Terascale astronomical datasets have the potential to provide unprecedented insights into the origins of our universe. However, automated techniques for determining regions of interest are a must if domain experts are to cope with the intractable amounts of simulation data. this paper addresses the important problem of locating and tracking high density regions in space that generally correspond to halos and sub-halos and host galaxies. A density based, mode following clustering method called Automated Hierarchical Density Shaving (Auto-HDS) is adapted for this application. Auto-HDS can detect clusters of different densities while discarding the vast majority of background data. Two alternative parallel implementations of the algorithm, based respectively on the dataflow computational model and on Hadoop/ MapReduce functional programming constructs, are realized and compared. Based on runtime performance, scalability across compute cores and across increasing data volumes, we demonstrate the benefits of fine grain parallelism. the proposed distributed and multithreaded AutoHDS clustering algorithm is shown to produce high quality clusters, be computationally efficient, and scalable from 1 through 1024 compute-cores. © 2010 IEEE.

the diversity of job characteristics such as unstructured/unorganized arrival of jobs and priorities, could lead to inefficient resource allocation. therefore, the characterization of jobs is an important aspect worthy of investigation, which enables judicious resource allocation decisions achieving two goals (performance and utilization) and improves resource availability.

Summary form only given. the growing number of announced commercial and scientific clouds strongly suggests that in the near future these providers will be differentiated according to the types of their services, their cost, availability and quality. Users will be able to use these and other criteria to determine which clouds best suit their needs, a plausible scenario being the case when users need to aggregate capabilities provided by different clouds. In such scenarios it will be essential to provide virtual networking technologies that enable providers to support cross-cloud communication and users to deploy cross-cloud applications. this talk will describe one such technology, its salient features and remaining challenges. It will also put forward the idea of virtual clouds, i.e. providers of computing services overlaid on more than one cloud. A virtual cloud spans across multiple cloud providers and presents the view of a single logical cloud. Virtual clouds would enable high-level computing services to be provided by third parties who do not own physical resources, could be short or long-lived and highly dynamic. Enabling technologies, challenges and examples of sky computing will be presented.

Networked applications structured as a collection of interconnected services offer high flexibility. In this context, services arc functional parts that receive and send messages in a distributed environment. this structure is especially interesting for multimedia/video applications due to their natural mapping to a graph-based structure. In this paper, a component model for the implementation of services is provided. the goal is to obtain services developed with a homogeneous structure to case interoperability. the proposed component model (named iLaSer) defines the interfaces with other services in a way that both, data and quality of service (QoS) information is given for each service. Target applications are distributed environments where QoS Information is relevant to allow managing the execution of services in compliance with functional and non-functional requirements. this work is carried out in the context of the iLAND project where the communication middleware performs QoS-based service composition in a time-deterministic manner. Io show the feasibility of the approach, experimental results are provided with the implementation of a video application based on services that follow the proposed component model.

In this paper we explore the capability and flexibility of FPGA solutions in a sense to accelerate scientific computing applications which require very high precision arithmetic, based on 128-bit or even 256-bit floating-point number representation. this paper addresses the accuracy when performing LU decomposition on large-scale matrices. In future ExaScale computing environments, accuracy errors are expected to increase up to a level which leaves only 11 significant bits in the mantissa. this is caused by the required large amount of accumulation operations which are in the order of O(n 3). Using exact long fixed-point numbers instead of usual floatingpoint numbers in the accumulation process, leads to exact accumulation results with only one bit error, originated by the rounding in the last normalization step. We have developed two types of High Precision Multiplication and Accumulation (HP-MAC), for Double-Double (128 bits) and Quad-Double (256 bits) floating-point, respectively, and implemented them into FPGA devices. We propose a two-level RAM banks scheme to store and add long fixed-point numbers with minimized crucial data paths lengths. We also introduce a scheme of partial summation to enhance the pipeline throughput of MAC operations, by dividing the summation function into 4 partial operations, processed in 4 banks. To prove the concept, we prototyped six 128-bit HP-MAC units into a Xilinx Virtex-5 XC5VLX330 FPGA chip and performed LU decomposition. the experimental results show accuracy improvement of 10 to 24 bits, compared to a software approach with similar precision arithmetic. Moreover, our LU decomposition implementation, based on FPGA running at 133MHz, achieves 29X - 56X better performance and much lower power consumption compared to the use of a software-based library running on an Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 CPU at 2.33GHz. © 2010 ACM.

distributed applications in a heterogeneous environment (heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks, heterogenous middlewares and operating systems, etc.) require facilities for context adaptation especially when mobile users are collaborating through this environment. In this work the context adaptation is considered as a set of rules on the following parameters: connectivity, user availability and user location. these rules anticipate the changes that may occur on the environment parameters in order to provide an adaptable service. A decision tree-based approach is used to help extracting generalized rules from a variety of contextual information. A collaborative mobile telediagnosis application illustrates the suggested approach and its implementation.

A system is reconfigurable when it can modify its behavior or its architecture at runtime. the constant growth of the complexity in embedded systems, the variation of execution environment constraints and the evolution of user requirements make the reconfiguration more important and more difficult to achieve. the challenges concern as much the design model level as the runtime support level. these area involve widely diverse core expertise ranging from formal methods, system architecture, hardware design and software engineering. However, there is still a gap between levels involved in the development of these systems. this observation yield the following: we present the state of the art for the modeling and development of these systems through four classes of tools: component-based software engineering, technologies used to specify and configure embedded systems, frameworks and development processes.

Easing software developers' task is a promising target, enabling to reduce software costs and development time. this is more interesting when the generated code of the application is efficient. this paper proposes eC3M (embedded Component Container Connector Model/Middleware); a methodology for the development of distributed applications, executing in embedded platforms with limited resources. We present the software development life cycle supported by eC3M and compare it with the ones of other tools, such as MyCCM-HI and SOFA-HI. the outcome of our efforts is a footprint provided by eC3M-generated code that fits the requirements of embedded distributed software systems.

In Multi-Agent Systems (MAS), Organizations are means to structure cooperation and collaboration between agents. MoiseInst is a normative Organization model giving the possibility to constraint agents behavior according to four dimensions (structural, functional, contextual and normative). Mabeli as Electronic Institution model allows the supervision of MoiseInst Organizations compliance through an arbitration system. the difficulty is to easily instantiate such Organizations to obtain a dynamic entity in which agents can evolve. In this paper we introduce Utopia, our Institution-oriented and Institution-based programming framework. Utopia permits to easily and automatically set up a MAS thanks to a XML MoiseInst Specification file. the framework convert this file into an innovative mathematical structure namely a recursive graph. We show a concrete application of the prototype through RED, an EUREKA/CELTIC European project use-case.

An embedded software system is reconfigurable when it can modify its behavior or its architecture. the reconfigurations are launched according to the evolution of context requirements and the variation of execution environment constraints. the constant growth of the complexity in embedded systems makes the reconfiguration more important and more difficult to achieve. the challenges concern as much the design model level as the runtime support level. Here we focus our attention on design model level. In our work, we aim at providing an automated development process from model to implementation for the dynamic software part of these systems. the contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we use the notion of structure to capture configurations instead of defining each of them. Second, we propose a set of tools to be used in a model driven approach to specify and configure reconfigurable software architectures of distributed real time embedded (DRE) systems.
