In this paper we consider the problem of building parallel methods for three-dimensional human organs' geometrical reconstruction based on the active contour method. the idea of computing decomposition is based on opportunity to visit all layers in both directions from the starting layer and use several starting layers that have initial contours generated from the reference body geometrical model. Using ITK library we have implemented parallel kidney segmentation algorithms. the first parallel version gave acceleration of about 1.6 for 2 threads on CPU, and the second - a significant increase in efficiency with an increase in the number of points in the contour, but in the range 3.2 times for 8 threads on CPU. We are planning to transfer the algorithm on the GPU.

Master node fault-tolerance is the topic that is often dimmed in the discussion of big data processing technologies. Although failure of a master node can take down the whole data processing pipeline, this is considered either improbable or too difficult to encounter. the aim of the studies reported here is to propose rather simple technique to deal with master-node failures. this technique is based on temporary delegation of master role to one of the slave nodes and transferring updated state back to the master when one step of computation is complete. that way the state is duplicated and computation can proceed to the next step regardless of a failure of a delegate or the master (but not both). We run benchmarks to show that a failure of a master is almost "invisible" to other nodes, and failure of a delegate results in recomputation of only one step of data processing pipeline. We believe that the technique can be used not only in Big Data processing but in other types of applications.

COST OPTIMAL STRATEGIES OF HIGH TEMPERATURE thERMAL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS IN COMBINED HEAT AND POWER applications 10

As variable generation electricity sources, namely wind and solar, increase market penetration, the variability in the value of electricity by time of day has increased dramatically. In response to increase in electricity demand, natural gas "peaker plants" are being added to the grid, and the need for spinning and non spinning reserves have increased. Many natural gas, and other heat source based, power plants exist as combined heat and power (CRP), or cogeneration, plants. When built for industrial use, these plants are sized and run based on heat needs of an industrial facility, and are not optimized for the value of electricity generated. With the inclusion of new, less expensive thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the heating and electricity usage can be separated and the system can be optimized separately. the use of thermal energy storage with CHP improves system economics by improving efficiency, reducing upfront capital expenditures, and reducing system wear. this paper examines the addition of thermal energy storage to industrial natural gas combined heat and power (CRP) plants. Here a case study is presented for a recycled paper mill near Los Angeles, CA. By implementing thermal energy storage, the mill could decouple electric and heat production. the mill could take advantage of time-of-day pricing while producing the constant heat required for paper processing. this paper focuses on plant economics in 2012 and 2015, and suggests that topping cycle industrial CHP plants could benefit from the addition of high temperature (400-550 degrees C) energy storage. Even without accounting for the California incentives associated with implementing advanced energy storage technologies and distributed generation, the addition of energy storage to CHP plants can drastically reduce the payback period below the 25 year expected economic lifetime of a plant. thus thermal energy storage can make more CRP plants economically viable to build.

Spiking neural P systems (in short, SN P systems) is a class of distributed parallel computing models. parallel computation of matrix operations has been supported on some new computing devices such as GPU, which provides a promising way to simulate the parallel computation of SN P systems. In this paper a matrix representation method of parallel computation for SN P systems is developed. In firing mechanism of SN P systems, the delay factor plays the role of controlling the receiving of spikes in neurons and the opportunity of emitting the spikes after the firing. In order to achieve the parallel computation of SN P systems, several matrices or vectors are introduced to decompose the firing mechanism of neurons. the parallel computation procedure of SN P systems can be achieved by the operations of the matrices or vectors. Two examples are used to illustrate the parallel computation procedure using the matrix operations. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

Code offloading strives for increasing the energy efficiency and execution speed of mobile applications on resource-constrained mobile devices. First approaches considered only a code offloading between two (or three) tiers, executing code either locally on the mobile device or remotely on a powerful server in the vicinity or in a distant cloud. However, new execution environments comprise multiple tiers, containing highly distributed heterogeneous resources. We present in this paper our Code Bubbling Offload System (CoBOS). CoBOS targets n-tier environments containing highly distributed heterogeneous resources with different performance characteristics and cost implications. In such n-tier environments, it is very costly for a resource-constrained mobile device to gather a global view on available resources. As a result, we propose the novel concept of code bubbling. Code bubbling moves code dynamically and adaptively towards more powerful and more distant tiers, enabling an efficient and scalable code offloading in n-tier environments. Each tier makes autonomous decisions to execute code in the tier or forward it further to the next tier. To support such a recursive escalation of code along autonomous tiers, CoBOS offloads self-contained offload requests that possess all of the required information for the processing. Our real-world evaluation shows that CoBOS decreases the energy consumption by 77% and the execution time by 83% for code offloading in n-tier environments. © 2016 ACM.

Model reuse is a key issue to be resolved in parallel and distributed simulation when developing military simulation applications at present. However, component model built by different domain experts usually have diversiform interfaces, couple tightly and bind with simulation platforms and specific applications closely. As a result, they are difficult to be reused across different simulation platforms as well as applications. In addition, traditional model reuse ways lack consideration about reusability efficiency of similar reusable models. As for developing warship models in practical application, there also lack pragmatic method to describe its simulation space from conception space. To address the problem, this paper first proposed the parameterization-configurable framework for reusable component model that supports similar models once developed but multiple reused adapting to varied function requirement. Based on this framework, then our reusable model development approach for warship model is elaborated, which contains three phases: (1) design the warship configurable function set based on capacity demand;(2) use CMPA (Capacity, Mission, Process, Action) description method to map the function set from conception model to simulation model;(3) implement and encapsulate the model with the reusable simulation model development specification. the approach provides a pragmatic technical means for developing warship component reusable models in complex military simulation application, which helps improving efficiency of development and could be referenced for other similar models.

the spatial-three-dimensional problem of two-phase filtration of incompressible fluid was being considered within the Buckley-Leveret model in view of the gravity and without capillary forces in variables "pressure-water saturation". the advanced modified alternating triangular iterative method (MATM) that takes into account the availability of sources (sinks) in a relatively small number of nodes with delta-shaped (generalized) functions was considered for the discrete model that approximates the boundary-initial filtration problem. the numerical solution of computationally laborious task in the layer with significant heterogeneity of permeabilitywas performed, which are changed to four magnitude orders within the layer with a significant advantage in required iterations to achieve a given accuracy - in 10 and more times on grids with up to 3.2 million nodes. the parallel algorithm of numerical implementation of the developed sequential variant of advanced MATM was proposed in this paper which are based on the decomposition method in two spatial directions. It is performed on a multiprocessor system with shared memory - the computer system of the Southern Federal University in Taganrog that are contained 2048 cores with the peak performance 18.8 teraflops. the significant advantage of the proposed parallel algorithm was shown, compared to traditionally-used methods for numerical solution of these problems - the time simulation of the flooding process of layer system was reduced in tens of times.

We review several questions at the intersection of Big Data, Clouds and HPC with the large scale simulations usually run on supercomputers and the target of the exascale initiative. We base this on an analysis of many big data and simulation problems and a set of properties -the Big Data Ogres -characterizing them where we distinguish data and model properties. We consider broad topics: What are the application and user requirements? e.g. is the data streaming, how similar are commercial and scientific requirements? What is execution structure of problems? e.g. is it dataflow or more like MPI? Should we use threads or processes? Is execution pleasingly parallel? What about the many choices for infrastructure and middleware? Should we use classic HPC cluster, Docker or OpenStack? Where are Big Data (Apache) approaches superior/inferior to those familiar from Grid and HPC work? the choice of language -C++, Java, Scala, Python, R highlights performance v. productivity trade-offs. What is actual performance of Big Data implementations and what are good benchmarks? Is software sustainability important and is the Apache model a good approach to this? the difference between capability and capacity computing on HPC clusters.
