the performances of modern distributed stream processing systems are critically affected by the distribution of the load across workers. Skewed data streams in real world are very common and pose a great challenge to these systems, especially for stateful applications. Key splitting, which allows a single key to be routed to multiple workers, is a great idea to achieve good balance of load in the cluster. However, it comes with the cost of increased memory consumption and computation overhead as well as network communication. In this paper, we present a new definition of metric to model the cost of key splitting for intra-operator parallelism in stream processing systems and provide a novel perspective to reduce replication factor while keeping both overall load imbalance and processing latency low. Similar to previous work, our approach treats the head and the tail of the distribution differently in order to reduce memory requirements. For the head, it uses our proposed notion of regional load imbalance to decide dynamically whether to make one more worker responsible for the heavy hitter or not. For the tail, it simply uses hash partitioning to keep the size of the routing table for the head as small as possible. Extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates that our approach provides superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art partitioning algorithms in terms of load imbalance, replication factor and latency over different levels of skewed stream distributions.

the mathematical model of a two-dimensional nonlinear case of contaminant migration to the filter traps in catalytic porous media in isothermal conditions is presented. the mathematical model takes into account the micro and the meso/macro scale factors of the mass transfer process. the numerical solution of the respective boundary value problem was obtained by the method of finite differences. parallel computing optimization was conducted for numerical sweep method as well as for Orleans Grain management. the appropriate algorithmic complexity of the parallel block sweep method was shown. the general architecture of a new application was described. the resulted software was implemented in Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. After a series of numerical experiments, the optimization performance results (speedup ratio and parallel efficiency) of a created solution were collected and discussed.

the top-down collaborative assembly design is a high parallel,dynamic and stochastic process. A concise design process model should be explored for effective process control and the system design of the top-down collaborative assembly design. In this paper the activity characteristics of top-down collaborative assembly design are analyzed,the typical sub-process models of collaborative design activities are constructed using Hierarchical Object-oriented Petri Net (HOOPN). the activity process of the top-down collaborative assembly design is modeled and the system architecture framework is built based on the activity process model.

Enterprise organizations use Data Warehouses (DWHs) analyze their performance. Performance is judged regarding the achievement of goals. DWH data models are well established. there exist numerous domain-specific modeling approaches. Enterprises also often model their goals in terms of formal or semiformal goal models. the problem is that these two aspects - the Data Warehouse and the Enterprise Goals - are described separately and not related to each other. We identify a need for combining these two aspects. If their relationship is made explicit, it can be used to enhance the way users access and interpret data in the DWH. To address this limitation, in this paper we introduce a weaving model between enterprise goals and DWH data. thus we present a domain-specific application of model weaving to an aspect of enterprise computing. We describe metamodels for both aspects as well as the weaving links between them, which allows to show the aspects separately but also in combination. We furthermore illustrate how to use the weaving links to create business metadata. Business metadata can be used in the DWH to describe the business context and implications of the data to the users, but is usually not available in today's DWHs. We apply our approach to a sample situation, which is used as a running example in the paper.

Frequent Itemset Mining (FIM) from large-scale databases has emerged as an important problem in the data mining and knowledge discovery research community. However, FIM suffers from three important limitations with the rapidly expanding of big data in all domains. First, it assumes that all items have the same importance. Second, it ignores the fact that data collected in a real-life environment is often inaccurate. third, it is also a data-intensive and computation-intensive process which makes the FIM algorithm very time-consuming over large datasets. To address these issues, we propose a parallel uncertain frequent itemset mining algorithm with spark (Pufim). Pufim firstly expresses item uncertainty by considering both the probability and weight, and calculates the maximum probability weight value of 1-items. Next, a distributed Pufim-tree structure is designed inspiring by FP-Tree for reducing the times of scanning the databases. Each node of Pufim-tree stores an item and its maximum probability weight value. Finally, experiments on publicly available UCI datasets demonstrate that Pufim achieves more prominent results than other related approaches across various metrics. In addition, the empirical study also shows Pufim has a good scalability.

In this paper, we propose a framework to automatically map single-device OpenCL programs to heterogeneous multi-device platforms with performance concerns. Our framework is based on the independence of work groups which built inside the OpenCL programming model and relies heavily on the knowledge of global memory access regions of work groups. So global memory access patterns of work groups are analyzed and an abstract representation CCRwS is designed to describe the exact memory access regions of each memory access statement in the kernels. A global memory access analyzer is designed to get CCRwSs by performing static program analysis on kernel codes. Based on CCRwSs, data transfer between multiple devices and host can be fully controlled by our framework. then a kernel code regenerator is designed to distribute the workload and perform architecture specific optimizations by code transformation. then we tested our framework on a platform with 2 Intel E5-2650 CPUs and 4 NVIDIA Tesla C2050 GPUs. Compared with the performance on single GPU, the kernels running on all the 6 devices can achieve about 4.5x faster.

In this paper, we present the benefits of using the clause concurrent of OmpSs when performing reductions, more specifically, when applied to the dot product (DOT) operations. We analyze its benefits through the implementation of different versions of the Conjugate Gradient (CG) method. We start from a parallel version of the code based on tasks and dependencies; later, we introduce the use of the concurrent clause, which allows to overlap the execution of tasks that have data dependencies among them. In this way, we want to show the benefits of the concurrent clause, which might be included in OpenMP standard as previously done with other OmpSs features. Our tests, performed on a single node of the (Intel-based) Marenostrum 4 Supercomputer and a single socket of the (ARM-based) Dibona cluster, show that the use of the concurrent clause may improve performance with respect to the version where only tasks and dependencies are used around 37% and 23% respectively.

Day after day, cloud technologies are more and more adopted by very diverse types of stakeholders, and this success creates a side-effect problem: the energy spent by this kind of infrastructures is growing bigger every day. With the objective of reducing energy consumption when programming applications for cloud infrastructures, we have implemented energy-aware mechanisms in the COMPSs Programming Model, inside the context of the ASCETiC Project. In this paper, we demonstrate that application-level scheduling can have a big impact on the energy consumed by an application when executed in a heterogeneous cloud. We have implemented an energy-aware scheduling mechanism in COMPSs, together with a versioning technique, and we have run experiments with a use case coming from the real estate sector that proves our hypotheses.

In the paper, we present a computational scheme for mathematical simulation of heat transfer processes in phase-changing multiscale media. In this problem, the correct approximation of heat flux jumps on phase transition boundaries is the main difficulty. Our approach is based on using a nonconforming multiscale finite element method to solve Stefan’s problem. We propose to divide a solution of Stefan’s problem into two components. A discontinuous component is determined in phase transition zones (fine level). the discontinuous component is approximated by a discontinuous Galerkin method. A continuous component is determined everywhere (coarse level). the continuous component is approximated by the classic finite element method. In this approach, a discrete analogue of Stefan’s problem can be solved in parallel. For the correct approximation of the heat flux jump on the phase transition boundary, we introduce a special lifting operator in the variational formulation of the multiscale discontinuous Galerkin method. Results of verification procedure for the developed computational scheme are shown using Stefan’s problem with the analytical solution. A validation procedure is performed using a comparative analysis of mathematical simulation results with physical experimental data. In the physical experiment, a phase change material sample was heated. At discrete time moments, the temperature was recorded using a sensor. We performed the mathematical simulation of the heat transfer process in the phase change material sample using experiment conditions. the difference between the calculated temperature field and physical experiment data was less than 5%. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Abstract only given, as follows. Need to increase productivity and reduce cost have lead to reengineering and automation of operations across corporations. Some of the applications involve imaging, document processing and routing. these tasks can be effectively automated using current genre of workflow automation products. Some other applications involve tasks that can be modeled in client-server style using traditional transactions. these can be supported by distributed transaction processing/monitoring systems. Finally, there is an important class of more complicated applications that involve heterogeneous but automated tasks, with varying levels of transaction properties, and performed at heterogeneous systems. We look at three aspects of the emerging technology of transactional workflow management that aims to support such applications: Identify properties of a class of multi-system applications and the environments that can be supported by transactional workflow systems: Discuss how a transactional workflow management system is different from, but "builds upon" the current transaction processing and workflow automation technologies: Discuss some of the relevant database research as well as software system and application prototyping experiences, especially those related to the extended/relaxed transaction models. Much of the discussion is based on our study of some real (mostly telecommunications) applications, and research and prototyping done at Bellcore in collaboration with U. of Houston and MCC's Carnot project.< >
