Time windowed data structures for graphs

We present data structures that can answer time windowed queries for a set of timestamped events in a relational event graph. We study the relational event graph as input to solve (a) time windowed decision problems for monotone graph properties, such as disconnectedness and bipartiteness, and (b) time windowed reporting problems such as reporting the minimum spanning tree, the minimum time interval, and the graph edit distance for obtaining spanning forests. We also present results of window queries for counting subgraphs of a given pattern, such as paths of length 2 (in general graphs) and paths of length 3 (in bipartite graphs), quadrangles and complete subgraphs of a fixed order or of all orders ≥ 3 (i.e., cliques of size ). these query results can be used to compute graph parameters that are important for social network analysis, e.g., clustering coefficients, embeddedness and neighborhood overlapping. © 2019, Brown University. the article investigates the application of the arithmetic compression method based on the division into subsections depending on the frequency of occurrence of symbols in the digital processing of speech data. the general problems of applying data compression in digital speech processing systems are revised. Authors propose a new method that uses statistical information about the frequency of occurrence of characters to partition the data into subsegments that can be more efficiently compressed using arithmetic compression. the main algorithms of the method are described. Since the method of arithmetic data coding used in the study requires high-precision calculations, long arithmetic is used in its software implementation. A way to optimize the calculation algorithm is proposed, given the general inefficiency of arithmetic coding using the methods of long arithmetic, in terms of both time spent and the size of the result. A comparison of the proposed method with other speech data compression algorithms was performed. the nature of the dependence of the required coding accuracy on the amount of input data and the dependence of the total encoding-decoding time on the size of the input data was discovered. the results of the study showed that the proposed method is more effective compared to other methods. However, in practical application it is necessary to take into account that the method has limitations. In particular, while increasing the number of subsections, the processing time increases, and while decreasing the number, the size of the compressed data increases. It is also important to take into account phonetic, syntactic and phraseological features of specific speech data, since different languages have different frequency of use of certain symbols. A new method of speech data compression can be used to improve transmission efficiency and improve audio file storage technologies. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

the unique potential to integrate functional elements into fibre-reinforced components combined with the recent progress in the simulation models of composite materials provides new perspectives for reliability improvement of the next generation components. Such combination is presented on the example of a carbon-fibre reinforced composite plate with integrated vibration measurement and excitation systems. the investigated structure was manufactured using integrated layers for positioning, contacting and isolating of the active elements. the integrated elements enable an online estimation of the structural dynamic behaviour and its damage-dependent changes. the article considers the identification problem of diagnostic models enabling a precise interpretation of the measured vibration responses. An approach based on the generation of classifiers by means of inductive machine learning algorithms is applied. At the baseline phase, modal properties are measured that correspond to the undamaged state of the structure. Using these experimental data, a simulation model of the structure was fitted by means of a mixed numerical experimental technique and used for the generation of multiple vibration patterns resulting from different mass distributions. the unique combination of experimental and numerical results enables a generation of high resolved learning datasets for machine learning algorithms using a minimum amount of experimental data. the verification of the estimated classifiers by means of the achievable diagnostic performance is firstly conducted theoretically using standardised validation techniques and a high performance is identified. then, at the inspection phase, the performance of the whole diagnostic system is additionally experimentally confirmed based on the dynamic response resulting from different unseen structural disturbances.

Embedded consumer devices are increasing their capabilities and can now implement new multimedia applications reserved only for powerful desktops a few years ago. these applications share complex and intensive dynamic memory use. thus, dynamic memory optimizations are a requirement when porting these applications. Within these optimizations, the refinement of the Dynamically (de)allocated data Type (or DDT) implementations is one of the most important and difficult parts for an efficient mapping onto low-power embedded devices. In this paper, we describe a new automatic optimization approach for the DDTs of object-oriented multimedia applications. It is based on an analytical pre-characterization of the possible elementary DDT blocks, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm to explore the design space and to select the best implementation according to different optimization criteria (i.e., memory accesses, memory footprint and energy consumption). Our results in real-life multimedia applications show that the best implementations of DDTs can be obtained in an automated way in few hours, while typically designers would require days to find a suitable implementation, achieving important savings in exploration time with respect to other state-of-the-art heuristics-based optimization methods for this task.

Deep learning models trained on medical images from a source domain (e.g. imaging modality) often fail when deployed on images from a different target domain, despite imaging common anatomical structures. Deep unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) aims to improve the performance of a deep neural network model on a target domain, using solely unlabelled target domain data and labelled source domain data. However, current state-of-the-art methods exhibit reduced performance when target data is scarce. In this work, we introduce a new data efficient UDA method for multi-domain medical image segmentation. the proposed method combines a novel VAE-based feature prior matching, which is data-efficient, and domain adversarial training to learn a shared domain-invariant latent space which is exploited during segmentation. Our method is evaluated on a public multi-modality cardiac image segmentation dataset by adapting from the labelled source domain (3D MRI) to the unlabelled target domain (3D CT). We show that by using only one single unlabelled 3D CT scan, the proposed architecture outperforms the state-of-the-art in the same setting. Finally, we perform ablation studies on prior matching and domain adversarial training to shed light on the theoretical grounding of the proposed method.

Automatic methods for discovering program runtime and proving program termination have always been a challenging problem in computer science. We present here a novel and systematic approach for calculating an upper bound of the maximum runtime of functions for a non-trivial class of programs. the proof is based on an induction over a tree of execution traces - a new mathematical data structure. As a consequence, this can also show termination for these functions. the approach uses symbolic-numeric algorithms over a novel mathematical data structure, and can systematically find the maximum runtime for a wide class of functions.

the crystallization process and crystal structure of the phase change material TiSbTe alloy have been successfully established, which is essential for applying this alloy in phase change memory. Specifically, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses of the film annealed in situ were used in combination with selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and radial distribution function (RDF) analyses to investigate the structural evolution from the amorphous phase to the polycrystalline phase. Moreover, the presence of structures with medium-range order in amorphous TST, which is beneficial to high-speed crystallization, was indicated by the structure factors S(Q)s. the crystallization temperature was determined to be approximately 170 degrees C, and the grain size varied from several to dozens of nanometers. As the temperature increased, particularly above 200 degrees C, the first single peak of the rG(r) curves transformed into double shoulder peaks due to the increasing impact of the Ti-Te bonds. In general, the majority of Ti atoms enter the SbTe lattice, whereas the remainder of the Ti atoms aggregate, leading to the appearance of TiTe2 phase separation, as confirmed by the SAED patterns, high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images and the corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mappings.

Visual examination of volumetric medical data sets in virtual reality offers an intuitive and immersive experience. To further increase the realism of virtual environments, haptic feedback can be added. Such systems can help students to gain anatomical knowledge or surgeons to prepare for specific interventions. In this work, we present a method for direct visual and haptic rendering of volumetric medical data sets in virtual reality. this method guarantees a continuous force field and does not rely on any mesh or surface generation. Using a transfer function, we mapped computed tomography voxel intensities to color and opacity values and then visualized the anatomical structures using a direct volume rendering approach. A continuous haptic force field was generated based on a conservative potential field computed from the voxel opacities. In a path following experiment, we showed that the deviation from a reference path on the surface of the rendered anatomical structure decreased with the added haptic feedback. this system demonstrates an immersive exploration of anatomy and is a step towards patient-specific surgical planning and simulation.
