With the increasing popularity of virtual machine monitoring (VMM) technologies, performance variability among collocated virtual machines (VMs) can easily become a severe scalability issue. Particularly, it becomes a necessary for administrative team to control the performance degradation level in a shared environment when multiple I/O-intensive applications simultaneously request their I/O operations [1]. Nevertheless, adding several logical layers between the running applications and the physical storage system, as seen in contemporary virtualized storage devices, makes it considerably difficult to build a low overhead controlling mechanism for such systems (while each VM may running a separate operating system instance) [2]. In this paper, we propose a strategy based on control theory for managing the performance of several I/O requests, such as mean response times and read/write throughput in a consolidated environment where multiple virtual services can share access to a storage system. this scheme uses an approach for measuring the characterization of read/write performance attributes of each virtual services and also takes into account the run-time quality of service enforcement levels requested by them. this is formulated as an optimization problem where a reward function is defined to reduce the overall QoS violation incidents among all consolidated virtual services. Performance evaluation is carried out by comparing the proposed solution with the default embedded Linux controller across a range of emulated application workloads in scenarios with multiple consolidated virtual containers. the results confirm that the proposed solution can reduce the overall QoS violation incident rates in scenarios in which the platform operates at a significant traffic load comparing to the default policy in LXC engine.

With the emergence of the concept of big data, Hadoop MapReduce has been the de facto standard programming model for processing a large amount of data stored on the different cluster nodes in a distributed manner. It is known that the implementation of MapReduce operation with the default configuration yields a low number of parallel running jobs. In fact, poor resource utilization and overall low performance are usually induced by the default configuration. Although a myriad of works has been carried out in the literature for optimally configuring Hadoop MapReduce, the absolute vast majority of those works only consider offline and static configuration. those approaches are clearly ineffective as the load might change during execution requiring tuning again the configuration parameters. In this work, we rather focus on dynamical and adaptively configuring Hadoop MapReduce by changing the system level Maximum Application Master Resource in Percent (MARP) parameter on the fly. We show that adaptively tuning the MARP parameter yields a good trade-off between job parallelism and throughput. To achieve this, an optimal design which we call Adaptive Parameter Tuning of Hadoop (APth) based on a novel variant of the Tsetlin Automata is devised. Comprehensive experimental results show that the resources are optimally and appropriately utilized, resulting in better job parallelism and throughput. Furthermore, it is found that our APth approach spends 47% less time for job execution as compared to the default configuration.

An important asset in the skill set of any software project manager is the ability to somewhat accurately estimate the effort required to develop a software application. Acquiring this asset, however, requires a thorough understanding of the factors that may affect the accuracy of these estimates. this paper presents the results of an empirical study conducted to determine the causes of variation in the accuracy of effort estimations for different application and task types. A Pakistani software house that specializes in developing financial transaction processing applications is chosen for this empirical study. Actual and estimated values for software development effort are gathered and analyzed for four different types of applications - web-based, database, parallel processing, and telephony - each having six different types of tasks i.e. business-development, new features, usability, security, support, and performance. Over 1000 data points are considered. Analysis of the results reveals, for instance, that the effort for web-based applications is mostly underestimated while the effort for telephony applications is mostly overestimated. the underestimation in web-based applications is usually due to a failure to account for the learning curve associated with rapidly changing web technologies while the overestimation in telephony applications is usually due to a failure to account for the usage of third-party components.

the transmission line (TL)-based wave digital framework can be used to simplify engineering of complex microwave circuits like power dividers/splitters. In this paper, N-way Gysel power dividers (GPDs) are studied by derivation of the TL-based equivalent wave digital model (WDM) followed by utilizing MATLAB/Simulink environment. Based on this approach, a code is developed that predicts the scattering parameters of the analyzed GPD structures. Planar GPD structures containing 3-ways or 4-ways are investigated and a method for development of an equivalent circuit for the multiport parallel adaptor is presented. the analysis of the studied GPD structures begins with a simple geometry and can be extended to more complex geometries very easily. the simulation results are evaluated against TL-based simulations from Advanced Design System software. Inclusion of the multiport adaptor models with one port being dependent against the models with all independent ports reduces the total number of multipliers used in WDMs.

Previously, communications in parallel programs for High Performance computing (HPC) and distributed computing (DC) are mostly written with two-sided communication interfaces that are based on a pair of operations, Send and Receive. Since such interface requires explicit synchronization between both sides of the communication, techniques for communication optimization such as overlapping are not efficiently described in many cases. On the other hand, one-sided communication interface is becoming important as a method to describe asynchronous communications to enable highly overlapped communication with computation. As one of such interface, in this demonstration, Advanced Communication Primitives (ACP) is introduced. ACP is a portable interface that supports UDP, IBverbs of InfiniBand and Tofu library of K Computer. In addition to that, it is designed to be memory efficient. For example, with 10 thousand processes, the memory consumption of ACP over UDP is estimated to be less than 1MB. Since the number of computational elements is increasing more rapidly than the amount of available memory, this memory efficiency is becoming one of the keys for parallel programs in HPC and DC. To show this characteristics, we run ACP library on Raspberry Pi 2, and examine its performance and memory consumption.

In healthcare, safeguarding patient data integrity is paramount, necessitating robust deep learning models. this research focuses on bolstering the cyber security defenses of these models, particularly against adversarial attacks, through the application of the Localized Adversarial Feature Attack (LAFEAT) technique. Leveraging Graphics Processing Units (GPU) and the TensorFlow framework, the study explores algorithmic enhancements like the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM) and Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML). these techniques perturb input data gradients or adapt model parameters, enhancing resilience against adversarial perturbations. Additionally, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a metaheuristic optimization technique, is examined to fortify defense mechanisms further. parallel processing techniques, utilizing parallel GPU or distributed clusters, are implemented to expedite the optimization process, reducing computational burdens and enhancing scalability. Despite advancements, gaps remain in understanding how these models can be optimized for real-world healthcare applications, particularly in terms of balancing computational efficiency and robustness. the research demonstrates tangible benefits, with a significant 10% increase in success rates against adversarial attacks compared to baseline methods. Moreover, parallel processing implementation results in a 30% reduction in optimization time, improving the efficiency of cyber security defenses for deep learning models in healthcare. these numerical enhancements underscore the research’s value in fortifying healthcare systems against adversarial threats, ensuring the security and integrity of patient data while addressing existing gaps in the optimization of adversarial defenses in healthcare applications. the strengths of this research lie in its robust adversarial attack optimization techniques, integration of parallel processing for efficiency, and application to critical healthcare tasks. Cloud-based software testing presents unique challenges due to the distributed nature of cloud applications and the need for realistic environment simulation. this paper addresses these challenges by proposing two novel solutions. the first is a distributed testing framework specifically designed for cloud-based software. this framework leverages service virtualization and automated orchestration to efficiently test software components across multiple servers, reducing testing time and resource consumption while improving coverage. the second solution is a realistic environment simulation framework for cloud-based software testing. this framework employs emulation and simulation techniques to replicate diverse deployment scenarios, network conditions, and user interactions, enhancing the accuracy and effectiveness of performance, scalability, and security testing. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in testing efficiency, effectiveness, and accuracy compared to traditional methods. For instance, the distributed testing framework reduced testing time by 18.75% and lowered CPU and memory utilization. the realistic environment simulation framework improved response times under various load scenarios and increased throughput during scalability testing. these proposed solutions pave the way for more robust and reliable cloud-based software, ensuring a seamless user experience and driving the continued advancement of cloud technologies.

For many research endeavours, e-Infrastructures need to provide predictable, on-demand access to large-scale computational resources with high data availability. these need to scale with the research communities requirements and use. One example of such an e-Infrastructure is the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN -- ***) project, which supports Australia-wide research in and across the urban and built environment. this paper describes the architecture of the AURIN infrastructure and its support for access to distributed (federated) and highly heterogeneous data sets from a wide range of providers. We present how this architecture solution leverages the intersection of high throughput computing (HTC), infrastructure as a service (IaaS) Cloud services and big data technologies including use of NoSQL resources. the driving concept in this architecture and the focus of this paper is the ability for scaling up or down depending on resource demands at any given time. this is done automatically and on demand avoiding either under-or over-utilization of resources. this resource-optimization-driven infrastructure has been designed to ensure that peak loads can be predicted and successfully coped with, as well as avoid wasting resources during non-peak times. this overall management strategy has resulted in an e-Infrastructure that provides a flexible, evolving research environment that scales with research needs, rather than providing a rigid (static) end product.

the new science gateway MoSGrid (Molecular Simulation Grid) enables users to submit and process molecular simulation studies on a large scale. A conformational analysis of guanidine zinc complexes, which are active catalysts in the ring-opening polymerization of lactide, is presented as an example. Such a large-scale quantum chemical study is enabled by workflow technologies. Two times 40 conformers have been generated, for two guanidine zinc complexes. their structures were optimized using Gaussian03 and the energies processed within the quantum chemistry portlet of the MoSGrid portal. All meta- and postprocessing steps have been performed in this portlet. All workflow features are implemented via WS-PGRADE and submitted to UNICORE. © 2012 the authors and IOS Press.
