Black-box machine translation systems have proven incredibly useful for a variety of applications yet by design are hard to adapt, tune to a specific domain, or build on top of. In this work, we introduce a method to improve such systems via automatic pre-processing (APP) using sentence simplification. We first propose a method to automatically generate a large in-domain paraphrase corpus through back-translation with a black-box MT system, which is used to train a paraphrase model that "simplifies" the original sentence to be more conducive for translation. the model is used to preprocess source sentences of multiple low-resource language pairs. We show that this preprocessing leads to better translation performance as compared to non-preprocessed source sentences. We further perform side-by-side human evaluation to verify that translations of the simplified sentences are better than the original ones. Finally, we provide some guidance on recommended language pairs for generating the simplification model corpora by investigating the relationship between ease of translation of a language pair (as measured by BLEU) and quality of the resulting simplification model from back-translations of this language pair (as measured by SARI), and tie this into the downstream task of low-resource translation.

the design of steering linkage must meet Ackerman steering characteristic, and the change of toe-in angle during wheel jumping should be the smallest. the virtual prototype model of McPherson suspension and steering linkage is established by using the ADAMS software. Due to the ADAMS software’s limitation in optimized method, an optimize method that combine MATLAB genetic algorithm toolbox with ADAMS software is used, the steering linkage is optimized which take the Ackerman steering error and the change of toe-in angle during wheel jumping as optimal objective function. the simulation result indicates that the Ackerman steering characteristic and the toe-in angle characteristic are both improved after the optimization.

Stratified rock mass has been widely existing in geotechnical engineering, especially in tunnel engineering. When tunnel excavated in stratified rock mass, the stress and deformation characteristic of the surrounding rock mass are very different from that in the normal rock mass. In order to study the stress and deformation response tunnel excavation, numerical model is built by the commercial package ANASYS, then the model is transferred based on the self-compiled program to the to the FLAC3D for calculation, then the excavation of tunnel is simulated to find out the effect of the excavation disturbance on the tunnel surrounding rock mass. During simulation procedure, different insitu-stress is set to the model to obtain effect of different horizontal stress on the calculation results, such as the unbalance force of the tunnel surrounding rock mass, the maximum displacement of the tunnel, the horizontal displacement contour and the vertical displacement contour. the calculation result can give some guidance for the real practice.

this paper presents an overview of confined masonry design and construction, featuring the design and construction guidelines for confined masonry buildings developed by the Confined Masonry Network under the auspices of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the international Association for Earthquake Engineering, and other organizations. international expert committees were formed in 2008 to develop guidelines for design and construction. As the initial step, the committees performed a review and comparison of relevant international codes, standards, and guidelines for confined masonry construction from Latin America, Asia, and Europe. Next, the group developed a design guideline with prescriptive design provisions for low-rise confined masonry buildings up to two stories high. Published in August 2011, the guideline includes recommendations for the layout, wall density, and size of confined masonry components. Currently in production are two additional confined masonry guidelines, a design guideline for engineered buildings and a construction guideline. the scope of the engineered guideline includes recommendations for the design of masonry walls, concrete elements, and foundations, with particular emphasis on analysis methods including modeling approaches and computer-based numerical analysis methods. the construction guideline includes recommendations for site selection, foundation placement, masonry construction, concrete placement, floor and roof construction, and quality assurance.
