Recently, Web-based contents distribution services have become more important in mobile communications, including the telematics field. In current Web-based systems, a thin client-server model is a mainstream in which application processes are centralized and executed at servers. However, as the volume of data increases and higher quality of service is demanded, it becomes a significant problem how to provide such services from servers to users through wireless links which are not always available. In order to resolve the problem for contents distribution services to mobiles, a thick client-server model, in which processes are distributed and executed at clients, is considered to be effective. We propose and discuss a Web-based thick client-server model applicable to telematics services. A mechanism for a data distribution and management system is described, which is necessary for Web-based content distribution. An experimental platform is built, and the proposed mechanism is implemented and evaluated on it. According to experimental results, the proposed method, in which meta data is separated from content data and transferred to clients through different routes, achieves sufficient performance for these services.

We propose a general mobility model based on region splitting and mapping each subregion on a multi-server node. By using the theory of multi-class Jackson queueing network with multiserver nodes and employing the product-form solution for such queueing networks, we obtain an analytical form for the spatial traffic distribution in a typical region with specific number of users. To this end, we consider the spatial statistical pattern for new and handoff call arrivals and the ratio between these two types of arrivals. At last, we apply our new model to some simple mobility scenarios and compute the resultant active user's location densities.

In practical time-frequency (T-F) analysis of nonstationary signals associated with the use of the smooth pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (SPWV), an important issue is a choice of the smoothing window. To address this problem, a fast sub-optimal technique is proposed, relating the window length to the approximate slope of the frequency modulation. the results obtained by using this automated procedure are comparable to results given by supervised decompositions and are more (locally) adapted. the developed method has been used in processing of radar returns. In order to objectively assess the performance of the transforms, several measures can be used. For signals with unknown modulation laws, cost functions are available, including measures based on entropy function. their application to evaluation of the obtained T-F distributions is demonstrated.

Scaleable and fault tolerant architectures that protect communication flows through diverse paths have a fundamental problem to solve. Especially in distributed systems - like the Internet - it is not trivial to find necessary vertex-and edge disjoint paths. this paper presents a new distributed service discovery architecture that can solve this problem. the key idea of our approach is, to route the traffic on the alternate path - in an overlay network - through a single autonomous system that is not part of the original data path. We show that, if this autonomous system is selected in an "intelligent" way, most of the hops of the original data path can be bypassed by this diverse path. Our approach builds on a new 2-tier peer to peer (P2P) signalling architecture. the lower tier consist of several P2P networks that are each limited to the boundaries of single autonomous systems. the higher tier in our architecture connects selected peers from different autonomous systems. Based on this flat hierarchy, our service discovery architecture is scaleable and due to the P2P nature, inherently fault tolerant.

Vulnerabilities and attacks on the ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol are investigated and studied via analysis and simulation. the attacks are classified by their target properties. the analysis shows that the on-demand route query enables the malicious host to conduct real time attacks on AODV. False distance vector and false destination sequence attacks are studied by simulation. Two connection scenarios are considered: common destination and uniformly distributed traffic load. the delivery ratio, attack overhead, and the propagation of false routes are measured by varying the number of connections and the mobility of the hosts. the simulation results illustrate that the attacker can confuse the network connectivity with false routes and lead to a decrease in the delivery ratio of up to 75%. When the hosts are uniformly distributed, the false distance vector attacks cannot cheat more than half of the hosts, but the false destination sequence routes can propagate to most of the network. the anomaly patterns of sequence numbers carried by routing request (RREQ) can be applied to detect the false destination sequence attacks. the vulnerability analysis results and anomaly patterns can be employed by other ad hoc routing protocols to establish intrusion prevention and detection mechanisms.

Software requirements often change during the operational lifetime of deployed systems. To accommodate requirements not conceived during design time, the system must be able to adapt its functionality and behavior. the paper examines a formal model for reconfigurable software processes that permits adaptive fault tolerance by adding or removing specific fault tolerance techniques during runtime. A distributed software-implemented fault tolerance (SIFT) environment for managing user applications has been implemented using ARMOR processes that conform to the formal model of reconfigurability. Because ARMOR processes are reconfigurable, they can tailor the fault tolerance services that they provide to themselves and to the user applications. We describe two fault tolerance techniques: microcheckpointing and assertion checking, that have been incorporated into ARMOR process via reconfigurations to the original ARMOR design. Experimental evaluations of the SIFT environment on a testbed cluster at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory demonstrate the effectiveness of these two fault tolerance techniques in limiting data error propagation among the ARMOR processes. these experiments validate the concept of using an underlying reconfigurable process architecture as the basis for implementing replaceable error detection and recovery services.

Mobile ad hoc network consists of freely moving nodes communicating with each other through wireless links. In this paper, we propose a load balancing algorithm for these networks with nodes having different processing powers and thus can perform extensive computations apart from forwarding packets for other nodes. these nodes will also have various degrees of battery powers as well. Due to the heterogeneity of the systems in terms of processing and battery powers, naturally, there will be load imbalance. If the workload is distributed among the nodes in the system based on the resources of individual nodes, the average execution time can be minimized and the lifetime of the nodes can be maximized. Our proposed load balancing algorithm takes into consideration several realistic parameters such as processing and batter powers of each node, and communication cost for the loads being transferred between the overloaded and underloaded nodes. Simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves performance improvements in terms of processor utilization, execution time, and balance factor.

Ad-hoc networks are a new wireless networking paradigm for mobile hosts. Unlike conventional wireless networks, ad-hoc networks have no fixed network infrastructure or administrative support. the topology of the network changes dynamically as mobile nodes join or depart the network or radio links between nodes become unusable. In this paper we propose some efficient multi-path approaches that provide more secure routing schemes for ad-hoc network than previous ones. Within these approaches, more than one routing paths are selected. With the underlying coding technique, it can guarantee security against some malicious parties(it depends on how robust system is.) Moreover, we apply these schemes into existing ad-hoc network routing protocols, table-driven and on-demand routing algorithms. Finally, we derive the relation between some probabilities on our algorithms.

this paper presents Q-fabric, which is a set of lightweight, kernel-level abstractions for cooperative, distributed resource management and system/application adaptation. the basis of Q-fabric is its kernel-level, anonymous, asynchronous event service. With this mechanism, (1) applications can monitor and manage the local and remote resources they are using, (2) system-level resource managers can customize their actions to meet the needs of individual applications, and (3) policies can be developed that combine application adaptation with distributed resource management. Results presented in this paper demonstrate the Q-fabric's ability to effectively adapt and manage the resources of a distributed multimedia application. In this application, media streams are adapted at application-level via data down-sampling, and their resources are managed at system-level (e.g., task scheduling) to cope with run-time variations in resource availability. the Q-fabric is implemented as kernel modules on standard Linux platforms.
