Electron tomography is a powerful too] for deriving three-dimensional (3D) structural information about biological systems within the spatial scale spanning 1 nm(3) and 10 mm(3). With this technique, it is possible to derive detailed models of sub-cellular components such as organelles and synaptic complexes and to resolve the 3D distribution of their protein constituents in situ. Due in part to exponentially growing raw data-sizes, there continues to be a need for the increased integration of High-Performance computing (HPC) and Grid technologies with traditional electron tomography processes to provide faster data processing throughput. this is increasingly relevant because emerging mathematical algorithms that provide better data fidelity are more computationally intensive for larger raw data sizes. Progress has been made towards the transparent use of HPC and Grid tools for launching scientific applications without passing on the necessary administrative overhead and complexity (resource administration, authentication, scheduling, data delivery) to the non-computer scientist end-user. there is still a need, however, to simplify the use of these tools for applications developers who are developing novel algorithms for computation. Here we describe the architecture of the Telescience Project (http://***), specifically the use of layered workflow technologies to parallelize and execute scientific codes across a distributed and heterogeneous computational resource pool (including resources from the TeraGrid and OptIPuter projects) without the need for the application developer to understand the intricacies of the Grid.

this paper discusses a novel implementation of a workflow engine that supports service-based applications. the applications are defined according to the GAT model, which is an event-based programming model using conditional guards to determine when both normal and exception-handling activities are to be executed. We propose implementation techniques for key features of GAT. these include implementing control flow based on the evaluation of guards, the management and distribution of events, and enforcing atomicity across the evaluation of guards and the execution of the corresponding activities. We have built an engine following this approach which uses available technologies to support translating GAT models into executable applications

this paper presents an investigation into the dynamic properties of a deployable membrane structure for space altimeter applications. In particular, equations of motion are formulated which account for the viscous forces as well as the tensile ones which are normally addressed in a deployed membrane. Two commercially- available finite element codes, NASTRAN and ANSYS, are examined for their suitability in implementing the governing equations for three-dimensional membrane structures. In particular, the challenges of nonlinear governing equations and their implementation for a three-dimensional membrane structures are explored. the finite element formulation is used to evaluate the influence of membrane boundary shape and boundary tensile forces on the normal modes of the structure when atmospheric pressure is eliminated. the membrane under examination here is a prototype for the development of a possible on-orbit flight experiment in thin structure deployment, where such an experiment addresses necessary questions related to the use of this technology for membrane altimetry and synthetic aperture radar. the prototype includes multiple layers for signal radiation, grounding, and thermal protection, which must be kept parallel in the deployed configuration. Grids have emerged as paradigms for the next generation parallel and distributed computing. Computational grid can be defined as large-scale high-performance distributed computing environments that provide access to high-end computational resources. Grid scheduling is the process of scheduling jobs over grid resources. Improving overall system performance with a lower turn around time is an important objective of grid scheduling. In this paper a priority based scheduling algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm a new parameter named "priority" has been taken into consideration. the algorithm classifies the jobs into high, medium and low categories based on their priority. the priority assignment is done by considering the computational power of job and level of parallelism. the value for level of parallelism is assigned based on the amount of parallelism exhibited by the job and the amount of parallelism exhibited by the available resources. Generally, a job, which needs high computational power and exhibits low parallelism is given a high priority. Prioritizing the jobs in this way can improve the performance of computational grids. the effectiveness of our algorithm is evaluated through simulation results and its superiority over other known algorithms is demonstrated

Workflow technologies are becoming pervasive in that they enable the execution of business processes in distributed and ubiquitous computing environments. the execution of pervasive workflows raises transactional requirements due to their dynamicity and the need for relaxed atomicity. In this paper, we propose an adaptive transactional protocol for the pervasive workflow model developed in a previous work. the execution of this protocol takes place in two phases. First devices are assigned to tasks using an algorithm whereby workflow partners are selected based on functional and transactional requirements. the workflow execution further proceeds through a hierarchical coordination protocol managed by the workflow initiator and controlled based on a decision table computed as an outcome of the device assignment procedure. the resulting workflow execution is compliant with the defined consistency requirements and the coordination decisions depend on the transactional characteristics of the devices assigned to each task

In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of distributed control of shared resources in user-managed networks. this paradigm has become possible with the advent of broadband wireless networking technologies such as IEEE 802.11. One of the most popular applications in these networks is peer-to-peer (P2P) file exchange. Node cooperation can optimize the usage of shared "external" accesses to the Internet (set of links between the user network and the Internet). In a previous paper, we evaluated different agent-oriented distributed control schema, based on the concept of credit limits, on ideal mesh networks subject to uniform traffic. Each node in the mesh network chooses to behave as a cooperator or a defector. Cooperators may assist in file exchange, whereas defectors try to get advantage of network resources without providing help in return. Before this paper was completed, we observed that popular P2P protocols like eMule, Kazaa and BitTorrent were evolving towards the same credit-oriented strategies we previously proposed. Now, we realistically model both user network traffic and topology, and evaluate a new advanced agent-based distributed control scheme. the simulation results in this paper confirm on realistic networks the main conclusion in our previous research: autonomous node agents become cooperators in their permanent state when they take decisions from local information, checking that file exchange services offered to neighbor nodes do not exceed appropriate credit limits.

Grids technologies enable the deployment of complex data-intensive scientific applications. Nonspecific scientific codes may benefit from grid computing capabilities by (i) assembling codes in workflows (code parallelism) and (ii) processing large amounts of data (data parallelism). We designed MOTEUR, a service-based workflow manager, to describe data-intensive scientific applications in a compact framework and to efficiently process the resulting computations by transparently exploiting different parallelism levels. theoretical performances are analyzed and results are shown based on a real application to medical image databases processing

Web services security (WSS) has been approved as a standard by OASIS and widely adopted in the industry as a solution for enhancing the security of Web services. However, the performance of WSS remains a concern due to the additional security contents added to SOAP message and the extra service time for processing these security contents. this paper aims at clarifying this concern by conducting a performance evaluation of WSS. A simple Web service is designed and used for performance testing with a variety of WSS polices and message sizes. the test results are categorized, compared and analyzed to work out the overheads for individual security setting. this work is expected to provide an overview and guidance for WSS performance overhead
