Many current location-based applications (LBA) such as friend finder services use information about the positions of mobile users. So-called location services (LSs) have been proposed to manage these mobile user positions efficiently. However, managing user positions raises privacy issues, in particular, if the providers of LSs are only partially trusted. therefore, we presented the concept of private position sharing for partially trusted systems in a previous paper [1]. the basic idea of position sharing is to split the precise user position into a set of position shares of well-defined limited precision and distribute these shares among LSs of different providers. the main contributions of this paper are two extended position sharing approaches that improve our previous approach in two ways: Firstly, we reduce the predictability of share generation that allows an attacker to gain further information from a sub-set of shares to further increase the position precision. Secondly, we present a position sharing algorithm for constrained movement scenarios whereas the existing approach was tailored to open space environments. However, open space approaches are vulnerable to map-based attacks. therefore, we present a share generation algorithm that takes map knowledge into account. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Bag-of-Tasks applications are often composed of a large number of independent tasks, hence, they can easily scale out. With public clouds, the (dynamic) expansion of resource capacity in private clouds is much facilitated. Clearly, cost efficiently running BoT applications in a multi-cloud environment is of great practical importance. In this paper, we investigate how efficiently multiple clouds can be exploited for running BoT applications and present a fully polynomial time randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) as a novel task assignment algorithm for BoT applications. the resulting task assignment can be optimized in terms of cost, make span or the tradeoff between them. the objective function incorporated into our algorithm is devised in the way the optimization objective is tunable based on user preference. Our task assignment decisions are made without any prior knowledge of the processing time of tasks, i.e., non-clairvoyant task assignment. We adopt a Monte Carlo sampling method to estimate unknown task running time. the experimental results shows our algorithm approximates the optimal solution with little overhead.

An efficient resource management mechanism is important in a heterogeneous system to discover available resources, to allocate an appropriate subset of resources to applications, and to map data or tasks onto selected resources. the key component, tasks scheduling, draws our attention. Make span is the principal concern many existing researches. But, other QoS requirements are also important in more and more realistic applications. Like Grid service it is expected that the service provider be reliable, robust, or highly available. In this study, an existing availability-aware scheduling model called SSAC is investigated first. then, we proposed an optimization approach to increase the availability and to reduce the make span of tasks running in heterogeneous systems. three quantitative conditions are used to guide the optimization. Our experimental results show that compared with three existing solutions (Minmin, SSAC and ACO), our algorithm significantly improves the availability and performance of multiclass tasks running in heterogeneous systems.

Scientists often have constraints from their experiments such as deadlines and budgets. For that reason, Job scheduling problem in Grid environments is not only important but also a challenging task. Both requirements - execution time and cost - are conflictive each other because faster resources usually involve higher costs. In this research, we compare two novel multiobjective algorithms from different fields - Complex Networks and Swarm approach - in an attempt to tackle the complex distributed infrastructure of Grid computing. On one hand, Multiobjective Small-World Optimization (MOSWO) is a multiobjective adaptation from algorithms based on the Small-World phenomenon, which is characteristic of complex scale-free networks. On the other hand, a novel swarm algorithm is the Multiobjective Gravitational Search Algorithm (MOGSA) inspired on gravitational attraction. Although both algorithms render good performance, MOGSA dominates in all the cases. Moreover, MOGSA attains improved performance with real schedulers such as the Workload Management System (WMS) from the most used European middleware gLite and the well-known Deadline Budget Constraint (DBC) algorithm from Nimrod-G.

the molecular docking is the focus of practical applications such as protein engineering and drug design. A docking algorithm is a procedure that predicts the assembly of two molecules like a key and a lock. To screen a large library of molecules, a docking algorithm requires high performance computing. parallel and distributed applications have long been recognized as powerful computational tools and effective in the field of bioinformatics. Jini technology is one of the powerful infrastructures network for building and deploying distributed systems that are organized as a federation of services. JavaSpaces is one of the services that come bundled with Jini, it is a shared associative memory accessible by the network and allows an easily developing of a massively parallel and distributed applications. this paper discusses the use of the JavaSpaces service to build a distributed application in order to minimize the running time of a molecular docking algorithm.

Service process orchestration using workflow technologies have led to significant improvements in generating predicable outcomes by automating tedious manual tasks but suffer from challenges related to the flexibility required in work especially when humans are involved. Recently emerging trends in enterprises to explore social computing concepts have realized value in more agile work process orchestrations but tend to be less predictable with respect to outcomes. In this paper we use IT services management, specifically, incident management for large scale systems, to investigate the interplay of workflow systems and social computing. We apply a recently introduced concept of Social Compute Units, and flexible teams sourced based on various parameters such as skills, availability, incident urgency, etc. in the context of resolution of incidents in an IT service provider organization. Results from simulationbased experiments indicate that the combination of SCUs and workflow based processes can lead to significant improvement in key service delivery outcomes, with average resolution time per incident and number of SLO violations being at times as low as 52.7% and 27.3% respectively of the corresponding values for pure workflow based incident management. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Modern HPC applications put forward significant I/O requirements. To deal with them, MPI provides the MPI-IO API for parallel file access. ROMIO library implements MPI-IO and provides efficient support for parallel I/O in C and Fortran based applications. On the other hand, Java based MPI-like libraries such as MPJ Express and F-MPJ have emerged but they lack parallel I/O support. Little research has been done to provide Java based ROMIO-like libraries due to the non-availability of MPI-IO-like API for the Java language. In this paper, we take the first step towards the development of parallel I/O API in Java by evaluating the newly introduced Java NIO API versus the legacy Java I/O API. We propose two simple approaches for performing parallel file I/O using NIO and evaluate them on two different computational platforms. the implementation of proposed approaches exploits the view buffers concept of NIO API to perform efficient array based file I/O operations from multiple processes. We report encouraging speedups and suggest that design of a parallel I/O API in Java should be based on the NIO API.

In this paper, we implement a novel parallelized approach of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) based face recognition algorithm on GPU. High performance rates have been achieved through maximizing the resource exploitation available in the GPU. the launch of GPU programming tools like Open source Computation Language (OpenCL) and (CUDA) have boosted the development of various applications on GPU. In this paper we implement a parallelized LBP algorithm on GPU using OpenCL programming tools. Programs developed under the OpenCL enable us to utilize GPU for general purpose computation with increased performance efficiency in terms of execution time. the experimental results based on the implementation on AMD 6500 GPU processor are observed to increase the computational performance of the system by to 30 folds in case of 1024×1024 images. the relative computational efficiency increases with increase in the size of the Image. this paper addresses several parallelization problems related to memory access and updating, divergent execution paths, understanding and realizing the OpenCL's concurrency and Execution models.

When learners access web-based educational systems, they often take advantage of what current web browsers offer: multiple tabs with different pages. Whether they are solving an exercise or learning a whole new topic, they can concurrently browse other relevant objects in the educational system or even resources outside the system, on the “wild” Web. this behavior goes unnoticed or it is only estimated in the traditional web usage mining, where it is supposed that the user opens only one page at a time. However, if we could record the parallel browsing behavior, we could better understand the user's activity, goals and improve learner model employed for personalization. the paths through resources (including spawning new tabs and switching between them) of many learners also express relevance between these resources and this can be leveraged in applications such as recommendation to other learners browsing similar learning objects. In this paper, we introduce a model for parallel browsing behavior based on events tracked with client-side scripting. We realized the proposed model in the ALEF educational system, which we use in several courses and evaluate learner behavior in the system.

With rapid development of sensor technologies and wireless network infrastructure, research and development of traffic related applications, such as real time traffic map and on-demand travel route recommendation have attracted much more attentions than ever before. Both archived and real-time data involved in these applications could potentially be very big, depending on the number of deployed sensors. Emerging Cloud infrastructure can elastically handle such big data and conveniently providing nearly unlimited computing and storage resources to hosted applications, to carry out analysis not only for long-term planning and decision making, but also analytics for near real-time decision support. In this paper, we propose Smart Traffic Cloud, a software infrastructure to enable traffic data acquisition, and manage, analyze and present the results in a flexible, scalable and secure manner using a Cloud platform. the proposed infrastructure handles distributed and parallel data management and analysis using ontology database and the popular Map-Reduce framework. We have prototyped the infrastructure in a commercial Cloud platform and we developed a real-time traffic condition map using data collected from commuters' mobile phones.
