Modern large software-intensive development organizations are nowadays more and more often believed to transform their structures and operations towards large-scale agility in search for higher performances. Based on a survey conducted in Finland in 2018, in this paper we explore the current state of the affairs with respect to how extensively organizations are actually transforming themselves, in what ways this takes place in practice and for what goals. Most of the respondents were in large organizations. the results show that the majority of the surveyed respondents indicated that their organizations have conducted agile transformations or are currently doing so. Different strategies and tactics have been used in the transformations, but markedly the respondents reported most that the company has had external consultants (subcontracting) to assist in the change. the most important goals aimed to be achieved with agile means were productivity and quality (operative) and responsiveness to customer/market changes (new features). Notably only very few respondents reported their organizations to be currently non-agile (do not use at all agile methods in software development).

An experiment-driven approach to software product and service development is gaining increasing attention as a way to channel limited resources to the efficient creation of customer value. In this approach, software functionalities are developed incrementally and validated in continuous experiments with stakeholders such as customers and users. the experiments provide factual feedback for guiding subsequent development. Although case studies on experimentation in industry exist, the understanding of the state of the practice and the encountered obstacles is incomplete. this paper presents an interview-based qualitative survey exploring the experimentation experiences of ten software development companies. the study found that although the principles of continuous experimentation resonated with industry practitioners, the state of the practice is not yet mature. In particular, experimentation is rarely systematic and continuous. Key challenges relate to changing organizational culture, accelerating development cycle speed, and measuring customer value and product success.

Escalating commitment is a common and costly phenomenon in software projects in which decision-makers continue to invest resources to a failing course of action. We conducted a longitudinal case study exploring the effect of daily meetings on escalating commitment. this was done in an agile project building software for the oil and gas industry. By analyzing data collected over a period of four years, and drawing on concepts from self-justification theory we found that daily meetings contributed to maintain a situation of escalating commitment. this especially occurs if the meeting becomes a place for reporting and defending decisions with team members feeling that they have to justify their choices towards the project management or fellow team members. Early signs of escalation such as rationalizing continuation of a chosen course of action must therefore be taken seriously.

With the general trend towards data-driven decision making (DDDM), organizations are looking for ways to use DDDM to improve their decisions. However, few studies have looked into the practitioners view of DDDM, in particular for agile organizations. In this paper we investigated the experiences of using DDDM, and how data can improve decision making. An emailed questionnaire was sent out to 124 industry practitioners in agile software developing companies, of which 84 answered. the results show that few practitioners indicated a widespread use of DDDM in their current decision making practices. the practitioners were more positive to its future use for higher-level and more general decision making, fairly positive to its use for requirements elicitation and prioritization decisions, while being less positive to its future use at the team level. the practitioners do see a lot of potential for DDDM in an agile context;however, currently unfulfilled.

We give an overview of our recent initiative in designing a systematic framework to help teams continuously improve agile practices in large-scale and fast-expanding R&D centre. the framework is expected to be a closed-loop, light-weighted and sustainable one with positive business impact. To address these requirements, after several rounds of pilot, a "Revisit" framework is figured out, which consists of five major phases: 1) Goal/Problem-driven planning;2) Light-weight audit;3) Audit result analysis and reporting;4) On-demand Competence Development support leveraging resources across the organization;5) Progress tracking and effectiveness check. Also, a joint-force including a Revisit team, Revisit agents, and ScrumMaster community is setup to ensure the effective execution. Initial results indicate promising evidence this approach can help teams' quality and efficiency improvement.

Forming autonomous, self-organizing, cross-functional teams in software development is becoming more common even in larger organizations, and many organizations are implementing the Scaled agile Framework. When autonomous teams need to work together, they must sacrifice some level of autonomy since work needs to be coordinated with other teams, which could be a threat to team performance. this study presents how perceived autonomy has changed by listening to the voices from the teams in three large organizations. Although several respondents did not express any experienced changes to autonomy at all, others put forth important changes. the practices where several teams gather in joint events are important arenas in both positive and negative aspects. the arenas give teams a better overview and a sense of being empowered in using their veto right to stop overload of planned work. However, more detailed planning in every single team could cause less ability to switch work between teams and a sense of suffocation due to detailed routines and practices.

this paper describes management strategies for continuous improvement in agile software development teams. We have applied these strategies in a Brazilian team, which was born in 2009 and now grew into a headquarter of the company with ninety people. We have currently reached lean flow state with constant throughput, reduced lead time and enhanced quality by cutting bugs rate in half. In a continuous improvement cycle, our management strategies are based on looking at the situation, sensemaking the situation and providing simple responses. We describe how we applied these strategies to learn how to correctly limit work in progress (WIP) and to face challenges with coaching, estimates, team motivation, sprints and pair programming.

this paper presents an interdisciplinary case study of using extreme programming (XP) in a mathematics education research project. the educational focus of the study was the use of images and metaphors by children. the practices of XP allowed researchers to access students’ mathematical images and metaphors in a naturalistic setting centered on a real task, rather than in a purely education research-laboratory context. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

As agile is maturing and becoming more widely adopted, it is important that researchers are aware of the challenges faced by practitioners and organisations. We undertook a thematic analysis of 193 agile challenges collected at a series of agile conferences and events during 2013 and 2014. Participants were mainly practitioners and business representatives along with some academics. the challenges were thematically analysed by separate authors, synthesised, and a list of seven themes and 27 sub-themes was agreed. themes were Organisation, Sustainability, Culture, Teams, Scale, Value and Claims and Limitations. We compare our findings against previous attempts to identify and categorise agile challenges. While most themes have persisted we found a shift of focus towards sustainability, business engagement and transformation, as well as claims and limitations. We identify areas for further research and a need for innovative methods of conveying academic research to industry and industrial problems to academia.
