In distributed virtual environments (DVEs), maintaining a consistent view of the virtual world among all users is a primary task. Due to the resource limitations such as network capacity and computational power, the consistency of the virtual world cannot be guaranteed sometimes. In this paper, we try to address this problem in client-server-based DVEs by considering server side network capacity limitation. We look at the position update packets from client to server and show the impact of packet loss due to server side network capacity limitation on the consistency of the virtual world. We assume clients use Dead Reckoning (DR) models to control position updates. In order to adapt client updates with the server side network capacity to avoid update packet loss, two server assistant DR threshold tuning policies for different updating schemas are proposed in this paper. the proposed tuning polices are validated to have good performance by simulation results. © 2010 IEEE.

this paper analyze the parallel computing environment overhead of OpenMP for loop with multi-core processors including the case of data-race. the different solutions of data-race are discussed in present paper, such as critical pragma, atomic pragma and reduction clause. A new method is also presented in this paper which produces the least parallel environment overhead compared with other methods and the codes are presented too. the conclusions and discussions are beneficial to save computing time and improve the computational efficiency. © 2010 IEEE.

With the increasing functionality and complexity of distributed systems, resource failures are inevitable. While numerous models and algorithms for dealing with failures exist, the lack of public trace data sets and tools has prevented meaningful comparisons. To facilitate the design, validation, and comparison of fault-tolerant models and algorithms, we have created the Failure Trace Archive (FTA) as an online public repository of availability traces taken from diverse parallel and distributed systems. Our main contributions in this study are the following. First, we describe the design of the archive, in particular the rationale of the standard FTA format, and the design of a toolbox that facilitates automated analysis of trace data sets. Second, applying the toolbox, we present a uniform comparative analysis with statistics and models of failures in nine distributed systems. third, we show how different interpretations of these data sets can result in different conclusions. this emphasizes the critical need for the public availability of trace data and methods for their analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

Demands for efficient and effective utilization of computing resources have derived distributed computing systems of the large scaled such as Grid for scientific computing and Cloud for utility computing. In these distributed computing systems the total capacity of consolidated storages should expand as the amount of user data grows. the user's data are necessarily kept in the distributed computing system such as the Grid and the Cloud, which some users don't allow the system to. In this work, an auxiliary storage subsystem is proposed to provide external storages to the distributed computing system. the storage subsystem lets the iSCSI devices be connected to the distributed computing system as needed. As iSCSI is a recent, standard, and widely deployed protocol for storage networking, the subsystem is able to accommodate many types of storages outside of the distributed computing system. the proposed subsystem could transmit data by streams attaining high bit rate of the network capacity in the experiment.

the energy consumption issue in distributed computing systems has become quite critical due to environmental concerns. In response to this, many energy-aware scheduling algorithms have been developed primarily by using the dynamic voltage-frequency scaling (DVFS) capability incorporated in recent commodity processors. the majority of these algorithms involve two passes: schedule generation and slack reclamation. the latter is typically achieved by lowering processor frequency for tasks with slacks. In this paper, we revisit this energy reduction technique from a different perspective and propose a new slack reclamation algorithm which uses a linear combination of the maximum and minimum processor frequencies to decrease energy consumption. this algorithm has been evaluated based on results obtained from experiments with three different sets of task graphs: 1,500 randomly generated task graphs, and 300 task graphs of each of two real-world applications (Gauss-Jordan and LU decomposition). the results show that the amount of energy saved in the proposed algorithm is 13.5%, 25.5% and 0.11% for random, LU decomposition and Gauss-Jordan task graphs, respectively;these percentages for the reference DVFS-based algorithm are 12.4%, 24.6% and 0.1%, respectively. © 2010 IEEE.

this paper introduces the newly developed Infini-Band (IB) Management Queue capability, used by the Host Channel Adapter (HCA) to manage network task data flow dependancies, and progress the communications associated with such flows. these tasks include sends, receives, and the newly supported wait task, and are scheduled by the HCA based on a data dependency description provided by the user. this functionality is supported by the ConnectX-2 HCA, and provides the means for delegating collective communication management and progress to the HCA, also known as collective communication offload. this provides a means for overlapping collective communications managed by the HCA and computation on the Central Processing Unit (CPU), thus making it possible to reduce the impact of system noise on parallel applications using collective operations. this paper further describes how this new capability can be used to implement scalable Message Passing Interface (MPI) collective operations, describing the high level details of how this new capability is used to implement the MPI Barrier collective operation, focusing on the latency sensitive performance aspects of this new capability. this paper concludes with small scale benchmark experiments comparing implementations of the barrier collective operation, using the new network offload capabilities, with established point-to-point based implementations of these same algorithms, which manage the data flow using the central processing unit. these early results demonstrate the promise this new capability provides to improve the scalability of high-performance applications using collective communications. the latency of the HCA based implementation of the barrier is similar to that of the best performing point-to-point based implementation managed by the central processing unit, starting to outperform these as the number of processes involved in the collective operation increases. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a software testing environment, called D-Cloud, using cloud computing technology and virtual machines with fault injection facility. Nevertheless, the importance of high dependability in a software system has recently increased, and exhaustive testing of software systems is becoming expensive and time-consuming, and, in many cases, sufficient software testing is not possible. In particular, it is often difficult to test parallel and distributed systems in the real world after deployment, although reliable systems, such as high-availability servers, are parallel and distributed systems. D-Cloud is a cloud system which manages virtual machines with fault injection facility. D-Cloud sets up a test environment on the cloud resources using a given system configuration file and executes several tests automatically according to a given scenario. In this scenario, D-Cloud enables fault tolerance testing by causing device faults by virtual machine. We have designed the D-Cloud system using Eucalyptus software and a description language for system configuration and the scenario of fault injection written in XML. We found that the D-Cloud system, which allows a user to easily set up and test a distributed system on the cloud and effectively reduces the cost and time of testing. © 2010 IEEE.

the data explosion in many applications requires efficient data mining solutions. Fortunately, emerging technologies like grid and cloud computing, high-performance multi-core processors and graphics processing units provide the potential to keep pace with the data explosion and open up new opportunities for designing efficient algorithms. In this paper, we propose a parallel variant of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm suitable for clustering large data sets in a distributed environment. the conventional EM algorithm sequentially iterates two phases: In the E-step, points are assigned to the clusters and in the M-step the cluster models are updated. the basic idea of our approach is allowing asynchronous model updates for faster convergence and best usage of the available resources. the frequency of the updates can be flexibly adjusted to the specific characteristics of the environment including communication costs and computing power of the single devices. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the benefits of our approach. © 2010 IEEE.
