the performance of parallel programs can be largely affected by the latency of remote memory references. the notion of affinity has been used extensively for scheduling programmer defined threads to reduce remote communication costs. the most popular approach has been to schedule the thread as close to the data as possible. Most of the existing techniques expect the programmer to annotate affinity related information used by the scheduler. In this paper, we propose a framework that qualifies and quantifies various possible affinities playing a role in memory access latency in a system comprising of threads, processor nodes and data objects. We propose a technique based on cost functions to arrive at affinity information that can be used for reducing latencies. the affinity information thus obtained can be used in a number of ways such as: (1) transform the user program automatically (i.e., oblivious to the programmer);(2) highlight the user code in the integrated development toolkit used by the programmer;and (3) provide annotations that can be understood by the scheduler in making dynamic decisions of allocating objects and assigning threads to nodes. We support our framework and algorithm withthe case studies/experiments done so far.

Nowadays XML-based data integration systems are accepted as data service providers on the web. In order to make such a data integration system fully equipped with data manipulation capabilities, programming frameworks which support update at the integration level are being developed. When the user is permitted to submit updates, it is necessary to establish the best possible data consistency in the whole data integration system. To that extend, we present an approach based on an XQuery trigger service. We define an XQuery trigger model together with its semantics. We report on the integration of the XQuery trigger service into the overall architecture and discuss details of the execution model. Experiments show that data consistency is enforced easily, efficiently and conveniently at the global level. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Communication-driven coscheduling (CDC) has been demonstrated to be an effective technique to enhance the performance of parallelapplications in multi-programmed clusters. However, existing CDC schemes do not incorporate any steps to adequately deal with priority boost conflicts, leading to significantly degraded performance. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a flexible CDC scheme that regulates the scheduling sequence of conflicting processes based on the rescheduling latency of their correspondents in remote nodes. We also demonstrate the implementation details of the proposed scheme built on top of an unified coscheduling framework which can be used to implement any coscheduling schemes with minimal effort. Using this framework, we exhaustively explore the impact of various system parameters and/or job characteristics on the performance of all considered CDC schemes on a heterogeneous cluster testbed. the results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing schemes (by up to 36.6% in average job response time), reducing both boost conflict ratio and message delay.

In the context of a publicly funded cooperative project aimed at the assessment of potential risks related to nanoparticles, a general-purpose system for documenting the laboratory assays is presented. the system is designed to enable users distributed over various organizations to jointly document their activities, yielding a data base that allows for the reproducibility of the entire lifecyle of any given specimen. As requirements and activities are constantly evolving, the concept is focused on a flexible approach where new activity types can be added and configured at runtime.

the risk management in a distributed sensor network charged to put environmental variables under control is receiving great attention in recent years. We propose a framework that considers an high level model together with a distributed system based on adaptive agents able to handle the complete risk lifecycle at various levels of responsibility. the paper first describes the risk modeling problem in a distributed sensor network, then introduces three fundamental agent types: the risk monitoring, the local monitoring and the global monitoring, used to build a network that supports risk management in a distributed environment. then, the adaptive management of risk exposure is described in terms of a decision process based on a tight cooperation among Local Monitoring Agents. the framework is general enough to be applied in several appication domain.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks have been used efficiently as building blocks for large-scale distributed network applications in wired networks. On the other hand, with large Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANeTs) becoming even more realistic, it is pertinent to build those distributed network applications in MANeTs as well. In this paper, we provide analytical results for performance measures of these underlying MANeTs using finite buffer open queuing networks (FBOQNs) with gated queuing nodes, intermittent links and servers. the results are verified by simulation.

In today's society, individuals and organizations are faced with an ever growing load and diversity of textual information and content, and with increasing demands for knowledge and skills. In this work we try to answer part of these challenges by addressing text classification problems, essential to managing knowledge, by combining several different pioneer kernel-learning machines, namely Support Vector Machines and Relevance Vector Machines. To excel complex learning procedures we establish a model of high-performance distributedcomputing environment to help tackling the tasks involved in the text classification problem. the presented approach is valuable in many practical situations where text classification is used. Reuters-21578 benchmark data set is used to demonstrate the strength of the proposed system while different ensemble based learning machines provide text classification models that are efficiently deployed in the Condor and Alchemi platforms.
