In this paper we introduce a hierarchical region decomposition algorithm for triangle meshes segmentation based on quadric surface fitting. Initially, the whole mesh represents a single cluster. At every iteration, the region with largest error is divided and Lloyd iteration clustering is executed following, which make sure the segmentation has the minimum error in each hierarchical level. An error control strategy is used to get finally result automatically. Besides, users also can interpose this process by specifying the segmentation level. Each segmentation region after this process has a best fitting proxy of quadric surface. We propose an improved L 2,1 distance into a hybrid error, which is used in least square fit of quadric function. By comparing withthe state-of-the art methods, our method is testified to be insensitive to noise. Model optimization and hole filling based on our algorithm are demonstrated in the last.

Extending the frontier of visual computing, sound rendering utilizes auditory display to communicate information to a user and offers an alternative means of visualization. By harnessing the sense of hearing, sound rendering can further enhance a user’s experience in a multimodal virtual world. In addition to immersive environments, auditory displays can provide a natural and intuitive human-computer interface for many desktop applications. In this paper, we give a brief overview of recent work at UNC Chapel Hill on fast algorithms for sound synthesis and sound propagation. these include physically-based sound synthesis for rigid bodies and liquid sound generation, as well as numeriC and geometric algorithms for sound propagation. We highlight their performance on different benchmarks and briefly discuss some problems for future research.

A trimmed surface is usually represented as a parametric surface with a set of trimming curves. However, many CAD processes and algorithms cannot be applied to trimmed surfaces directly because of the complexity in manipulating trimmed surfaces. Moreover, trimmed surfaces will create gaps between different trimmed surfaces. thus it is desirable to represent a trimmed surface by a group of regular surfaces, such as NURBS or Bezier surfaces. the present paper provides an algorithm to split a trimmed NURBS surface into several NURBS or Beacutezier surfaces. the surface patches which domains are far away from the trimming curves coincide withthe given trimmed NURBS surface and the patches which domains are close to the trimming curves are represented with high degree Beacutezier surface patches (exact) or bi-cubic B-spline surfaces (approximate). the algorithm is simple, efficient and easy to implement. Compared with previous approaches (and), the new algorithm doesn't change the parameterization of most regions and is easy to maintain the continuity. Since our algorithm can keep most of the patches unchanged, most of the surface patches will be C 2 continuous. this paper mainly analyzes the wave dispersion relations and associated modal pat tens in the inclusion-reinforced composite plates including the effect of inclusion shapes, inclusion contents, inclusion elastic constants, and plate thickness. the shape of inclusion is modeled as spheroid that enables the composite reinforcement geometrical configurations ranging from sphere to short and continuous fiber Using the Mori-Tanaka mean-field theory, the effective elastic moduli which are able to elucidate the effect of inclusion's shape, stiffness, and volume fraction on the composite's anisotropic elastic behavior can be predicted explicitly then, the dispersion relations and the modal patterns of Lamb waves determined from the effective elastic moduli can be obtained by using the dynamic stiffness matrix method. Numerical simulations have been given for the various inclusion types and the resulting dispersions in various wave types on the composite plate. the types (symmetric or antisymmetric) of Lamb waves in an isotropic plate can be classified according to the wave motions about the midplane of the plate. For an orthotropic composite plate, it can also be classified as either symmetric or antisymmetric waves by analyzing the dispersion curves and inspecting the calculated modal patterns. It is also found that the inclusion contents, aspect ratios and plate thickness affect propagation velocities, higher-order mode cutoff frequencies, and modal patterns.

Tetra has recently designed and fabricated a 25-stage prototype electromagnetic coil gun. To date, five stages have been successfully tested. Initial results track very well with predicted values. Each coil is sequentially fired as the projectile moves down the bore. A hybrid control system is used to measure the velocity of the projectile as it enters each coil and calculates the time-to-firing. computer predictions based on this model indicate velocities greater than 3000 m/s can be achieved. Currently, the system has been tested with10 kJ delivered to each coil. Solid dielectric switches are used to transfer the energy from each capacitor to the coils. Performance of the coil gun, computer modeling, and laboratory results are discussed.
