Web applications are well suited to be developed with agile methods. However, as they tend to change too fast, special care must be put in change management, both to satisfy customers and reduce developers load. In this paper we discuss how we deal with navigation and interaction requirements changes in a novel test-driven development approach for Web applications. We present it by indicating how it resembles and differs from "conventional" TDD, and showing how changes can be treated as "first class" objects, allowing us to automate the application changes and also to adaptively prune the test suite. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Developing areas in China are attracting increasing investment in manufacturing. this has increased the local demand for software and, consequently, demands on local software teams. Such teams, typically small, inexperienced and suffer high personnel turnover, often produce defective products. As software process improvement models are unsuitable for such teams, research was conducted applying a test-driven development (TDD) approach. TDD quickly improved the overall team performance. Our findings are applicable in other Asian developing countries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

As XP projects grow in size, the customer responsibilities need to be distributed to a group acting as a customer team. Learn how to express business rules as storytests [1], with a focus on expressing the business domain with clarity and brevity. Writing storytests (Customer tests) is usually complicated by several factors: the business domain needs to be understood, and often needs to be clarified. Storytests need to evolve to help this understanding evolve. Emphasis is often placed too early on the testing aspects, rather than on expressing the business domain as clearly as possible. the storytests often make premature commitments to details of the application being developed, or are not written until those details are known. this tutorial will give participants experience in expressing business rules well as storytests. We'll see that such storytests evolve as the whole team's understanding of the business needs and the system evolve. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

It is not surprising that agile methods are tailored or customized in various contexts and projects. However, there is little advice for practitioners for how to go about tailoring agile methods in large-scale projects. Henceforth, the aim of this experience report is to highlight some of the challenges with largescale agile software development and especially how to deal with these challenges involves continuous tailoring of the agile method in use. In so doing, we report from a large-scale agile software development effort involving more than 120 participants in a Governmental organization and running for 3,5 years. the project consisted of three deliverables, partly developed in parallel after a delivery model based on Scrum. After a much troubled start related to scaling challenges and architecture complexity during the first deliverable, the project was turnaround and the second and third deliverables were portrayed fairly successful by both supplier and customer. From a practitioner’s perspective, we found that novel practices emerged through out the project that improved the way of working – especially across teams and stakeholders. Based on this, we describe some guidelines for tailoring agile in the large. © the Author(s) 2016.

the abstract should summarize the contents of the paper and should Using design patterns is seen to improve the maintainability of software systems. Applying patterns often implies upfront design while agile methods rely on software architecture to emerge. We bridge this gap by applying complex refactoring towards patterns to improve software design. Complex refactorings are based on existing tool-supported refactorings, knowledge of the application to be changed, knowledge of design patterns, and the capability to generate necessary code for a given design pattern. We present complex refactorings to J2EE design patterns and describe requirements of complex refactoring and accompanying tool support. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

this paper discusses the adoption level of and experiences from using agile practices in three software development projects in a large Telecom company. the use of agile practices was more emergent than planned. Project managers and developers simply used practices they considered efficient and natural. the most widely adopted agile practices were to measure progress by working code, to have developers estimate task efforts, to use coding standards, having no continuous overtime, to have the team develop its own processes, to use limited documentation, and to have the team in one physical location. the projects used conventional testing approaches. Adoption of agile testing practices, i.e., test first and automated unit tests, was low. Some agile practices can just emerge without conscious adoption, because developers find them useful. However, it seems that an emergent process aiming for agility may also neglect important agile practices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

this paper reports the experience of an architecture team of a software development department with 25 agile teams in supporting technical decisions regarding technical practices. the main motivation to use technical debt metaphor was its acknowledged potential in driving software development and maintenance decisions, especially those long term maintenance tradeoffs which are usually less visible to developers and decision makers in general. We propose the use of a "technical debt board" with main technical debt categories to manage and visualize the high-level debt, combined with tools to measure it at low-level (software metrics and other kind of static analysis). We have found that our approach improved the teams’ awareness about the technical debt, stimulated a beneficial competition between teams towards the debt payment and enhanced the communication regarding technical decisions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

this paper is an exploratory work were the authors study how the technology of Formal Methods (FM) can interact with agile process in general and with extreme programming (XP) in particular. Our thesis is that most of XP practices (pair programming, daily build, the simplest design or the metaphor) are technology independent and therefore can be used in FM based developments. Additionally, other essential pieces like test first, incremental development and refactoring can be improved by using FM. In the paper we explore in a certain detail those pieces: when you write a formal specification you are saying what your code must do, when you write a test you are doing the same so the idea is to use formal specifications as tests. Incremental development is quite similar to the refinement process in FM: specifications evolve to code maintaining previous functionality. Finally FM can help to remove redundancy, eliminate unused functionality and transform obsolete designs into new ones, and this is refactoring. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

the number of software startups in Namibia has increased over the last decade, although most of them do not survive for long in the industry. For software startups to thrive, a suitable ecosystem is required to support them as the sustainability of startups is determined by the actions and interactions of the ecosystem actors. We aimed to gain a better understanding of the current software startup ecosystem in Namibia, emphasizing how the startup is connected to and supported by other actors in the ecosystem. Understanding the ecosystem will assist in informing future support needed by software startups to increase their sustainability and the growth of the ecosystem. An online questionnaire was employed to collect data from participants from software startups, as well as institutions that support software startups and entrepreneurs in Namibia. the results show that the Namibian software startup ecosystem is still in its early development stages and offers limited assistance for startups to grow. Access to finance is a challenge for startups, as most of the startups are founded and supported by personal funds, and few are funded by investors and Venture Capital funds and receive little to no financial support from the government. the universities play a role in supporting software startups through software development and entrepreneurial education, and training. Incubators and accelerators, although not a lot in the ecosystem, offer software entrepreneurs mentorship and a supportive environment to grow their businesses. the startups require more funding, access to resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities from other ecosystem actors.
