Fast multicore simulators are extremely useful in evaluating design alternatives and enabling early software development. Among the state-of-the-art multicore simulators, Simics is a very popular used one both in academia and industry. It has a powerful debugging system, and also provides an accelerator to support multithreaded or distributed simulation. However, this kind of parallel mechanism mainly aims at speed up distributed systems. It is not suitable for the shared-memory multicore systems which are much more commonly used. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel mechanism to improve the simulation speed of shared-memory multicore systems. More importantly, our approach is compatible with other optimizations and exist debugging systems used in Simics. Experimental results show that our parallel approach achieves an average speedup of 9.6x (up to 12.2x) when running SPLASH-2 kernel on a 16-core host machine. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Sharing the Semantic Web data in proprietary datasets in which data is encoded in RDF triples in a decentralized environment calls for efficient support from distributed computing technologies. the highly dynamic ad-hoc settings that would be pervasive for Semantic Web data sharing among personal users in the future, however, pose even more demanding challenges for the enabling technologies. We extend previous work on a hybrid P2P architecture for an ad-hoc Semantic Web data sharing system which better models the data sharing scenario by allowing data to be maintained by its own providers and exhibits satisfactory scalability owing to the adoption of a two-level distributed index and hashing techniques. Additionally, we propose efficient distributed processing of SPARQL queries in such a context and explore optimization techniques that build upon distributed query processing for database systems and relational algebra optimization. We anticipate that our work will become an indispensable, complementary approach to making the Semantic Web a reality by delivering efficient data sharing and reusing in an ad-hoc environment. © 2013 IEEE.

Many fields need computing the similarity between objects, such as recommendation system, search engine etc. Simrank is one of the simple and intuitive algorithms. It is rigidly based on the random walk theorem. there are three existing iterative ways to compute simrank, however, all of them have one problem, that is time consuming;moreover, with the rapidly growing data on the Internet, we need a novel parallel method to compute simrank on large scale dataset. Hadoop is one of the popular distributed platforms. this paper combines the features of the Hadoop and computes the simrank parallel with different methods, and compars them in the performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Software development offers various techniques to improve the quality of code. One possibility is Refactoring. It goals are restructuring software code without changing its behavior and improving systems design to make it more extensible and reusable. this can be achieved by very simple renaming of variables and classes up to complex restructuring activities, such as the replacement of inheritance by compositions. Especially large software systems e.g. ERP systems (particular SAP) are developing into heterogeneous application environment over time. For this reason they have to be able to respond to new challenges at the system operating departments continuously, which requires a high degree of extensibility and reusability. this paper summarizes a practical example to show the complexity of SAP FICO systems. It illustrates how the applications source code can be prepared to be more extensible by using specific Refactoring. Moreover, the relationship between Refactoring in ABAP and automated testing of changes in SAP are shown. © 2013 IEEE.

Simple and friendly operation panel, intelligent algorithm, high performance control and driving circuit and precision and reliable plant are the necessary conditions for music playing robot design. In this paper, a hierarchical control structure, host controller (PC) and local controller (FPGA), is proposed to implement the anthropomorphic piano robot control with parallel controlling of two hands and ten fingers. In order to simplify the programming on the host controller and increase the performance of the whole system, the actuators of the hands (linear motors) and fingers (servo motors) are controlled and driving by local controllers, the FPGA-based controllers. the host PC is in charge of to integrate and encode the music codes of playing music to command the robot via the local controller, namely FPGA controller or distributed control module. the host controller is programmed with an intelligent algorithm to generate the music control code and an interactive man-machine interface. Giving a music score, the intelligent algorithm will generate a series of optimum positions commands for the hands and fingers of the piano robot to play the piano. the series of optimum positions commands are programmed with crashing protection and minimum movement for the hands and fingers to anthropomorphize the robot. After the codes receiving, the local controller will quick decode the commanding such as the position of two hands, opening angle of ten fingers and key rapping of ten fingers to control the driving circuits of actuators of the hands and fingers.

With the advance of MEMS sensors and wireless communication technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) become ubiquitous. However, design, monitor and control of WSNs are not trivial tasks. To assist the design and monitoring of a WSN, computer aided software tools are essential;both of designers and users need these tools to model and simulate WSNs. Most of existing simulators have been developed for designers;while a few of user-oriented tools are confined to a specific platform or system. In this paper, a modular framework is proposed for modeling and simulation of WSNs, and the aspects of monitoring and visualization are focused. the framework serves for both of designers and users. the programming solutions to some generic functions have been provided. the developed system is open to adapt special modules. To maximize scalability and flexibility of the system, the Eclipse platform and Java have been used for the development. the resulted integrated system accommodates different operating systems such as Windows and Linux. It is capable of integrating other plug-ins developed in various languages such as Java, C, C++ and Matlab. the user-friendly Graphic User Interface (GUI) is developed to create and visualize the acquired real-time data of WSN. the embodied methodologies are capable of predicting the behaviors of objects in network. the integrated visualization system has been illustrated through a case study simulation.

Grid and cloud computing have changed the IT landscape in the way we access and manage IT infrastructures. the use of computing resources has become essential for many applications in various areas. Both technologies provide easyto- use and on-demand access to large-scale infrastructures. the high number of submissions to “Topic 6: Grid, Cluster and Cloud computing-reflected the importance of the research area. the papers addressed key challenges regarding design, deployment, operation and use of Grid and cloud infrastructures. Moreover, several innovative algorithms and methods for fundamental capabilities and services that are required in a heterogeneous environment, such as adaptability, scalability, reliability and security, and to support applications as diverse as ubiquitous local services, enterprise-scale virtual organizations, and internet-scale distributed supercomputing were proposed. Finally, many experimental evaluations and use-cases delivered an insight into the deployment in real-world scenarios and showed interesting future application domains. Each submission was reviewed by at least four reviewers and, finally, we were able to select nine high-quality papers. the papers were grouped in four sessions that are briefly summarized in following.

the performance of parallel distributed data management systems becomes increasingly important with the rise of Big Data. parallel joins have been widely studied both in the parallel processing and the database communities. Nevertheless, most of the algorithms so far developed do not consider the data skew, which naturally exists in various applications. State of the art methods designed to handle this problem are based on extensions to either of the two prevalent conventional approaches to parallel joins - the hash-based and duplication-based frameworks. In this paper, we introduce a novel parallel join framework, query-based distributed join (QbDJ), for handling data skew on distributed architectures. Further, we present an efficient implementation of the method based on the asynchronous partitioned global address space (APGAS) parallel programming model. We evaluate the performance of our approach on a cluster of 192 cores (16 nodes) and datasets of 1 billion tuples with different skews. the results show that the method is scalable, and also runs faster with less network communication compared to state-of-art PRPD approach in [1] under high data skew.

parallel and distributed computing has been under many years of development, having played a central role in shaping different research and application trends such as grid computing, cloud computing, green computing, etc. the broad applications of parallel and distributed computing have also made the relevant research field interdisciplinary, cross boundaries among architectures, communications, computing, algorithms and programming. the objective of this special issue is to address some recent developments in this interdisciplinary area. the special issue is based on the presentations made at the 13th international conference on parallel and distributed computing, applications and technologies (PDCAT 2012) held in Beijing, 14-16 December 2012.

the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is largely used for image and video compression in standards like JPEG and MPEG2. Its simplicity coupled with the fact that it can be computed faster than the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) makes it an attractive option for image and video compression. Consequently a lot of research is in progress to determine novel architectures and algorithms for faster DCT computation having high throughput so that it can even be used for real time applications. For example, when transmitting and receiving videos, which have been compressed using MPEG2, one would like to receive the video, without any buffering delay. In other words, one requires such an architecture, which provides the DCTQ coeffecients at a consistent rate, with very low latency between two coeffecients. As such, a highly parallel and pipelined architecture employing 57 pipeline stages and using fast multipliers and adders is proposed in this work. the proposed DCT Processor is implemented in Spartan 3E FPGA.
