the aim of this paper was to obtain a model to predict new students' academic performance taking into account socio-demographic and academic variables. the sample contained records of first semester students at a School of engineering from a range of students' generations. the data was divided into three groups: students who passed none or up to two courses (low), students who passed three or four courses (middle), and students who passed all five courses (high). By using data mining techniques, the Naïve Bayes classifier and the Rapid miner software, we obtained a model of almost 60% accuracy. this model was applied to predict the academic performance of the following generation. After checking the results of the predictions, 50% were classified as correct. However, we observed that, for students of certain engineering majors of high and low groups, the model's accuracy was higher than 70%.

Although distributed systems are widely used nowadays, their implementation and deployment is still a time-consuming, error-prone, and hardly predictive task. In this paper, we propose a methodology for producing automatically efficient and correct-by-construction distributed implementations by starting from a high-level model of the application software in BIP. BIP (Behavior, Interaction, Priority) is a component-based framework with formal semantics that rely on multi-party interactions for synchronizing components. Our methodology transforms arbitrary BIP models into Send/Receive BIP models, directly implementable on distributed execution platforms. the transformation consists of (1) breaking atomicity of actions in atomic components by replacing strong synchronizations with asynchronous Send/Receive interactions;(2) inserting several distributed controllers that coordinate execution of interactions according to a user-defined partition, and (3) augmenting the model with a distributed algorithm for handling conflicts between controllers preserving observational equivalence to the initial models. Currently, it is possible to generate from Send/Receive models stand-alone C++ implementations using either TCP sockets for conventional communication, or MPI implementation, for deployment on multi-core platforms. this method is fully implemented. We report concrete results obtained under different scenarios.

MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF HOT EXTRUSION METAL FORMING PROCESS USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK AND ANOVA

In this paper, a feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are applied to a hot metal extrusion process, establishing a black box model as well as analyzing the effects of relevant process parameters on required forging load, under different operating conditions. Some finite element simulation data on extruding ck-45 steel, adopted from a published research paper, were used to train the neural model employing Levenberg-Marquardt learning algorithm. Die angle (15 degrees-75 degrees), friction coefficient between billet-die material pair (0.4-0.8), punch velocity (168-203 mm/s), and billet temperature (1000 degrees C-1260 degrees C) were selected as the inputs, while the extrusion load (tone) was considered as the network's output. Based on the results during modeling attempts, a 4-10-10-1 size neural network has been decided on as the appropriate architecture of the process model. Testing predictive accuracy of the developed model was also done using a new data set (8 data samples), which has not been used in the training phase. the comparative errors with respect to the desired FEM simulations are all in acceptable ranges (less than 12%) thereby the network's generalization capabilities were confirmed. Having established the appropriate neural model, analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was then applied to the original training data base to find and recognize the level of importance of each parameters and their possible dual interactions on the extrusion loading force within 95% of confidence interval (alpha=0.05). Based on the obtained inferences, the best optimal combination of parametric settings which leads to the minimum required extruding load was then revealed and recommended. the optimally minimized extrusion force was then predicted by the trained network model. Arterial geometry variability is present both within and across individuals. To analyze the influence of geometric parameters on maximal wall shear stress (MWSS) in the human carotid artery bifurcation, the computer simulations were run to generate the data pertaining to this phenomenon. In our work we evaluate various prediction models for modeling relationship between geometric parameters of the carotid bifurcation and the MWSS. the results revealed the highest potential of using the neural network model for this prediction task. the achieved results and generated explanations of the prediction model represent progress in assessment of stroke risk for a given patient's geometry in real time.

In this paper, we establish an effort prediction model using an artificial neural network (ANN) for complementing missing values. We add missing values to the data via collaborative filtering using the method of Tsunoda et al.'s method. In addition, we perform an evaluation experiment to compare the accuracy of the ANN model with that of the MRA model using Welch's t-test. the results show that the ANN model is more accurate than the MRA model, since the mean errors of the ANN are statistically significantly lower.

For software products to succeed they have to satisfy customer expectations, including usability aspects of the software. Early during the development cycle important design decisions are made for projects that are typically on restricted schedules and budgets. there is a need to support this decision-making process, by empowering the decision makers with better tools and techniques. In this research we present a prediction approach that allows potential stakeholders to examine and choose among different user interfaces based on our usability prediction model. the research tries to establish correlations between predictive usability metrics and the results of usability tests performed by users on 8 COTS systems. the correlations are expressed in the form of fuzzy models. Fuzzy models have been proven to be convenient in decision-making processes.

the decision of an organization to introduce product line engineering depends on a sound and careful analysis of risks and return on investment. the latter is computed by an economic model, which relies on high quality input and must reflect the envisioned migration strategy sufficiently. To facilitate risk analysis, this paper applies Monte-Carlo simulation to an existing product line economic model. Additionally, the model is extended by the support of product line generations that is, considering the degeneration of product line infrastructures and taking reinvestment into an existing product line into account. the practical application of the model is demonstrated by an industrial case study

Over the last, years, software quality has become one of the most important requirements in the development of systems. Fault-proneness estimation could play a key role in quality control of software products. In this area, much effort has been spent in defining metrics and identifying models for system assessment. Using this metrics to assess which parts of the system are more fault-proneness is of primary importance. this paper reports a research study begun with the analysis of more than 100 metrics and aimed at producing suitable models for fault-proneness estimation and prediction of software modules/files. the objective has been to find a compromise between the fault-proneness estimation rate and the size of the estimation model in terms of number of metrics used in the model itself. To this end, two different methodologies have been used, compared, and some synergies exploited. the methodologies were the logistic regression and the discriminant analyses. the corresponding models produced for fault-proneness estimation and prediction have been based on metrics addressing different aspects of computer programming. the comparison has produced satisfactory results in terms of fault-proneness prediction. the produced models have been cross validated by using data sets derived from source codes provided by two application scenarios.
