiently for any arbitrary position along the listener contour from the parameters with negligible error. Simulation results show that the proposed beamformer provides a higher channel separation than previously published solutions while maintaining robustness.

In this paper, we investigate into joint direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar in the presence of gain-phase error and mutual coupling error. An auxiliary sensors-based framework is proposed, the matched array measurement of the MIMO radar is formulated as a parallel factor (PARAFAC) model, which links the problem of joint DOD and DOA estimation to PARAFAC decomposition. thereafter, the DODs and DOAs are obtained via least square strategy. the proposed method is computationally more efficient than the existing reduced-MUSIC method. Besides, it can achieve closed-form solutions for DODs and DOAs, which are paired automatically. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

In this paper, we propose a rate-distributed linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer for joint noise reduction and spatial cue preservation for assistive hearing in wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs). the WASN can consist of wireless communicating hearing aids, extended with additional wireless microphones. Due to the fact that each sensor node has a limited power budget, it is essential to consider the energy usage when designing algorithms for such WASNs. As the energy usage in terms of data transmission is directly affected by the communication rate, the proposed method optimally distributes the bit rate for each microphone node. the rate distribution is obtained by minimizing the total transmission costs under constraints on the noise reduction performance and spatial cue preservation of interfering sources. In contrast to sensor selection, i.e., binary decisions on the usefulness of a node, rate distribution allows for soft decisions, and, will lead to more degrees of freedom for joint noise reduction and spatial cue preservation than sensor selection. Numerical results show that given a certain noise reduction requirement, the proposed method displays improved energy efficiency and can preserve the spatial cues of more interferers compared to sensor selection approaches.

the main-beam deceptive jamming reduces the estimation precision and tracking accuracy of the target, which brings huge resources consume and severe challenges along with threats. Besides, it is impossible to obtain perfectly orthogonal waveforms for all Doppler and delay pairs in the multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In this paper, based on the frequency diverse array (FDA)-MIMO radar with random polyphase codes, we have addressed the problem of the main-beam range deceptive jamming suppression with two steps. Firstly, the true and false targets are distinguished in the joint transmit-receive spatial frequency domain according to the time delay difference in the false target generation. Subsequently, due to the range mismatch, the main-beam deceptive jamming can be suppressed through a range-angle adaptive matched filter. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Mechanical cardiac activity may be monitored with phonocardiographic (PCG) signals giving access to cardiac sounds. However, many noises interfere with cardiac information in raw signals and denoising such signals is necessary before interpretation. Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is of interest for time-frequency representations to separate noise and signal components. In this paper, to exploit the quasi-periodicity of the PCG, a quasi-periodic NMF (QP-NMF), based on multiplicative updates derived from a Majoration-Minimization algorithm, is proposed to decompose the PCG spectrograms. Numerical simulations show the good behavior of the proposed method to separate quasi-periodic components from the others. Finally, applied on real noisy PCG signals, QP-NMF shows its interest compared to an unsupervised NMF to denoise PCG signals.

Sparse arrays are considered as an effective solution to reduce the system complexity for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation as they can resolve more sources than the number of sensors. Inspired by such techniques, the coprime frequency-based array structure was recently proposed to further reduce the number of required sensors. Multiple sensing signals with mutually coprime carrier frequencies are transmitted, and the reflected signals are used to estimate the target DOAs. the cross-correlation obtained from each pair of frequencies provides additional degrees of freedom (DOFs). On the other hand, a compression matrix can be designed to reduce the dimension of the received signal vector, thereby effectively reducing the number of front-end circuit chains. In this paper, we use the compressive measurements of the received signal vector obtained from a coprime frequency-based array structure to estimate the signal DOAs. the proposed scheme can obtain an increased number of DOFs and high estimation accuracy because of the coarray operation and the large array aperture of the coprime frequency-based array structure. Meanwhile, the system complexity is also significantly reduced. the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated using simulation results.

there are many situations where ambient noise can disturb the listening of music through loudspeakers, the most usual inside cars, trains or airplanes. A common solution is to listen to the music through headphones, but in some cases, as for the car driver, it is not allowed. Even for the rest of the passengers of a car, it would be more comfortable to listen to the music without the need of headphones. In this paper, we have implemented a single-user perceptual equalizer that presents a good behaviour similar to previous solutions, but it is based on a linear additive auditory masking model. Moreover, we propose a new strategy to obtain the gains of the perceptual equalizer that does not depend on external parameters. Our alternative approach (linear additive masking model and robust equalizer design) makes possible to extend the perceptual equalizer to the multi-user case, i.e., when more than one user are considered and their own perceptual curves are interacting in the same enclosure. Objective measurements and informal listening tests have confirmed the good behaviour of the single-user strategy.

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the directions-of-arrival (DOAs) and ranges of multiple near-field narrowband signals impinging on a symmetric uniform linear array (ULA) in nonuniform noise in practical applications. By forming a Toeplitz-like correlation matrix from the anti-diagonal elements of the array covariance matrix to convert the nonuniform noise to a uniform one, a new subspace-based localization method is proposed, where the null space is obtained through eigendecomposition of the resultant Toeplitz-like matrix, and the MUSIC method is used to estimate the location parameters, while a new pairing scheme is presented as well. Additionally, an oblique projector based alternating iteration is presented to improve the estimation accuracy of the location parameters, where the "saturation behavior" encountered in most of localization methods is solved effectively. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) for the near-field signals in unknown nonuniform noise is also derived explicitly. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples.
