this study designed an alternative Chinese keyboard layout for single-digit typists and evaluated the efficacy of this innovative layout design. the new eight row by five column keyboard layout was designed based on the principles of alternative keyboard design. Eight college students with proficient keyboarding were involved in this study. the repeated measurement experimental design was used to compare the speed and accuracy of keystroke among the four different keyboard patterns: QWERTY, Alternative, Revised-QWERTY, and Random-Altemative. the experimental results indicated that the subjects' typing speed is fastest when utilizing the QWERTY layout (63.86 symbols/minute), followed by the Alternative (56.02 symbol s/minute), Revised QWERTY (53.39 symbols/minute) and the Random-Altemative keyboard (49.94 symbols/minute). there is no significant difference among QWERTY, Alternative, Revised-QWERTY, and Random-Altemative layouts on the subjects' typing accuracy. the possible causes of the unpredicted results and suggestions for further studies were discussed.

designing embodied distributed systems, such as multi-robot systems, is challenging especially if the individual components have limited capabilities due to hardware restrictions. In self-organizing systems each component has only limited information and a global, organized system behavior (macro-level) has to emerge from local interactions only (micro-level). A general, structured design approach to self-organizing distributed systems is still lacking. We develop a general approach based on behaviorally heterogeneous systems. Inspired by the concept of population coding from neuroscience, we show in two case studies how designing an embodied distributed system is reduced to picking the right components from a predefined set of controller types. In this way, the design challenge is reduced to an optimization problem that can be solved by a variety of optimization techniques. Our approach is applicable to scenarios that allow for representing the component behavior as (probabilistic) finite state machine. We anticipate the paradigm of population coding to be applicable to a wide range of distributed systems.

the recent success of deep learning approaches relies partly on large amounts of well annotated training data. For natural images object annotation is easy and cheap. For biomedical images however, annotation crucially depends on the availability of a trained expert whose time is typically expensive and scarce. To ensure efficient annotation, only the most relevant objects should be presented to the expert. Currently, no approach exists that allows to select those for a multiclass detection problem. Here, we present an active learning framework that identifies the most relevant samples from a large set of not annotated data for further expert annotation. Applied to brightfield images of red blood cells with seven subtypes, we train a faster R-CNN for single cell identification and classification, calculate a novel confidence score using dropout variational inference and select relevant images for annotation based on (i) the confidence of the single cell detection and (ii) the rareness of the classes contained in the image. We show that our approach leads to a drastic increase of prediction accuracy with already few annotated images. Our original approach improves classification of red blood cell sub-types and speeds up the annotation. this important step in diagnosing blood diseases will profit from our framework as well as many other clinical challenges that suffer from the lack of annotated training data.

the paper focuses on robust 3D structure from motion of nonrigid objects from uncalibrated image sequences. A new affine factorization algorithm is first proposed to avoid the difficulty in image alignment for imperfect data, followed by a robust factorization scheme to handle outlying and missing data. the novelty and main contributions of the paper are as follows: (i) as a new addition to previous nonrigid structure from motion, the proposed factorization algorithm can perfectly handle imperfect tracking data;(ii) it is demonstrated that the image reprojection residuals are in general proportional to the error magnitude of the tracked features. thus, the outliers can be detected directly from the residuals, which are then used to estimate the uncertainties of the image measurement;and (iii) the robust factorization scheme is proved empirically to be more efficient and more accurate than other robust algorithms. the proposed approach is validated and evaluated by extensive experiments on synthetic data and real image sequences.

Recently, a lot of hybrid methods, which combine case-based reasoning (CBR) with a genetic algorithm GA, have been suggested in product designing. However, the suggested methods perform poorly in case of creative designing. In this paper, a novel simultaneous optimization method is proposed, which combine CBR and GA with an algorithm process for simulation of directed similarity association according to human being’s thought models.
