A fast differential evolution (FDE) approach to solve several constrained engineering design optimization problems is proposed. In this approach, a new mutation strategy "DE/current-to-ppbest/bin" is proposed to get a balance between exploration and exploitation of the population. What's more, a ranking based selection mechanism selects the promising individuals from the combination of parents and offspring to update the population. Experimental results on 5 instances extracted from engineering design show that FDE can acquire quite competitive performance. FDE is comparable to other state-of-the-art approaches in terms of solution quality. As for convergence speed, FDE is more fast, or at least comparable to, other state-of-the-art approaches. When the number of function evaluation is limited or the cost of function evaluation is expensive, FDE is a good choice.

Sectional views are widely used in engineering practice due to their clear and concise expression. However, large numbers of entities are missing in sectional views that makes it hard for computer to understand drawings. Feature identification is the key procedure for solids reconstruction from sectional views. Based on the analysis of the default drawing rules appearing in sectional views, a new algorithm is presented to identify and construct elemental objects in the procedure of volume-based 3D solids reconstruction. In this algorithm, a hint-based search strategy with priority principles is developed for identifying elemental features, even some of them do not have complete expression in 2D views. the algorithm is suitable for full sections, partial sections and offset sections, and there is no restriction on the number of sectional views included in one drawing. Experimental results validate our algorithm.

the semantic evolution of the Web has an heavy impact on traditional systems, as the ability to use a formal interoperable language simplifies information exchange between different systems. In order to foster information exchange and to easily connect new functionalities to semantic knowledge bases, in order to be able to use and reuse the valuable knowledge embedded in the existing systems, we designed a plugin-based framework, and used it to connect together different tools and systems developed in the LACAM laboratory. Our pilot project includes user profiling abilities coming from two components, namely Profile Extractor (PE) and Item Recommender (TTR), and storage capabilities implemented by a repository tool called RDFCore.

We propose a method for measuring the conceptual incongruity of a digital object using associated text meta-data. We show that this measure correlates well with empirical creativity ratings elicited from human subjects in laboratory settings. Extending our focus to online resources, we show that the predicted incongruity of a movie plot in the Movielens database is weakly correlated with users' ratings for the movie, but strongly correlated with variability in ratings. Movies with incongruous plots appear to elicit much more polarized responses. Further, in domains where cognitive theories suggest users are likely to be looking for incongruity, e.g. humor, we show, using the Youtube Comedy Slam Dataset, that user ratings for comedy pieces are considerably well-predicted by their incongruity score. these evaluations provide convergent evidence for the validity of our incongruity measurement, and immediately present several direct application possibilities. We present a case example of including incongruity as a recommender system metric to diversify the set of suggestions made in response to user queries in ways that align with users' natural curiosity.

the unmanned space flight software (FSW) domain contains a significant amount of variability within its required capabilities. Because of the large degree of architectural variability in FSW, it is difficult to develop a FSW software product line (SPL) architecture that covers all possible variations. In order to address this challenge, this paper presents a model-based SPL approach for FSW SPLs that manages variability at a higher level of granularity using executable software architectural design patterns and requires less modeling during SPL engineering but more modeling at the application engineering phase. the executable design patterns are tailored to individual FSW applications during application engineering. the paper describes in detail the application and validation of this approach to FSW.

Force analysis is made and force balance equations of main parts are deduced. computer program and software are developed to derive solutions to calculate the interact forces of the powered support. the dynamic simulations are made for powered support in different working conditions. the results show the variations of loads of the roof and the floor acting on canopy and base, and the variation forces of the front and the back linkages as the height of powered support increases. the simulation based design of powered supports have achieved great success in the application of integrated mechanized coal mining in Pingsu mines of Zhongmei Group in China.

An initial study surveyed academics involved in teaching industrial design in Australia, and overseas. the study sought to determine the approach of students, in various industrial design degree programs, to their final-year projects and the extent to which design process and design methods were incorporated in their project reports and documentation. these findings, together with teachings from the literature concerning how students go about design in the studio and the needs associated with project activity, led to the proposal of a generic model, entitled the Major Project Development Model "MPD Model". the operational criteria in the MPD Model guided the development of a computer-integrated system of design methods allocated to the respective phases of the process. this system, called the "MPD System", was designed to support and enhance student design work in major projects. the model and system were tested in use by a cohort of students during 2004. these results were contrasted against a cohort in 2003 that did not employ the model and process. the results, obtained from the use of this model and process, are presented. In addition, a model describing the relative complexity of projects has been developed and tested and the results included in this paper.

the purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the effects of keyboard adaptations for children with cerebral palsy. Twelve children aged from 7 to 15 years old participated in this study. Keyboard adaptation strategies were developed based on the individualized assessments. A group comparison experimental design was selected to examine the effectiveness of keyboard adaptations. Speed and accuracy of typing Chinese were compared before and after keyboard adaptations. the results indicated that children with cerebral palsy did increase their typing performance after implementing keyboard adaptation strategies. the results of this study can provide health and educational profession a reference when serving children with physical disabilities.
