A variety of algorithms have been developed to compute an approximate polynomial matrix eigenvalue decomposition (PEVD). As an extension of the ordinary EVD to polynomial matrices, the PEVD will generate paraunitary matrices that diagonalise a parahermitian matrix. While iterative PEVD algorithms that compute a decomposition in the time domain have received a great deal of focus and algorithmic improvements in recent years, there has been less research in the field of frequency-based PEVD algorithms. Such algorithms have shown promise for the decomposition of problems of finite order, but the state-of-the-art requires a priori knowledge of the length of the polynomial matrices required in the decomposition. this paper presents a novel frequency-based PEVD algorithm which can compute an accurate decomposition without requiring this information. Also presented is a new metric for measuring a function's smoothness on the unit circle, which is utilised within the algorithm to maximise eigenvector smoothness for a compact decomposition, such that the polynomial eigenvectors have low order. We demonstrate through the use of simulations that the algorithm can achieve superior levels of decomposition accuracy to a state-of-the-art frequency-based method.

this paper focuses on a noncoherent flat Rayleigh fading wireless communication system with a single transmitter antenna and N receiver antennas, i.e., a single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) system, in which the channel coefficients vary in every one time slot. For such a system, a fast noncoherent maximum likelihood (ML) detection algorithm and a corresponding closed form symbol error probability (SEP) formula are derived. In addition, the lower and upper bounds on SEP are established to quantitatively characterize how quickly SEP decays when N goes to infinity, with two important concepts, full receiver diversity gain and geometrical coding gain, being introduced, showing that any nonnegative pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation enables full receiver diversity for the massive SIMO system. Furthermore, we find that an optimal received constellation that maximizes the geometrical coding gain is the geometrical constellation. Comprehensive computer simulations validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that our proposed optimal constellation attains significant performance gains over the currently available constellation design for the same massive SIMO system.

Spread-spectrum signaling offers robust communication over the multipath underwater acoustic channel, while at the same time allows multiple users to simultaneously occupy the entire continuum of the device-accessible bandwidth. However, limitations in temporal and spatial coherence of the underwater acoustic channel affect the maximum spreading code length and therefore the effective link data rate. In this work, we propose adaptive code length optimization toward high-rate spread-spectrum underwater acoustic communications. We first evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of the estimated minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) and auxiliary-vector (AV) linear filter receivers. We observe that the AV-filter based receiver significantly outperforms the estimated MVDR solution under limited data-record availability. We then investigate data rate trade-offs for optimized code lengths under pre-defined BER constraints in time-varying underwater acoustic channels. Simulation results verify that the proposed adaptive packetization scheme offers superior data rate performance under short data-record constraints imposed by the non-stationary nature of the underwater environment.

We consider the problem of sparse Fourier phase retrieval where the goal is to recover a sparse signal from the magnitudes of its Fourier transform. In our earlier work, it was shown that using a certain differential measurement model, it is possible to perform sparse Fourier phase retrieval with near-minimal sample complexity. Such measurements are realizable using interferometric imaging techniques and can remove the ambiguities inherent in Fourier phase retrieval in the noiseless setting. However, in presence of noise, such a differential measurement model can potentially lead to noise amplification and degrade the performance as sparsity increases. To address this issue, we propose to use a reweighted l(1) minimization algorithm in conjunction with our differential measurement model. Reweighted l(1) minimization has been successfully adopted in compressed sensing where it shows good performance in presence of large sparsity. We demonstrate a sparse phase retrieval algorithm based on reweighted l(1) minimization which shows superior performance in low signal to Noise ratio (SNR) and high sparsity regime.(1)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major auto-immune disease that is the leading cause of non-traumatic impairment of the central nervous system (CNS) in young adults. Successful treatment of MS patients depends on accurate tools for both the MS diagnosis and the disability progression. In current and upcoming studies the authors aim to explore the capabilities of applying a commercial electromyographic and inertial sensor (MYO Armband by thalmic Labs Inc.), coupled with a multichannel signal processing tool, to standard neurological examination of MS progression. In this pilot study we formulate a two-class "healthy control" - "having MS" classification problem. A dataset of electromyographic signals and inertial sensor measurements from 71 individuals (31 MS patients and 40 healthy controls) was acquired during standard neurological examination routine. Temporal and spectral features of the signals were extracted in order to train and validate a classification model. Finally, a Support Vector Machine classifier was obtained giving AUROC = 0.94, 95% CI = [0.88, 0.99]. We propose a set of signal descriptors that correlate with objective components of the neurological examination. the proposed signal acquisition and processing technique, being easy to integrate into the traditional neurological exam, may have high potential for aiding in quantifying MS progression.

In this paper, a beampattern design method is proposed for the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system with an interleaved array. To make full use of the whole aperture, first, the transmit array is partitioned into two interleaved subarrays, one is for radar and the other is for downlink communications. then, both the radar waveform and communication beamformers are optimized by combining the null-space projection (NSP) method and cyclic approach (CA) to perform the coexistence of MIMO radar and downlink communications. Besides, the communication beampattern can be utilized to improve the detection performance. Finally, several numerical results are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

this paper describes a method for detecting and tracking multiple moving targets using a multistatic narrowband radar sensor array. We show that the appropriate model for the sensor array measurements is non-linear and the statistics are non-Gaussian. We use this model in conjunction with a Bayesian estimation algorithm which constructs a probability density on the number of targets and their states. the density is approximated using a novel hybrid discrete grid/particle filter. We evaluate the performance on a set of experimental data from a 6-channel array to detect and track two targets that cross, make sharp turns, and move nearly cross-radially to some pairs for a significant portion of the collect.

In mobile communication, mutual coupling between array elements will affect the estimation performance of the existing direction of arrival (DOA) estimators. To tackle this problem, an accurate DOA estimation method for coprime array is developed, where the effect of mutual coupling is eliminated by the banded complex symmetric Toeplitz matrix, and further weakened via two-dimensional (2-D) interpolation. the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulation results in comparison of several DOA estimation approaches as well as Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

Each node or sensor in a network makes a local observation that is linearly related to a set of public and private parameters. the nodes send their observations to a fusion center to allow it to estimate a set of public parameters. However, the fusion center may also abuse this information to estimate other private parameters. To prevent leakage of the private parameters, each node first sanitizes its local observation using a local privacy mechanism before transmitting it to the fusion center. We consider the maximum privacy achievable under perfect utility in terms of the Cramer-Rao lower bounds. We propose a method to maximize the estimation error for inferring the private parameters while ensuring the estimation error for inferring the public parameters remains unchanged after sanitizing the sensors' measurements.

To reduce the consumption of spectrum and hardware resource, two methods are proposed to design the integrated waveform that can satisfy the requirements for both radar and communication. First, a linear superposition (LS) method is proposed to design the transmit waveforms of a uniform linear array (ULA). In the far field of the ULA, the designed transmit waveforms can simultaneously synthesize the desired radar and communication waveforms in different directions. However, the designed waveforms usually have high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). then, an alternative projection (AP) method is proposed to reduce the PAPR of the transmit waveforms. the AP method can devise the waveforms with constant modulus. Both the proposed methods can perform radar and communication function in different directions. Finally, several simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
