Many organizations have major investments in information systems, ranging from legacy programs written in COBOL to newer relational database management systems. these distributed heterogeneous information systems (DHISs) do not generally interoperate or share information. However, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software products are becoming available that can make DHISs appear as though they were a single integrated system. MITRE recently completed an internal project that examined two COTS DHIS integration products in a test environment consisting of six information systems, and two clients running on eight platforms in three cities. Based on this prototyping effort, we believe that there are many applications in which DHIS integration technologies would be appropriate. Our presentation will include an overview of our prototypes, a description of the work we have done, and a summary of the lessons learned.

Focuses on transactional workflows, i.e., the advanced transaction technology required to (i) ensure the reliability of tasks in a workflow, and the correctness and reliability of concurrent workflows, and (ii) support the specification and management of extended transactions models. In addition, the author discusses research and development at GTE Laboratories to produce a Transaction Specification and Management Environment (TSME) that can satisfy such requirements. He also discusses the integration of DOM and TSME technologies.< >

Abstract only given, as follows. Need to increase productivity and reduce cost have lead to reengineering and automation of operations across corporations. Some of the applications involve imaging, document processing and routing. these tasks can be effectively automated using current genre of workflow automation products. Some other applications involve tasks that can be modeled in client-server style using traditional transactions. these can be supported by distributed transaction processing/monitoring systems. Finally, there is an important class of more complicated applicationsthat involve heterogeneous but automated tasks, with varying levels of transaction properties, and performed at heterogeneous systems. We look at three aspects of the emerging technology of transactional workflow management that aims to support such applications: Identify properties of a class of multi-system applications and the environments that can be supported by transactional workflow systems: Discuss how a transactional workflow management system is different from, but "builds upon" the current transaction processing and workflow automation technologies: Discuss some of the relevant database research as well as software system and application prototyping experiences, especially those related to the extended/relaxed transaction models. Much of the discussion is based on our study of some real (mostly telecommunications) applications, and research and prototyping done at Bellcore in collaboration with U. of Houston and MCC's Carnot project.< >

MCM technology can be usefully exploited in a number of areas in the design of large scale distributed memory MIMD processors. Within the interconnection technologies for multichip assemblies (ITMA) project two demonstrators have been selected for different applications within a parallel computer. the first demonstrator circuit is an extended switch element using a multichip module technology. the MCM usess four Elite switch devices connected on a silicon substrate. Flip chip bonding is used. A summary of device characteristics is given. the second demonstrator integrates a RISC CPU chip set along with a communications coprocessor. the resulting module contains all the components required for a MIMD processing node, withthe exception of the DRAM and DRAM controller. the two demonstrator circuits are discussed.

the author reviews a decade's work on message passing MIMD (multiple instruction-multiple data) parallel computers in the areas of hardware, software, and applications. He concludes that distributed memory parallelcomputing works, and describes the implications of this for future portable software systems. He claims that the message passing model was and will continue to be very successful. the vendors will build better hardware with lower communication latency and reasonable tcomm/tcalc 10. the author views the message passing software model as 'assembly-language', which in many cases one can and should hide from the user with a software model 'nearer' that of the problem. Optimizing compilers will translate from a problem-oriented software model convenient for users to the message passing level supported by the machine. this latter level will continue to be used directly for applications for difficult cases which are not efficiently supported in the high-level software.

the application environment and hardware base the authors address are Ada applications running on a testbed of modern networked multiprocessor workstations. the authors address the question of how an operating system's communication facilities should be designed to best support Ada intertask communication running on this hardware. Ada has directives specifically designed to support parallel operation of tasks by facilitating communication and synchronization between them. Support for these directives using the communication facilities of the BIGSAM distributed operating system is presented. the BIGSAM kernel provides message based communication for the processes that run on it, a mechanism that is well matched to the Ada intertask communication primitives. the authors analyze the distributed operating system message passing functionality required to support the intertask communication and synchronization primitives on which the Ada rendezvous is based.

the design of a debugging and performance analysis system that includes a specification language for process-level events and hardware for nonintrusive identification of these events during the execution of parallel and distributedapplications for a nonshared memory system is presented. the design is based on a formal event/action model and a layered architecture model that have been previously presented. Background, related work, and specification, and identification of events are discussed.

the authors present the design and implementation of an asynchronous remote operation execution facility, futures, that retains the benefits of the remote procedure call (RPC) abstraction but allows execution to proceed locally in parallel with remote execution and provides extensive support for managing replies. It is shown how this facility can be easily used to support many common interprocess communication styles, including RPC, multicast, broadcast, returning incremental results, and the multiplexing of multiple remote computations. A flow control mechanism for futures is described.
