this study employs portable measurement instruments to collect physiological data from elderly individuals, including EEG (Electroencephalography) devices and ECG (Electrocardiography) monitors. After the data is collected through these instruments, the brain wave signals generated by the brain are digitized and analyzed using statistical methods such as ANOVA. By synchronizing and computing these data on a computer, we use the obtained EEG and ECG signals as media to observe and evaluate the cognitive efficiency of the elderly in various environments. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

the purpose of this exploratory study was the integration of Digital Making activities in the curriculum of a computing course aiming to examine the guidelines for integrating Digital Making activities in the curriculum of a computing course as well as to explore the development of participants' soft skills. this exploratory study was performed during the Spring 2021 semester in an Introductory Programming course at a higher education institution in the Mediterranean in which ten (10) undergraduate students from various nationalities were enrolled. Students were working in randomly generated groups in a self-directed learning environment in which web resources along with manuals of the provided equipment were accessible by each participant. Each group had to work in a self-regulated learning environment to innovate, design and implement two (2) 'Smart Artefacts' which can solve real-life problems, using Microbit programmable boards and reusable materials within an unstructured Digital Making Curriculum. Data was collected from students, peers and the instructor using a mixed methodology that included self and peer assessment questionnaires along with observation and diary recordings. Existing assessment tools from the ATS2020 project were adopted for the evaluation of soft skills development. the analysis of the collected data was performed in two phases: a) the quantitative data were analyzed using paired t-test analysis, b) the qualitative data were analyzed and discussed with a group of experts. the preliminary results of the particular exploratory study, demonstrate the development of students' soft skills through Digital Making with emphasis on the skills of Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking and Communication. computer-aided diagnosis systems are used to process kidney ultrasound images with the goal of providing the clinicians with objective, computer-based analyses to improve the diagnosis accuracy. A crucial requirement to develop these systems is to accurately outline the kidney in ultrasound images. the majority of the computer-based methods that are proposed for outlining the kidney in ultrasound images are based on conventional segmentation approaches, such as active contour algorithms. Recently, deep learning semantic segmentation models have been employed to outline the kidney in ultrasound images. However, limited work has been made to investigate the possibility of combining conventional segmentation methods with the recently introduced deep learning semantic segmentation models to achieve effective outlining of the kidney. this study investigates the feasibility of combining deep learning semantic segmentation with a conventional active contour segmentation algorithm with the goal of improving the outlining of the kidney in ultrasound images. In particular, the performance of three deep learning semantic segmentation models, which are configured to use different backbone convolutional neural networks, has been studied in terms of their ability to detect the pixels that belong to the kidney in the ultrasound image. the best performing semantic segmentation approach is used to generate an initial outline for the kidney. Furthermore, a conventional edge-based active contour segmentation algorithm is used to refine and improve the initial kidney outline. the results indicate that our proposed approach for combining the deep learning semantic segmentation with the conventional edge-based active contour segmentation has achieved effective kidney outlining with Precision, Recall, F1-score, Accuracy, and Jaccard values of 94.2%, 89.6%, 91.0%, 98.4%, and 84.5%, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have gained popularity since the release of ChatGPT in 2022. these systems utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to analyze natural language, enabling users to have sophisticated real-time conversations with them. the existing literature on LLMs is mostly focused on system design and lacks dedicated research on investigating privacy and security issues. To safeguard the interests of various stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the associated security and privacy risks of these models. Our study utilized STRIDE and LINDDUN methodologies to investigate security and privacy threats of LLMs. We presented a detailed system model of LLMs and analyzed the potential threats, vulnerabilities, security considerations, and mitigation tactics intrinsic to the design and deployment of various system components. Our comprehensive threat assessment showcases potential threats imminent to the current generation of LLMs, such as unintentional data leakage or system misuse by malicious actors. Furthermore, our study discusses the importance of proactive security measures in LLM development, deployment, and maintenance. © 2024 IEEE.

In the near future, drones will play a key role in streamlining the delivery processes between businesses and their clients by utilizing high-accuracy localization. this study introduces a system that employs a 5G network, enhanced by multiple radio access technologies (RAT), to address the challenges of accurate positioning for drones. For indoor settings, where the 5G signal strength is not as robust as it is outdoors, we use Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) routers, here referred to as Wi-5G TRPs, to enhance location accuracy. these points connect through the 5G infrastructure to relay information to the same location management function (LMF) that manages the cellular 5G network. the core of our research demonstrates how the placement of Wi-5G TRPs inside buildings significantly influences how accurately they can pinpoint a location. By developing an innovative deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework, we tackle the complex challenge of determining the most effective arrangement of Wi-5G TRPs to achieve high-accuracy three-dimensional (3D) tracking of moving targets. Our findings indicate that the overall location accuracy is influenced by both the measurement errors and the spatial error distribution, known as geometric dilution of precision (GDOP). Our extensive tests confirm that inaccuracies are predominantly due to vertical measurements rather than horizontal ones. Lastly, by analyzing the outcomes of strategically placing the Wi-5G TRPs utilizing our proposed DRL-based solution, we can reduce the location estimation errors compared to arbitrary placements. © 2024 IEEE.

Electronic signatures are an essential component in the digitalization of processes and communication. When designing signature systems, legal regulations and data protection principles must be taken into account in addition to trust issues. this paper presents a web-based signature application using blockchain technology that also shows how signature information can be verified across providers with the help of a public blockchain. this design is intended to strengthen principles such as trust, sovereignty, data protection and data security as well as trust in the implemented system. Furthermore, new concepts such as URL- and QR code-based placeholders for signatures were implemented and tested, which have the potential to further accelerate and decentralize business processes. the system design is based on a set of criteria relating to trust, usability, privacy and the legal situation. In particular, the tension between data protection regulations and the use of blockchain technology had to be addressed. In addition, an iterative cost optimization of the Smart Contracts was applied in order to improve the potential economic viability of the system. © 2024 IEEE.

this paper presents a comprehensive approach to the development of an efficient control system for smart homes, addressing the issues of previous smart home systems, including automation, compatibility, and user-friendliness. Here, we design a smart home control system based on the principles of usercentric design and adaptive smart home systems. After identifying the gaps in previous smart home dashboards, it introduces the floating panel concept and recommender systems in the proposed smart home dashboard. Web development technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, and CSS are also used for seamless user experiences across different operating systems and platforms. the implementation of the proposed smart home system control is expected to improve the overall user experience and encourage more potential smart home users. Performance metrics in the proposed dashboard were substantially improved, with reduced loading times and higher performance scores;First Contentful Paint (FCP) reduced from 3.9 seconds to 1.2 seconds and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) from 5 seconds to 1.3 seconds. the Total Blocking Time (TBT) for the proposed dashboard is 0 ms, improving by 310 ms over the benchmark. © 2024 IEEE.

Injuries of the lower limb, particularly the knee, usually require several months of rehabilitation. Exoskeletons are great tools supporting the rehabilitation process;their research and suitable practical use are at the center of interest of researchers and physiotherapists. this paper focuses on designing a brain-computer-interface (BCI)-controlled exoskeleton for knee rehabilitation. It includes reviewing and selecting electroencephalography (EEG) acquisition methods, BCI paradigms, current acquisition devices, signal classification methods and techniques, and the target group of people for whom the exoskeleton will be suitable.
