In this paper we present our approach to teaching High Performance Computing at boththe undergraduate and graduate level. For undergraduate students, we emphasize the key role of an hands on approach. parallel computing theory at this stage is kept at minimal level since this knowledge is fundamental, but our main goal for undergraduate students is the required ability to develop real parallel applications. For this reason we spend about one third of the class lectures on the theory and remaining two thirds on programming environments, tools and libraries for development of parallel applications. the availability of widely adopted standards provides us, as teachers of high performance computing, withthe opportunity to present parallelalgorithms uniformly, to teach how portable parallel software must be developed, how to use parallel libraries etc. When teaching at the graduate level instead, we spend more time on theory, highlighting all of the relevant aspects of parallel computation, models, parallel complexity classes, architectures, message passing and shared memory paradigms etc. In particular, we stress the key points of design and analysis of parallel applications. As a case study, we present to our students the parallelization of a real computational science application, namely a remote sensing SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) processor, using both MPI and OpenMP.

Our main interest is oriented towards keeping both local and parallel jobs together in a non-dedicated cluster. In order to obtain some profits from the parallel applications, it is important to consider time and space sharing as a mean to enhance the scheduling decisions. In this work, we introduce an integral scheduling system for non-dedicated clusters, termed CISNE. It includes both a previously developed dynamic coscheduling system and a space-sharing job scheduler to make better scheduling decisions than can be made separately. CISNE allows multiple parallel applications to be executed concurrently in a non dedicated Linux cluster with a good performance, as much from the point of view of the local user as that of the parallel application user. this is possible without disturbing the local user and obtaining profits for the parallel user. the good performance of CISNE has been evaluated in a Linux cluster.

We propose a learning method for solving the sparse data problem in automatic extraction of bilingual word pairs from parallel corpora. In general, methods based on similarity measures are insufficient because of the sparse data problem. the essence of our method is the use of this inference: in local parts of bilingual sentence pairs (e.g., phrases, not sentences), the equivalents of words that adjoin the source language words of bilingual word pairs also adjoin the target language words of bilingual word pairs. Our learning method automatically acquires such adjacent information. the acquired adjacent information is used to extract bilingual word pairs. As a result, our system can limit the search scope for the decision of equivalents in bilingual sentence pairs by extracting only word pairs that adjoin the acquired adjacent information. We applied our method to two systems based on Yates' chi(2) and AIC. Results of evaluation experiments indicate that the extraction rates respectively improved 6.1 and 6.0 percentage points using our method.

In this paper a novel medical image processing system is discussed. the core of the system is developed using a 16-bit fixed-point parallel architecture B-spline signal processing system. the statistical measure of finite word length effect is analytically developed.
