In this paper, we will present an effective improved parallel hybrid asynchronous preconditioned GMRES method implemented on a nation wide grid environment. the classic restarted GMRES method is used widely to solve the large sparse linear systems. In order to accelerate the convergence, we use Arnoldi method to compute Ritz elements in parallel to optimize the computation of a polynomial. these two methods are asynchronously interconnected and we distributed them on a large nation wide cluster of clusters. From the numeric results for solving the real and complex system, we will present the performance of this hybrid method on such nation wide grids.

Clusters built from single-core systems are cost-effective as for the performance improvement and availability. However, the hardware constraints put limitations on the performance of single-core systems. Hence, it is difficult to meet with the increasing high performance requirements of diversified applications at different levels for general purpose computing. A promising feasible solution is the novice multi-core systems which extend the parallelism to CPU level by integrating multiple processing units on a single die. this paper uses finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm as a case study, designing suitable parallel FDTD algorithms for three architectures: distributed-memory machines with single-core processors, shared-memory machines with dual-core processors, and the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.) processor with nine heterogeneous cores. the experiment results show that the Cell/B.E. processor using 8 SPEs achieves a significant speedups of 7.05 faster than AMD single-core Opteron processor and 3.37 than AMD dual-core Opeteron processor at the processor level.

We propose to apply the ultra fast Time Of Flight technique (TOF) developed for High Energy Physics (HEP) particle detectors to biomedical imaging. the similarity of the problem in the two fields as well as the remarkable opportunities in biomedical imaging to use technologies developed in HEP have the potential to make major advances in the medical world, in particular for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). We will describe and present some preliminary results of the development of a new complete read-out chain able to manage signals from various types of modem photo detectors (MCP, APD, SiPM). this innovative architecture is made of a fast front-end electronics ASIC with novel Digital Signal Processing (DSP) concepts able to reach the Pico-second timing resolution, a time-to-digital converter, a pipelined digital readout and an integrated trigger/filter with real-time data treatment and display. In parallel with the hardware development, we have begun a systematic program to simulate system characteristics from the initial particle interaction to the final digital data, including a bit-by-bit mapping of the front end/data acquisition system. the introduction of these techniques and tools, common in HEP, has the potential to make improvement to biomedical imaging systems.

this keynote paper: presents a 21 st century vision of computing; identifies various computing paradigms promising to deliver the vision of computing utilities; defines Cloud computing and provides the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds by leveraging technologies such as VMs; provides thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain SLA-oriented resource allocation; presents some representative Cloud platforms especially those developed in industries along with our current work towards realising market-oriented resource allocation of Clouds by leveraging the 3rd generation Aneka enterprise Grid technology; reveals our early thoughts on interconnecting Clouds for dynamically creating an atmospheric computing environment along with pointers to future community research; and concludes with the need for convergence of competing IT paradigms for delivering our 21 st century vision.

Application-level checkpointing is a promising technology in the domain of large-scale scientific computing. the consistency of global checkpoint must be carefully guaranteed in order to correctly restore the computation. Usually, some complex coordinated protocols are employed to ensure the consistency of global checkpoint, which require logging orphan or in-transit messages during checkpointing. these protocols complicate the recovery of the computation and increase the checkpoint overhead due to logging message. In this paper, a new method which ensures the consistency of global checkpoint by static analysis is proposed. the method identifies the safe checkpointing regions in MPI programs, where the global checkpoint is always strongly consistent. All checkpoints are located in those safe checkpoint regions. During checkpointing, the method will not log any messages and introduce no extra overhead. the method was implemented and integrated into ALEC, which is a source-to-source precompiler for automating application-level checkpointing. the experimental results show that our method is effective.

Grid computing, one of the latest buzzwords in the ICT industry, is emerging as a new paradigm for Internet-based parallel and distributing computing. Despite a number of advances in grid computing, resource management and application scheduling in such environments continues to be a challenging and complex undertaking. this is due to geographic distribution of grid resources owned by different organizations with different usage policies, cost models and varying load and availability patterns with time. this tutorial introduces fundamental principles of grid computing and computational economy and discusses how they impact on emerging computational and data grid technologies. It identifies resource management challenges and introduces new challenges and requirements introduced by the grid economy on grid service providers (GSPs) and grid service consumers. the tutorial presents a service-oriented grid architecture inspired by computational economies and demonstrates how it can be realized by leveraging the existing grid technologies and building new economic-oriented capabilities and components. We present solutions to these challenges based on our experience in designing and developing market-oriented Gridbus technologies such as Grid Market Directory, Grid Bank, Grid Service Broker, Workflow Engine, and SLA-based enterprise Grid Resource Allocation system. Case studies on the use of Gridbus middleware in the creation of various e-science and e-business applications and their deployment on national/international utility-oriented grids along with its impact on emerging cloud computing paradigm will also be highlighted.

One of the basic problems related to the efficient application-level checkpointing is the placement of checkpoints in the source codes. In this paper we discuss two common questions with a source-to-source precompiler ALEC: 1) if there are N checkpoints in the application's source code, how to pick M checkpoints out of them minimizing the total amount of checkpoint data? 2) if there are no checkpoint in the application's source code, how to insert a set of checkpoints minimizing the amount of checkpoint data? We reveal that these two questions can both be abstracted as a mathematic model which is similar to the 0-1 integer programming model, and the model can be solved using implicit enumeration method. the solving methods proposed in the paper have been implemented and integrated into ALEC. Experimental results show that the method is efficient.

Currently, several ways for detecting heart disease are employed and ECG (Electrocardiogram) signal study is one of the typical solutions. the other method such as MCG (Magnetocardiogram) has been researched for heart disease detection. However, ECG and MCG have their own feeble points and also limitations in system performance according to the increase of data in quantity. thus, in order for improvement of ECG and MCG diagnosis methods, we propose an integrated-diagnosis system applying grid technologies which is termed as a Physio-Grid system. We conduct the experimental and evaluate proposed system to show improvements in diagnosis and system performance. the results indicate that the proposed physio-Grid system provides the reasonable medical services and also it guarantees high system performance in data management and high capability in diagnosis.

the performance of parallel programs can be largely affected by the latency of remote memory references. the notion of affinity has been used extensively for scheduling programmer defined threads to reduce remote communication costs. the most popular approach has been to schedule the thread as close to the data as possible. Most of the existing techniques expect the programmer to annotate affinity related information used by the scheduler. In this paper, we propose a framework that qualifies and quantifies various possible affinities playing a role in memory access latency in a system comprising of threads, processor nodes and data objects. We propose a technique based on cost functions to arrive at affinity information that can be used for reducing latencies. the affinity information thus obtained can be used in a number of ways such as: (1) transform the user program automatically (i.e., oblivious to the programmer); (2) highlight the user code in the integrated development toolkit used by the programmer; and (3) provide annotations that can be understood by the scheduler in making dynamic decisions of allocating objects and assigning threads to nodes. We support our framework and algorithm with the case studies/experiments done so far.

Transactional memory (TM) is receiving attention as a way of expressing parallelism for programming multi-core systems. As a parallel programming model it is able to avoid the complexity of conventional locking. TM can enable multi-core hardware that dispenses with conventional bus-based cache coherence, resulting in simpler and more extensible systems. this is increasingly important as we move into the many-core era. Within TM, however, the processes of conflict detection and committing still require synchronization and the broadcast of data. By increasing the granularity of when synchronization is required, the demands on communication are reduced. Software implementations of TM have taken advantage of the fact that the object structure of data can be employed to further raise the level at which interference is observed. the contribution of this paper is the first hardware TM approach where the object structure is recognized and harnessed. this leads to novel commit and conflict detection mechanisms, and also to an elegant solution to the virtualization of version management, without the need for additional software TM support. A first implementation of the proposed hardware TM system is simulated. the initial evaluation is conducted with three benchmarks derived from the STAMP suite and a transactional version of Lee's routing algorithm.
