Internet performance is highly correlated with key economic development metrics of a region. According to World Bank, the economic growth of a country increases 1.3% with a 10% increase in the speed of the Internet. therefore, it is necessary to monitor and understand the performance of the Internet links in the region. It helps to figure out the infrastructural inefficiencies, poor resource allocation, and routing issues in the region. Moreover, it provides healthy suggestions for future upgrades. therefore, the objective of this paper is to understand the Internet performance and routing infrastructure of South Asian countries in comparison to the developed world and neighboring countries using end-to-end Internet performance measurements. the South Asian countries comprise nearly 32% of the Internet users in Asia and nearly 16% of the world. the Internet performance metrics in the region are collected through the PingER framework. the framework is developed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, USA and is running for the last 20 years. PingER has 16 monitoring nodes in the region, and in the last year PingER monitors about 40 sites in South Asia using the ubiquitous ping facility. the collected data is used to estimate the key Internet performance metrics of South Asian countries. the performance metrics are compared with the neighboring countries and the developed world. Particularly, the TCP throughput of the countries is also correlated with different development indices. Further, worldwide Internet connectivity and routing patterns of the countries are investigated to figure out the inconsistencies in the region. the performance analysis revealed that the South Asia region is 7-10 years behind the developed regions of North America (USA and Canada), Europe, and East Asia.

the breast tumor has become a common and prevalent disease. If it can be found timely, and treated early, the life risk of patients will be reduced, and the survival rate will be improved. the accurate assessment of the breast tumor, benign or malignant, is the primary key to cure the disease in practical clinical diagnosis. the paper proposes a risk assessment method of breast tumors based on text data of ultrasound reports, using practical ultrasound reports of patients with breast tumors from a 3A grade hospital in Shanghai, and focuses on an innovative point of depending on reinforcement learning to extract index values from text data of ultrasound reports. First, this method chooses normative text data which index values are complete as external files, iterates to compute the reward function of the reinforcement learning algorithm with index parameters, and associate external files to dynamically update the corresponding index values to ultimately form the structured data. And then, this method inputs the structured data into three models based on machine learning algorithms-Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest-to assess the risk, benign or malignant, of the breast tumor. the experiments show the accuracy of every classification algorithm increases by nearly 10% via the method based on reinforcement learning, comparing with the common structured approach relying on dependency parsing, which reaches up to 84% in practical text data of ultrasound reports. Because of this method, manual workload can drop a lot, doctors can improve the accuracy of diagnosis and decrease misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis, and patients can reduce unnecessary surgical pain.

As a knowledge-intensive process, choreography is increasingly done in a collaborative and distributed environment. However, current research on digital choreography is mainly focused on developing digital tools to facilitate the design of movements, spaces, effects, etc. while little work has been done on capturing and supplying knowledge to support decision-making in particular when multiple experts are involved in the choreography process. In this research, a knowledge-based intelligent system is proposed to effectively capture useful knowledge from a complex choreography process and to provide intelligent support to various experts in a distributed environment. Specifically, the system framework of a distributed and collaborative choreography scheme enabled by advanced computing technologies is proposed. A knowledge representation model is developed based on design rationale to represent both procedural and causal knowledge. A prototype system is also designed in this work and its key technologies are developed. A literature search has shown that little work has been found on knowledge-based intelligent support for choreographers. A preliminary evaluation of the methods in a real-world example shows that they have a range of advantages and more importantly this works opens up opportunities for this new area of work.

Real-time network simulation enables simulation to operate in real time, and in doing so allows experiments with simulated, emulated, and real network components acting in concert to test novel network applications or protocols. Real-time simulation can also run in parallel for large-scale network scenarios, in which case network traffic is represented as simulation events passed as messages to remote simulation instances running on different machines. We note that substantial overhead exists in parallel real-time simulation to support synchronization and communication among distributed instances, which can significantly limit the performance and scalability of the hybrid approach. To overcome these challenges, we propose several techniques for improving the performance of parallel real-time simulation, by eliminating parallel synchronization and reducing communication overhead. Our experiments show that the proposed techniques can indeed improve the overall performance. In a use case, we demonstrate that our hybrid technique can be readily integrated for studies of software-defined networks. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

the paper studies the efficiency of nine state-of-the-art algorithms for scheduling of workflow applications in heterogeneous computing systems (HCS). the comparison of algorithms is performed on the base of discrete-event simulation for a wide range of workflow and system configurations. the developed open source simulation framework based on SimGrid toolkit allowed us to perform a large number of experiments in a reasonable amount of time and to ensure reproducible results. the accuracy of the used network model helped to reveal drawbacks of simpler models commonly used for studying scheduling algorithms.

Speed-Up Computational Finance Simulations with OpenCL on Intel Xeon Phi 22nd

Computational finance is a domain where performance is in high demand. In this work, we investigate the suitability of Intel Xeon Phi for computational finance simulations. Specifically, we use a scenario based ALM (Asset Liability Management) model and propose a novel OpenCL implementation for Xeon Phi. To further improve the performance of the application, we apply several optimization techniques (data layout and data locality improvement, loop unrolling) and study their effects. Our results show that the optimized OpenCL code deployed on the Phi can run up to 135x faster than the original scalar code running on an Intel i7 GPP. Furthermore, we also show that choosing the optimal work-item/work-group distribution has a compelling effect on massively parallel and heavily-branching code. Overall, these results are significant for the computational finance specialists, as they enable a major increase in model accuracy, because 10x more simulations can be performed in less than a 10th of the original time.

Components for High Performance computing are continuously increasing to achieve more performance and satisfy scientific application users demands. To reduce the Mean Time To Repair in these systems and increment high availability, Fault Tolerance (FT) solutions are required. the checkpoint/restart approach is a widely used mechanism in FT solutions. One of the most used technique to take checkpoints in parallel applications implemented using Message Passing Interface is the coordinated checkpoints. In this paper a Fault Tolerance Manager (FTM) for coordinated checkpoint files is presented, to provide users automatic recovery from failures when losing computing nodes. this proposal makes the configuration of FT simpler and transparent for users without knowledge of their application implementation. Furthermore, system administrators are not required to install libraries in their cluster to support FTM. It takes advantage of node local storage to save checkpoints, and it distributes copies of them along all the computation nodes, avoiding the bottleneck of a central stable storage. this approach is particularly useful in IaaS cloud environments, where users have to pay for centralized stable storage services. this work is based on RADIC, a well-known architecture to provide fault tolerance in a distributed, flexible, automatic and scalable way. Experimental results shows the benefits of the presented approach in a private cluster and a well-known cloud computing environment, Amazon EC2.
