Our paper investigates the message complexity of two fundamental problems, leader election and agreement, in the crash-fault synchronous and fully-connected distributed network. We present randomized algorithms for both the problems and also show non-trivial lower bounds on the message complexity. Our algorithms achieve sublinear message complexity in the so-called implicit version of the two problems when tolerating more than a constant fraction of the faulty nodes. In comparison to the state-of-art, our results improved and extended the works of [Gilbert-Kowalski, SODA'10] (which studied only the agreement problem) in several directions. Specifically, our algorithms tolerate any number of faulty nodes up to (n - polylog n). the message complexity (and also the time complexity) of our algorithms is optimal (up to a polylog n factor). Further, our algorithm works in anonymous networks, where nodes do not know each other. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first sublinear results for both the leader election and the agreement problem in the crash-fault distributed networks. I/O constitutes a significant portion of most of the application run-time. Spawning many such applications concurrently on an HPC system leads to severe I/O contention. thus, understanding and subsequently reducing I/O contention induced by such multi-tenancy is critical for the efficient and reliable performance of the HPC system. In this study, we demonstrate that an application's performance is influenced by the command line arguments passed to the job submission. We model an application's I/O behavior based on two factors: past I/O behavior within a time window and user-configured I/O settings via command-line arguments. We conclude that I/O patterns for well-known HPC applications like E3SM and LAMMP are predictable, with an average uncertainty below 0.25 (A probability of 80%) and near zero (A probability of 100%) within a day. However, I/O pattern variance increases as the study time window lengthens. Additionally, we show that for 38 users and at least 50 applications constituting approximately 93000 job submissions, there is a high correlation between a submitted command line and the past command lines made within 1 to 10 days submitted by the user. In large-scale edge systems, along with the number of edge devices, the amount of data that needs to be processed has been increasing. Edge systems have limited processing power, memory, and network bandwidth. For such systems, handling resource utilization and data management during query processing is tricky. Moreover, joins being the costliest operations, when accelerated, can improve query processing substantially. the state-of-the-art technique for accelerating hash join, Column Imprint-Hash Join, is a data-aware approach which uses equi-height binning. Proposed Predicted Workload-Aware Column Imprint-Hash Join enhances the query performance and addresses real-time query processing by predicting the upcoming workload in advance. the algorithm is demonstrated on the TPC-H benchmark dataset. It shows an improvement of about 10% for the Percentage of Cachelines Read over CI-HJ, making the algorithm energy-efficient. An overall gain in Query Execution Time of 11% is observed. Although, Algorithm Execution Time shows an overhead of 6% as compared to the state-of-the-art which is due to an additional prediction phase. the proposed technique showcases the effectiveness of query prediction in optimizing edge system performance. © 2024 ACM.

Urban computing is an emerging computing paradigm for processing urban data to serve urban applications, which is an important manner to realize smart cities. To be specific, cloud computing and edge computing are usually leveraged to support urban computing. As a distributed and extended solution for cloud computing, edge computing is capable of providing better data services for IoT devices. However, edge computing resources are widely distributed and edge devices are highly mobile. To guarantee the QoS (Quality of Service), it is challenging to decide where to distribute the computing resources according to edge devices, especially around a specific urban area. therefore, it is essential to simulate and verify the solution through evaluation tools before practical deployment in urban scenarios. But urban computing is a relatively new paradigm, there are few evaluation tools for direct usage. To provide hints for useful tools, we perform a survey study on existing evaluation tools for edge computing, which can be somehow applied to urban computing. In this paper, we first classify and define the evaluation tools into three categories: simulators, emulators, and testbeds. then we perform a comprehensive study on the above three categories. Finally, we conclude the research challenges for urban computing based on current evaluation tools. © 2023 IEEE.

Edge computing pushes cloud capabilities to the edge of the network, closer to the users, to address stringent Quality-of-Service requirements and ensure more efficient bandwidth usage. Function-as-a-Service appears to be the most natural service model solution to enhance Edge computing applications' deployment and responsiveness. Unfortunately, the conventional FaaS model does not fit well in distributed and heterogeneous edge environments, where traffic demands arrive to (and are served by) edge nodes that may get overloaded under certain traffic conditions or where the access points of the network might frequently change, as for mobile applications. this short paper tries to fill this gap by proposing DFaaS, a novel decentralized FaaS-based architecture designed to autonomously balance the traffic load across edge nodes belonging to federated Edge computing ecosystems. DFaaS implementation relies on an overlay peer-to-peer network and a distributed control plane that takes decisions on load redistribution. Although preliminary, results confirm the feasibility of the approach, showing that the system can transparently redistribute the load across edge nodes when they become overloaded.

Cloud-Applications are the new industry standard way of designing Web-Applications. With Cloud computing, Applications are usually designed as microservices, and developers can take advantage of thousands of such existing microservices, involving several hundred of cross-component communications on different physical resources. Microservices orchestration (as Kubernetes) is an automatic process, which manages each component lifecycle, and notably their allocation on the different resources of the cloud infrastructure. Whereas such automatic cloud technologies ease development and deployment, they nevertheless obscure debugging and performance analysis. In order to gain insight on the composition of services, distributed tracing recently emerged as a way to get the decomposition of the activity of each component within a cloud infrastructure. this paper aims at providing methodologies and tools (leveraging state-of-the-art tracing) for getting a wider view of application behaviours, especially focusing on application performance assessment. In this paper, we focus on using distributed traces and allocation information from microservices to model their dependencies as a hierarchical property graph. By applying graph rewriting operations, we managed to project and filter communications observed between microservices at higher abstraction layers like the machine nodes, the zones or regions. Finally, in this paper we propose an implementation of the model running on a microservices shopping application deployed on a Zonal Kubernetes cluster monitored by Open Telemetry traces. We propose using the flow hierarchy metric on the graph model to pinpoint cycles that reveal inefficient resource composition inducing possible performance issues and economic waste.

Cloud computing serves as a cornerstone of modern IT infrastructure, delivering on-demand storage, computation, and networking resources. While various scheduling approaches have evolved to manage these resources, federated scheduling represents the latest advancement, addressing limitations of previous methods through a layered architecture with distributed scheduling nodes. this paper enhances the Megha scheduler by introducing a priority-based mechanism specifically optimized for latency-sensitive short-term jobs. We present four scheduling strategies-static allocation, repartitioning, dynamic allocation, and preemption-based scheduling-and evaluate their performance against the original Megha scheduler. Our simulation results demonstrate that the preemption-based approach delivers the most balanced performance improvement, reducing shortterm job latency by up to 99.9 percent while maintaining acceptable performance for long-term jobs. these findings highlight how priority-awareness in federated schedulers can dramatically improve responsiveness for time-sensitive applications without significantly compromising overall datacenter efficiency.

this paper deals with the problem of performance stability of software running in shared virtualized infrastructures. the focus is on the ability to build an abstract performance model of containerized application components, where real-time scheduling at the CPU level, along with traffic shaping at the networking level, are used to limit the temporal interferences among co-located workloads, so as to obtain a predictable distributed computing platform. A model for a simple client-server application running in containers is used as a case-study, where an extensive experimental validation of the model is conducted over a testbed running a modified OpenStack on top of a custom real-time CPU scheduler in the Linux kernel.
