Grid applications require a network to transport data between geographically distributed sites. the key characteristics of grid networks include adaptability, scalability, heterogeneity, the ability to span different administrative domains, and the support for various QoS levels. Our design objective is to support continuous large traffic flows between a set of known remote sites. We provision dedicated optical connections directly between end user premises. A solution is provided for end users to compose their virtual private networks by using network resources from different suppliers. Our network control mechanism is based on granting end users access to the management interfaces of network elements. End users can reconfigure the route and bandwidth of connections without carrier interventions. In this paper, we propose layered network management architecture for Grid optical networks. An overview of the design of a user-controlled lightpath provisioning system is presented

Traditional approaches to designing business processes are often inadequate for complicated, distributed, and collaborated settings. However since network technologies have become widespread, an increasing number of business processes exhibit these properties. therefore a new approach is needed. To this end, we describe the motivation, conceptualization, and analysis of a composition-oriented business process design method. the key advance of our method is that it uses process algebra pi-calculus as its formal basis and builds a complex process by composing simple structured process control modules to reduce the complexity of business process design as well as let several designers collaborate the design of a complex process. To make business process more clear, we also provide way of separating exception processing logic from normal process control logic and provide scooping mechanisms to minimize the detrimental effects of unplanned contingencies by ways of composition

this paper describes WOW, a distributed system that combines virtual machine, overlay networking and peer-to-peer techniques to create scalable wide-area networks of virtual workstations for high-throughput computing. the system is architected to: facilitate the addition of nodes to a pool of resources through the use of system virtual machines (VMs) and self-organizing virtual network links; to maintain IP connectivity even if VMs migrate across network domains; and to present to end-users and applications an environment that is functionally identical to a local-area network or cluster of workstations. We describe a novel, extensible user-level decentralized technique to discover, establish and maintain overlay links to tunnel IP packets over different transports (including UDP and TCP) and across firewalls. We also report on several experiments conducted on a testbed WOW deployment with 118 P2P router nodes over PlanetLab and 33 VMware-based VM nodes distributed across six firewalled domains. Experiments show that the latency in joining a WOW network is of the order of seconds: in a set of 300 trials, 90% of the nodes self-configured P2P routes within 10 seconds, and more than 99% established direct connections to other nodes within 200 seconds. Experiments also show that the testbed delivers good performance for two unmodified, representative benchmarks drawn from the life-sciences domain. the testbed WOW achieves an overall throughput of 53 jobs/minute for PBS-scheduled executions of the MEME application (with average single-job sequential running time of 24.1s) and a parallel speedup of 13.5 for the PVM-based fastDNAml application. Experiments also demonstrate that the system is capable of seamlessly maintaining connectivity at the virtual IP layer for typical client/server applications (NFS, SSH, PBS) when VMs migrate across a WAN

the purpose of delegation is improving resource share and realizing collaboration in CSCW environment. Nowadays agent-based collaboration in multi-agent system lacks of delegation model including formalization and relative mechanisms, especially for variable dynamic collaboration scene. Based on a new proposed concept agent collaboration scene (abbr. ACS), this paper specifies a dynamic agent-based capability delegation model supporting temporal characters and constraint rules, called by capability delegation model for multi-agent system (abbr. CDM for MAS), as well as representing hybrid architecture and key protocol functions related to delegation. the model solves the issue of agent's capability oneness and inflexibility, and realizes dynamic capabilities delegation between agents in an actual application agent-based text information retrieval system, enhancing agent cooperation efficiency and security

this work presents a hybrid peer-to-peer-based architecture for collaborative engineering design. Many current Internet-enabled environments for distributed engineering design have been proposed based on the centralized architecture. However, as complexity of design tasks increase, the centralized architecture has some potential drawbacks such as communicating bottlenecks and guarantee scalability. therefore, we propose a hybrid peer-to-peer (P2P) network model, and describe a CSCW architecture using multi-agent techniques. Treating an agent as a peer in this study, we also describe its structure, the interaction between design agents, and implementation of a prototype system. A case study on collaborative layout design of satellite modules illustrates the proposed architecture

this contribution aims at automating an increasingly complex and expensive task of real-time introspection and inspection of large-scale distributed systems like a mobile phone fleet by using state-of-art machine-learning, probabilistic reasoning and information-theoretic approaches. Achieving advanced device self-managing (ADsM) capabilities in end to end reconfigurable mobile phone systems and networks is a central goal of E 2 R2, which is considered an inevitable next step in the evolution of today's management tools like the open mobile alliance (OMA) device management (DM). this framework is so far predominantly targeted towards the update of already sold mobiles by the device manufacturer. Another main aspect is the provisioning of operator dependent settings. Given the incredible rapid growth in network-size, complexity and considering desired abilities like dynamic spectrum management for spectrum-trading, moving the management plane to a higher abstraction layer is essential to keep track. this paper focuses on the enabling peer to peer (P2P) routing and collaborating basis as a common knowledge foundation

Although genetic services have potential value for health care and disease control, there is no systematic solution for knowledge capture in Medical Genetic Testing (MGT) Laboratories. this paper addresses such knowledge management (KM) technology weakness in genetics domain, then proposes an information system (IS) architecture to establish process automation and content management of the distributed workflow of knowledge generation and knowledge management (KG&KM) during MGT result interpretation. the presented IS will validate the interpretation decision by using information systems/information technologies (IS/IT), esp. KM tools, such as workflow management system (WfMS), search engine and groupware. Once developed and implemented, our integrated system will significantly improve MGT lab researchers' KG&KM performance through increasing knowledge capture, improving documentation quality and maintaining (if not improving) users' information satisfaction

Broadcast is an essential part of ad hoc network routing protocols. An efficient broadcast algorithm can greatly reduce the number of retransmissions in a network, thus decreasing the number of packet collisions and overall power consumption. In this paper, we propose the gateway multipoint relays (GMPR) broadcast algorithm, which combines the multipoint relay (MPR) and the maximal independent set (MIS) concepts to calculate a connected dominating set (CDS) in the network. Our algorithm, which is fully localized and distributed, can significantly reduce the redundant broadcasting in the network while keeping the cost of computation low. the GMPR constructs a CDS in two phases. In the first phase, an MIS is established where nodes in the MIS are referred to as dominators, and they form the gateways in the network. In the second phase, each gateway generates some connectors to connect other gateways based on the original MPR algorithm. then, a self-pruning procedure is applied to each gateway to eliminate redundant gateways after the CDS construction. In this paper, we show that our algorithm has O(Delta 2 ) time complexity and O(n) message complexity, where Delta is the maximum node degree and n is the total number of nodes in the network. Simulation is conducted to compare our new algorithm with two leading MPR-based CDS broadcast algorithms. the results show that our algorithm performs better than those algorithms in terms of the size of the generated CDS

Rapid growth and spread of information technology especially network technology enables people to use computers more naturally and easily and as a result, more design data and information leave in designers' desktops. Recent advances in grid, semantic Web, P2P and Web services have revolutionized the way we communicate and collaborate and also make it possible to integrate desktop data. Undertaking the intersection fulfillment of these technologies on enterprise desktop enables new integrative and collaborative use of not only organizational data but also distributed, autonomous personal data on the Web by fully leveraging potentially useful information sources on many desktops. In this context, we introduce SDDG (semantic desktop data grid) a P2P-semantic-grid enabled information sharing infrastructure for entire enterprise information, which wraps both organizational and personal information sources as semantic grid services and creates a semantic information interoperability environment following a P2P data coordination way. through a discussion of fundamental scientific positions in general and approaches to information integration research in particular, a three-tier hybrid framework is presented and discussed in detail. the architecture for SDDG is an extension of our previous work ESD by reflecting principles of P2P data integration in semantic grid

Peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures make each network node capable of being both a client and a server. Such a network is potentially powerful for developing large-scale distributed information sharing. this paper presents our recent research work on the P2P hybrid information retrieval based on ant colony algorithm (ACA). From various perspectives, our work focuses on how to improve retrieval efficiency in a P2P file-sharing network. A new model is proposed to implement P2P information retrieval. In order to evaluate and validate the model, we built a simulated P2P application consist of a network of peer nodes; mobile agent travel through the network, making peer nodes communicate with each other. the results show some advantages of the proposed approach for the P2P retrieval based on ant colony algorithm using information recommendation services
