the global shortage of highly skilled employees has created a need for a more efficient onboarding process in software development companies. the experienced onboarding efficiency affects the new employee's willingness to stay within the company and the efficiency of their work. Our case company transferred to a team-based organization structure, where agile teams were given high autonomy. Supervisor responsibilities were divided among different roles, such as people coaches and a lead team. We studied the onboarding process through a survey that was answered by 39 persons, as well as 18 interviews to gather details from the onboarding process. To validate the findings, workshops, and presentations were organized in the case company. We found that mentoring was experienced as the most important form of onboarding in the case company. the biggest challenges were lack of transparency, insufficient material availability, and lack of documentation. As solutions were suggested: a shared repository of onboarding materials, checklists for teams and mentors for onboarding new employees efficiently, and collecting team-specific materials to a single location.

software maintenance is a key activity in software development requiring considerable effort and time. Hence, it is important to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the maintenance process. the objective of this article is to introduce a palette of indicators to assess the maintenance process based on indicators lean indicators. Four indicators aiming at detecting waste have been proposed, namely the inflow of maintenance requests, the flow of maintenance requests through the maintenance process with regard to continuous value creation and high throughput, the analysis of lead-times, and the analysis of workload. the research method is case study in which the proposed indicators were applied on the maintenance process of one case company (Ericsson AB).

To succeed in complex environments and handle the innovation, development and support, organizations have to find ways to support and regulate the autonomy of teams according to the environmental demands and limitations. Furthermore, there is no one-size-fits-all autonomy approach. the process of forming and implementing autonomous teams, as well as the effective functioning of such teams, is not yet adequately addressed and understood in the context of complex knowledge-intensive organizations. the second international workshop on autonomous teams investigated barriers for team autonomy: "What are the real-world problems to be solved for autonomous teams?" and "What concepts from the literature can be used to solve the problems?"

Reuse in an agile context is largely an unexplored research topic. On the surface, these two software engineering techniques would appear to be incompatible due to contradictory principles. For example, agile components are usually accompanied with little or no support materials, which is likely to hamper their reuse. However we propose that agile Reuse is possible and indeed advantageous. We have developed an Eclipse plug-in, named RASCAL, to support agile Reuse. RASCAL is a recommender agent that infers the need for a reusable component and proactively recommends that component to the developer using a technique consistent with agile principles. We present the benefits and the challenges encountered when implementing an agile Reuse tool, paying particular to attention to the XP methodology, and detail our recommendation technique. Our overall results suggest RASCAL is a promising approach for enabling reuse in an agile environment. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Artificial intelligence enabled systems have been an inevitable part of everyday life. However, efficient software engineering principles and processes need to be considered and extended when developing AI-enabled systems. the objective of this study is to identify and classify software engineering challenges that are faced by different companies when developing software-intensive systems that incorporate machine learning components. Using case study approach, we explored the development of machine learning systems from six different companies across various domains and identified main software engineering challenges. the challenges are mapped into a proposed taxonomy that depicts the evolution of use of ML components in software-intensive system in industrial settings. Our study provides insights to software engineering community and research to guide discussions and future research into applied machine learning.

We conducted an experiment attempting to compare XP with a traditional approach to student software engineering projects. We tasked two groups of student teams with producing a simple room reservation system, one group following a traditional development process, the other using XP. We observed little actual difference between the products delivered by either process. However, in our opinion this is due to certain deficiencies in the way XP was realized in this instance, rather than fundamental flaws in the process itself. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

this book contains the refereed proceedings of the 12th international conference on agile software Development, XP 2011, held in Madrid, Spain, in May 2011. the year 2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the agile Manifesto. In this spirit, the XP conference continued its fine tradition of promoting agility by disseminating new research results in a timely manner and by bringing together researchers and practitioners for a fruitful mutual exchange of experiences. As introduced for XP 2010, there were again two different program committees, one for research papers and one for experience reports. Regarding the research papers, 11 out of 56 submissions were accepted as full papers; and as far as the experience reports were concerned, the respective number was 4 out of 17 submissions. In addition to these papers, this volume also includes the short research papers, the abstracts of the posters, the position papers of the PhD symposium, and the abstracts of the workshops.

An agile organization adapts what they are building to match their customer's evolving needs. agile teams also adapt to changes in their organization's work environment. the latest change is the evolving environment of "hybrid" work - a mix of in-person and virtual staff. Team members might sometimes work together in the office, work from home, or work in other locations, and they may struggle to sustain a high level of collaboration and innovation. It isn't just pandemic social distancing - many of us want to work from home to eliminate our commute and spend more time with family. Are there learnings and best practices that organizations can use to become and stay effective in a hybrid world? An XP 2022 panel organized by Steven Fraser (Innoxec) discussed these questions in June 2022. the panel was facilitated by Hendrik Esser (Ericsson) and featured Alistair Cockburn (Heart of agile), Sandy Mamoli (Nomad8), Nils BredeMoe (SINTEF), Jaana Nyfjord (Spotify), and Darja Smite (Blekinge Institute of Technology).

DevOps has been identified as an important aspect in the continuous deployment paradigm in practitioner communities and academic research circles. However, little has been presented to describe and formalize what it constitutes. the absence of such understanding means that the phenomenon will not be effectively communicated and its impact not understood in those two communities. this study investigates the elements that characterize the DevOps phenomenon using a literature survey and interviews with practitioners actively involved in the DevOps movement. Four main dimensions of DevOps are identified: collaboration, automation, measurement and monitoring. An initial conceptual framework is developed to communicate the phenomenon to practitioners and the scientific community as well as to facilitate input for future research.

Currently, many financial organizations must undergo a digital transformation. In this study, we investigated a transformation in a Norwegian fintech company with the aim of understanding how the tasks performed by business development can be better aligned with the work of cross-functional development teams. Specifically, we examined the enablers and barriers to coordination between business development and software product development in large-scale agile software development. the organization under study had 25 software product development teams that followed an in-house agile model. We collected data by conducting 13 interviews and collecting various documents. Our findings suggest that having cross-functional fora, having a common understanding of what business development is, and coaching the whole organization to be more agile can improve coordination between business and software development.
