Natural and intuitive human-computer interfaces, while striving for immersive experience, often suffer from relatively cumbersome input methods. Mice and keyboards are widely accepted yet limited to point-and-click and basic textual editing operations, distancing the user from the world presented to them. Touch-screen based gestures have introduced a partial solution to this problem. However, they are constrained due to size, weight and positioning and currently provide limited gesture-based operations. In this paper, we propose a gesture model by meta-action formulation based on observations of existing touch gestures as experienced from different perspectives such as type, multiplicity, stage-of-control and control space. We then propose a kernel gesture set which forms the basis of a unified user experience across a large variety of applications and devices. In order to show the effectiveness, intuitiveness and adaptability of the proposed kernel gesture set, a user study is given. We further implement and extend the kernel gesture set through a case study in a very practical domain: garment modeling. © 2011 ACM.

At ICEL 2014 in Valparaiso the authors presented a paper on the importance of developing metacognition in students, to support changes and developments in pedagogy and learning models. Following on from that paper, we now consider and present outcomes from three projects reflecting different stages of the learning continuum, with which we are engaged. Firstly, the Computing at Schools project in the UK has been running for over five years, and has been successful in gaining the support of the UK government for the introduction of computer Science teaching in schools at both primary and secondary levels. Critical to the success of this project is a change in the pedagogic model adopted by the schools, moving from fairly standard instructivist models for teaching in the primary schools and in teaching coding and factual information to more constructivist approaches, using flip classrooms and other TEL (technology enhanced learning) tools and techniques to help pupils develop Computational thinking skills. Within our own University, we have been working on a project called Greenwich Connect, which aims to provide our students with a comprehensive set of online services and facilities supporting all aspects of the student experience. As part of this project staff are encouraged to develop learning materials using TEL tools, and to adopt more constructivist and student-centric teaching approaches. Within the UK University context, we already have an excellent example of a strong constructivist, student centric teaching model in the PhD studentship. A PhD student is encouraged to investigate the body of knowledge, with appropriate advice and guidance from experienced and knowledgeable supervisors, and then to take control of their own learning process by identifying their research question, experimental model and analytical methodology. they then carry out and write up their research, with their supervisors now available as experts to be consulted at need, and produce an

this paper carried out research on sketch of conceptual design. through deriving the semantic of different strokes and perspective projection in the sketch, the creation of design was recorded, analyzed and comprehended. the indistinct novel information of sketch then could be translated into useful information for backend engineering design. As an enhancement and extension of previous methods and above research, a method was proposed that was more suitable for the design habits, and 3D sketch was achieved to support conceptual design.

Reliable behavior of systems of autonomous agents - such as collections of deployed robots - is difficult to attain. Agents could provide mutual support, but lack of coordination may weaken, rather than increase reliability. We propose collective reuse of replaceable software components among autonomous agents, based upon a shared factory architecture. Coordinated replacement is achievable on-the-fly, whatever the component status: idle, runnable or actually running. Replacement propagation among agents grows faster with increasing numbers of agents for practical collection sizes, as measured by a reliability speedup. the architecture was demonstrated by simulations combining real and virtual robots.

In the case of designers, architects and arts, tools are part of a repertoire of cognitive, symbolic, and semiotic artifacts with which each explores and learn about design problems. Nonetheless, when using digital fabrication tools, a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is made appears as an evident problem since many of the perceptual aspects of sensing and thinking about new things in the making are neglected. It is argued that this establishes a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is executed as an outcome from that idea. How designers can think, learn and augment their creativity by using digital tools in a more relational, exploratory, interactive and creative way? Furthermore, how can we teach design using contemporary fabrication tools beyond its representational capabilities? this paper explores the richness of using digital fabrication tools through the lens of shapes grammars as a design paradigm in order to extend computational making including digital fabrication tools, gestures and material behavior as crucial actors of the design process. through the use of discrete heuristics - that is, the elaboration of deictic rules for computation with physical objects, materials and fabrication tools in a precise yet perceptual way- this paper shows experiments inside a third year design studio to overcome the hylomorphism present in the digital design and make dichotomy. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Assistive devices such as passive or active orthoses are used in the cases of lower limb damage. For the design of an active orthosis, it is necessary to take into account the physical parameters of the patient and to calculate the characteristics of the actuator for joint articulation. It is important to decide which type of orthosis is most appropriate to use, as well as whether the use of orthosis improves or deteriorates human walking. In this paper the developed computer models for analysis of data obtained from an autonomous adaptive system for actuation, data acquisition and control of active ankle-foot orthosis are presented. the system can operate in three modes: data collection mode, assistive mode and data monitoring mode. Mathematical model of the orthosis together with the control unit and actuator for positioning of the foot orthotic segment and the dynamic system simulation is done in Matlab Simulink and SimMechanics. A graphical program written in MATLAB receives and visualizes the data during walking, giving us the representation of the signals obtained from the autonomous system. For visualization of the signals measured in real time along a treadmill in laboratory conditions, a Lab View virtual instrument has developed.

High voltage switchgear products always produce a great lot of parts models and design information in digital *** such products have the characteristics of series and complexity. therefor, this paper takes a certain series of outdoor HV isolating switchgear as an example, and multiattribute mapping parts library system has been researched and developed based on C/S mode for corporate design department, which achieves an effective classification ,dynamic management ,information integration, reuse and variant design of parts. Simultaneity, this system is seamlessly integrated with the Inventor 2008 design software. All of these can greatly improve system efficiency and design efficiency, and shorten the product development cycle.

3D CAD is a tool for designers to transform ideas into a shape and examine and finalize such ideas. If techniques related to 3D CAD are effectively used, time and confusion can be reduced and an effective tool for representing design information can be established. therefore, to establish a new concept of drawings, we should examine the effective use of 3D annotated models. In this paper, (1) fundamental knowledge of machinery is generally examined to design machines using 3D CAD. (2) Improvement in the skills of machine designers is also examined by considering the shape modeling technique using 3D CAD (design = shape determination = ambiguity reduction and shape contriving). (3) the significance of 3D annotated models and the training method for beginners in mechanical design are explained. (4) the actual design process is examined and analyzed, and an example of a practical training method is introduced. To effectively utilize 3D CAD, users must understand its characteristics and fully utilize its functions. Satisfactory learning effects were obtained through design training using 3D annotated models for beginners in mechanical design, who received courses on fundamental knowledge of mechanical design and performed practical design assignments (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) simultaneously. © 2019, Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Constructing an energy efficient harvesting platform along with a resource management system (RMS) for energy harvesting wireless body area networks (EH-WBAN) for monitoring the health condition of the patients, and detecting arising diseases in the early stages, is becoming today's global evolution. the usage of sensors in constructing intelligent wireless body area networks (WBAN) health monitoring and disease awareness systems especially biosensors is quite a challenge. the reason for this is that such a design needs a continuous power source, therefore, a reliable management system is required to manage the power consumption, and the power needed to get the system going, to ensure extending the lifetime of the sensor nodes while providing the wireless body area networks (WBAN) with efficient energy. Energy harvesting is the process of capturing, collecting, and storing such energy for later use. these small amounts of energy are from one or more naturally occurring energy sources also known as ambient energy sources. Based on the needs and requirements of the network's applications. the process of designing the most suitable energy harvesting system in addition to its matching energy and power management system is extremely important. © 2021 ACM.

With the rapid development of Space Information Network and users' demand for communication services, interconnecting heterogeneous space networks becomes a new trend of SIN development. Networks using different protocols, such as TCP/IP, CCSDS and DTN, cannot communicate directly. In order to interconnect heterogeneous networks and face the problems brought by the challenged environment, this paper designs a multi-protocol onboard router which depends on the "store-and-forward" mechanism in DTN network protocol, as a relay with the ability of multi-protocol switching in order to support communication services among heterogeneous networks.
