the current trends in computer animations, virtual reality and augmented reality applications have resulted in the problem of texture synthesis receiving considerable attention from the computer graphics and image processing research community. In this paper we revisit the well-known texture synthesis method, image quilting, first proposed by Efros and Freeman and propose improvements to its algorithms and implementation. Further, we outline its application within a multi-resolution framework, particularly suited for modern imaging applications associated with compressed image data. We provide experimental results to prove the effectiveness of the proposed modifications and variation.

this paper describes two different approaches to optimize the performance of SoC architectures in the architecture exploration phase. Both solve the problem to map and schedule a task graph on a target architecture under special consideration of on-chip communications. A constructive algorithm is presented that extends previous work by taking into account potential data transfers in the future. the second approach is a recursive procedure that is based on local search techniques in a specially defined neighborhood of the critical path. Simulated annealing and tabu search are used as search algorithms. Both approaches find solutions with better performance than established methodologies. the recursive technique leads to superior results than the constructive approach, however is limited to small and mid-sized problems, whereas the constructive algorithm is not limited by this issue.

In this paper, an FPGA implementation of a novel and highly scalable hardware architecture for fast inversion of triangular matrices is presented. An integral part of modem signal processing and communications applications involves manipulation of large matrices. therefore, scalable and flexible hardware architectures are increasingly sought for. In this paper, the traditional triangular shaped array architecture with n(n+l)/2 communicating processors, with n being the number of inputs, is mapped to a linear structure with only n processors. the linear and the triangular shaped architectures are compared in aspect of area consumption, latencies, and maximum clocking speed. this paper also show that the linear array structure avoids drawbacks such as non-scalability, large area, and large power consumption. the implementation is based on a numerically stable recurrence algorithm, which has excellent properties for hardware implementation.

Economical and efficient means to obtain the characterization of radio channels have been investigated a lot since mobile communication devices became popular. So, this article presents solutions and results for two electromagnetic scattering problems: an outdoor environment simulation, solved by applying the two-dimensional FDTD formulation and an indoor environment radiation scattering simulation, whose solution was based on the three-dimensional FDTD formulation. In both cases, the numerical domains were truncated by using the UPML formulation and solved though code parallelization techniques. Power received at specific points and field distribution are analyzed.

Applications based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) such as signal and image processing require high computational power, plus the ability to experiment with algorithms. To try to meet the dual requirements of high performance and ease of development, in this work we present a High Level framework for the implementation of FFTs for real-time image processing applications. the frequency-domain (convolution-based) image filtering problem is targeted by developing an FPGA-based parametrisable environment based on the proposed parallel 2-D FFT architecture for real-time operation. Results show that the parallel implementation of 2-D FFT achieves virtually linear speed-up and real-time performance for large matrix sizes.

Robotic airships for exploration of planetary bodies with an atmosphere: Autonomy challenges

Robotic unmanned aerial vehicles have great potential as surveying and instrument deployment platforms in the exploration of planets and moons with an atmosphere. Among the various types of planetary aerovehicles proposed, lighter-than-atmosphere (LTA) systems are of particular interest because of their extended mission duration and long traverse capabilities. In this paper, we argue that the unique characteristics of robotic airships make them ideal candidates for exploration of planetary bodies with an atmosphere. Robotic airships extend the capabilities of balloons through their flight controllability, allowing (1) precise flight path execution for surveying purposes, (2) long-range as well as close-up ground observations, (3) station-keeping for long-term monitoring of high science value sites, (4) transportation and deployment of scientific instruments and in situ laboratory facilities across vast distances, and (5) opportunistic flight path replanning in response to the detection of relevant sensor signatures. Implementation of these capabilities requires achieving a high degree of vehicle autonomy across a broad spectrum of operational scenarios. the paper outlines some of the core autonomy technologies required to implement the capabilities listed above, drawing on work and results obtained in the context of AURORA (Autonomous Unmanned Remote Monitoring Robotic Airship), a research effort that focuses on the development of the technologies required for substantially autonomous robotic airships. We discuss airship modeling and control, autonomous navigation, and sensor-based flight control. We also outline an approach to airborne perception and monitoring which includes mission-specific target acquisition, discrimination and identification, and present experimental results obtained with AURORA.

In this paper, we examine the performance of the iterative minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) adaptive receiver structure over asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) channels. the receiver base-station uses estimates of the detected users' symbols to improve the convergence rate of the adaptive algorithm. the iterative algorithm used is based on the parallel interference cancellation (PIC) algorithm, and we examine the transient behaviour of both the least-mean-square (LMS) and the recursive-least squares (RLS) algorithms in asynchronous (i.e., reverse-link) DS-CDMA systems. Our results demonstrate a significant convergence improvement for the asynchronous case. It is shown that for the more severe asynchronous case, the convergence speed of the iterative algorithm is even better than the one achieved for the synchronous channel model. Also, for systems with no power control, the iterative algorithm is shown to be near-far resistance.

this paper presents a software implementation of a very fast parallel Reed-Solomon decoder on the second generation of MorphoSys reconfigurable computation platform, which is targeting on streamed applications such as multimedia and DSP. Numerous modifications of the first-generation of the architecture have made a scalable computation and communication intensive architecture capable of extracting parallelisms of fine grain in instruction level. Many algorithms and the whole digital video broadcasting base-band receiver as well, have been mapped onto the second architecture with impressive performance. the mapping of a Reed-Solomon decoder proposed in the paper highly parallelizes all of its sub-algorithms, including Syndrome Computation, Berlekamp Algorithm, Chein Search, and Error Value Computation, in a SIMD fashion. the mapping is tested on a cycle-accurate simulator, "Mulate", and the performance is encouragingly better than other architectures. the decoding speed of the RS (255,239,16) decoder using two different methods of GF multiplication can be 1.319 Gbps and 2.534 Gbps, respectively. Furthermore, since there is no functionality specifically tailored to Reed-Solomon decoder, the result has demonstrated the capability of MorphoSys architecture to extracting instruction level parallelism from streamed applications.

Regenerative satellites with on-board processing offer great advantages for multimedia applications as they improve the global budget link and decrease the transfer delay when on-board packet switching is achieved. Meanwhile, they are often considered not flexible enough to follow evolution of services and transparent payload satellites are still used. this paper focuses on the introduction of flexibility at the satellite payload level. Two types of flexibility are considered: parameterization and re-programming. Firstly, the degree of flexibility is examined for the on-board digital and packet processes. Secondly, the support for flexible architectures is pointed out. the adaptation to the satellite environment of the software defined radio concepts and of the recent telecommunication works on the flexibility paradigm are analyzed. the FPGA approach for satellite payload is also detailed.
