Usability studies often use methods focused on product parameters. Test designs are processed in laboratories and evaluation is commonly performed by expert opinions. For validation studies we want to point out the importance of field studies and user and system oriented evaluation. For this purpose we want to present the methodological approach iFlow (information flow) as multiple assessment technique for usability issues in real or quasi-real (simulated) situations. the idea of iFlow is to assess input and output workload via video and audio recordings combined with subjective and objective measurement techniques of workload. In this contribution the iFlow method and an evaluative study in anesthesiology are presented. the added value to already existing methods and approaches is considered in the sensitivity of iFlow to identify situations of overload in a descriptive way. For design interventions it would be helpful to consult the iFlow chart to deduct cause and effect relations. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

the Ensemble computing education portal is part of the US NSF's National Science Digital Library (NSDL). the underlying assumption in Ensemble's design is that people will not come just because we build something new. the information must be available from wherever potential users are. this poster describes early efforts to provide multiple community oriented entry points to multiple sources relevant to computing educators.

the share of renewable energy sources in the power grid is showing an increasing trend world-wide. Most of the renewable energy sources are intermittent and have generation peaks that do not correlate with peak demand. the stability of the power grid is highly dependent on the balance between power generation and demand. Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems have been utilized to receive and store the electrical energy from the grid during off-peak hours and play the role of an auxiliary power plant during peak hours. Using thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems with CAES technology is shown to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of generated power. In this study, a modular solid-based TES system is designed to store thermal energy converted from grid power. the TES system stores the energy in the form of internal energy of the storage medium up to 900 K. A three-dimensional computational study using commercial software (ANSYS Fluent) was completed to test the performance of the modular design of the TES. It was shown that solid-state TES, using conventional concrete and an array of circular fins with embedded heaters, can be used for storing heat for a high temperature hybrid CAES (Hth-CAES) system.

Product data management (PDM) is a popular topic for concurrent engineering to manage and access to product data in a company. there are commercial PDM softwares and companies use different PDM systems which are most suitable for their needs. For collaboration with their suppliers, companies need to interface their PDM systems with PDM systems of their suppliers. It will result faster product information flow between OEM and its suppliers. this study proposes to integrate 2 different PDM systems by PLM services, which is based on Web services. Currently, the process of monitoring children's growth in Indonesia relies on manual methods for collecting anthropometric data. these methods pose a risk of data recording errors. Additionally, the ratio of healthcare workers to children in Indonesia is 1:90, a significant disparity that hinders efforts to reduce the prevalence of stunting in the country. To support the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which emphasizes 'Good Health and Well-being,' it is crucial to address issues in the stunting management process, from data collection to monitoring. the design and development of this iOS-based mobile application aim to assist in monitoring child growth and provide guidance and steps for prevention and treatment. Besides application development, it also involves the design and development of an Internet of things (IoT) system to aid in the collection of children's anthropometric data. the research methodology includes studying stunting cases in Indonesia, anthropometric data calculation methods, stunting prevention and management steps, application design and development, automatic anthropometric data collection, and online data storage and transmission using IoT technology. the developed application and system have been tested and successfully integrated. the IoT device has an accuracy rate of 99.83% for weight measurement calibration and 98.68% for height or length measurement calibration. From the testing results of the child condition calculation method in the application, an accuracy rate of 100% was achieved. © 2024 IEEE.

the design of microstrip patch antennas using the method of moments is studied. the Moment Method solution for the dielectric geometry is implemented by using rectangular volume cells. the results based on the volume polarization current theorem using the method of moments are in excellent agreement with the measurements. the edge discontinuity current basis functions and the principle of using rectangular volume cells made the method acceptable for low computer memory and execution time.

Our research concerns formal, expressive, object-centred languages and tools for use in engineering domains for planning applications. In this paper we extend our recent work on an object-centred language for encoding pre-condition planning domains to a language called OCLh, designed for HTN planning. Domain encodings for HTN planners are particularly troublesome, because they tend to be used in knowledged-based applications requiring a great deal of `domain engineering', and the abstract operators central to an HTN model do not share the fairly clear declarative semantics of concrete pre- and post condition operators. Central to our approach is the development, in parallel, of the abstract operator set and the hierarchical state specification of the objects that the operators manipulate. We also define and illustrate a transparency property, together with a transparency checking tool, which helps the developer to encode a clear planning model in OCLh. Our encoding of the Translog domain is used as an extended example to illustrate the approach.

this paper describes the design of high-performance unified image scaler circuit for real-time object detection. the proposed circuit generates nine scaled images at the same time for each VGA image. Each scaled image has a different level of resolution with the scaling factor of 0.8. In order to provide the real-time processing capability, original image data are stored in internal memories and reused to generate nine resized images. In addition, the operation of bilinear interpolation is shared in order to reduce the circuit size. We described the high-performance unified image scaler circuit using Verilog HDL and synthesized the gate-level circuit using 130nm standard cell library. the synthesized circuit consists of 20,452 gates and its maximum operating frequency is 254MHz. Since the proposed circuit processes 24 640x480 image frames per second and generates nine resized images for each 640x480 image frame, it can be applied in many applications such as real-time object detection.

With the advent of Internet of things, the field of domain sensing is increasingly being servitized. In order to effectively support this servitization, there is a growing need for a powerful and easy-to-use infrastructure that enables seamless sharing of sensor data in real-time. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of Data Quality-Aware Sensor Cloud (DQS-Cloud), a cloud-based sensor data services infrastructure. DQS-Cloud is characterized by three novel features. First, data-quality is pervasive throughout the infrastructure ranging from feed discovery to failure resilience. Second, it incorporates autonomic-computing-based techniques for dealing with sensor failures as well as data quality dynamics. third, DQS-Cloud also features a unique sensor stream management engine that optimizes the system performance by dynamically placing stream management operators. this paper reports several experiments to study the effectiveness and the efficiency of the framework.

Various methods have been proposed for the design of TMD systems. In these methods various assumptions have been made regarding the simulation of the acting dynamic force, its location and the criteria used in defining the optimum design parameters of the TMD system. On the other hand attention and research is increasing about generating or predicting earthquake time history records for design purposes. In the present work, a method is suggested for the optimum design of tuned mass damper (TMD) system for structures subjected to a specific or given earthquake base excitation. the method can be applied to SDOF or MDOF shear building structures. In this method, the values of the optimum stiffness and optimum damping for a given TMD mass are defined as the values that will reduce a specific response of the structure to a minimum value when subjected to an earthquake time-acceleration history. the specific response selected in the present study is the maximum relative displacement of the structure. thus the problem can be restated as multivariable, nonlinear constrained minimization problem. Based on this formulation a MATLAB computer program is developed. the program consisted of two main subroutines. the first was a dynamic analysis subroutine for the analysis of SDOF or MDOF shear building structures with TMD system. this part is embedded in another subroutine for nonlinear constrained optimization to compute the optimum design parameters of the TMD system. the developed software is then used in selected case studies showing convergence of the present study results to optimal solutions and efficiency when compared to other methods for designing TMD systems.
