We deal with the problem of ranking news events on a daily basis for large news corpora, an essential building block for news aggregation. News ranking has been addressed in the literature before but with individual news articles as the unit of ranking. However, estimating event importance accurately requires models to quantify current day event importance as well as its significance in the historical context. Consequently, in this paper we show that a cluster of news articles representing an event is a better unit of ranking as it provides an improved estimation of popularity, source diversity and authority cues. In addition, events facilitate quantifying their historical significance by linking them with long-running topics and recent chain of events. Our main contribution in this paper is to provide effective models for improved news event ranking. To this end, we propose novel event mining and feature generation approaches for improving estimates of event importance. Finally, we conduct extensive evaluation of our approaches on two large real-world news corpora each of which span for more than a year with a large volume of up to tens of thousands of daily news articles. Our evaluations are large-scale and based on a clean human curated ground-truth from Wikipedia Current Events Portal. Experimental comparison with a state-of-the-art news ranking technique based on language models demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach.

the Multipurpose Composites Group (MCG), along with an industrial partner Sanjel Energy Services Inc. (Sanjel) is developing a coupled pressure-testing and digital image correlation (DIC) system for the testing and analysis of internally pressurized carbon steel pipes. In the context of this industry, 'failure' is considered to be the formation and propagation of a crack in a second cylindrical layer of cement external to the pressurized pipe. Simple elastic models predict failure in the cement layer prior to any yielding in the steel pipe. Certain mechanical additives to the cement are predicted to improve a number of mechanical properties, namely a decrease in tensile modulus, an increase in tensile strength, and an increase in fracture toughness. Initial testing has included Brazilian tensile tests with DIC strain measurement, along with Brazilian tensile tests of pre-cracked specimens to determine the critical stress intensity factor of the cement. the next phase of this project is to implement image capture for DIC strain measurement and visualization along with pressure testing, including both static and fatigue testing. Both the image capture and pressure control will be automated with custom-built software control, while 2D and 3D (via stereo image capture) DIC strain measurement will be performed using commercial software.

Emotional state analysis is an interdisciplinary arena because of the many parameters that encompass the complex neural structure and electrical signals of the brain and in terms of emotional state differences. In recent years, emotional state data have been examined by using data-driven methods such as Empirical Mode Decomposition as well as classical time-frequency methods. Although Empirical Mode Decomposition has many advantages, it has disadvantages such as being designed for univariate data, prone to mode mixing, and providing signal via a sufficient number of the local extrema. To overcome these disadvantages, in this study, the Noise-Assisted Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition has been shown to classify the emotional state using electroencephalographic signals.

p53 tumour suppressor network plays the key role in DNA damage response of the cell. We present a comprehensive 2-dimensional oscillator model for p53 network dynamics. the model is reduced from the known 17-dimensional two-phase model of p53 network, which shows temporary oscillatory behaviour under DNA damage type of Double Strand Breaks. the introduced oscillator model shows the same qualitative dynamics of two-phase model of p53 network, such as bistability and oscillations, when the parameters are adjusted accordingly. With the help of the identified oscillator in p53 network, we introduce a new oscillator perspective: p53 network has an oscillator in the centre, which other systems in the cell manipulate this oscillator to contribute to cell fate. the introduction of such low dimensional oscillator model will make it possible to study p53 network and the effects of other biological systems in the context of oscillations.

Navigation in an information space is a natural way to explore and discover its content. Information systems on the Web like digital encyclopedias (e.g., Wikipedia) are interested in providing good navigational support to their users. To that end, navigation models can be useful for estimating the general navigability of an information space and for understanding how users interact with it. Such models can also be applied to identify problems faced by the users during navigation and to improve user interfaces. Studying navigation on the Web is a challenging task that has a long tradition in our scientific community. Based on large studies, researchers have made significant steps towards understanding navigational user behavior on the Web identifying general usage patterns, regularities, and strategies users apply during navigation. the seminal information foraging theory has been developed suggesting that people follow links by constantly estimating their quality in terms of information value and cost associated with obtaining that value by interacting with the environment. Furthermore, models describing the network structure of the Web like the bow tie model, and the small world models have been introduced. these models contributed valuable insights towards characterizing the underlying network topology on which the users operate and the extent to which it allows efficient navigation. In the context of information networks, researchers have successfully modeled user navigation resorting to Markov chains and to decentralized search. With respect to the users' navigational behavior and their click activities to traverse a link, researchers have found a valuable source of information in the log files of Web servers. Click data has also been collected by letting humans play navigational games on Wikipedia. With this data, researchers tested different navigational hypotheses;for example, (i) if humans tend to navigate between semantically similar articles, (ii) if they

this piece of research deals with an interestingly observed interdisciplinary challenging educational issue associated with children's learning performance phenomenon in classrooms. more precisely, it addresses an answer for the critically challenging educational question : how any of the students could focus on teachers' interactive speaking in noisy environmentally overcrowd class?. more precisely. More specifically, it deals with the critical educational issue of What is the effect of the school environment on students considering Cocktail Party Effect(CPE) on learning achievement and its relation to the Educational Practice theory. Moreover, this work presents a systematic approach for evaluation of an interdisciplinary phenomenal problem of human's selectivity auditory scene analysis. Interestingly, in the educational field practice this Cocktail Party Effect results in the Cocktail Party Problem(CPP) dealing with an auditory perception phenomenon. Additionally, it is noticed that introduced proposal for active audition modeling is motivated by analogous active vision processes, such as that observed during Optical Character Recognition(OCR). In nature, observed OCR as well as pattern recognition processes have to be carried out under non ideal environmental learning condition(under effect of noisy data). More particularly, CPP is motivated to be solved by adopting selective auditory attention or equivalently selective hearing which is a type of selective attention and involves the auditory system of the nervous system. Accordingly, children's Selective hearing is characterized as the action in which considerable children's ability to focus their attention inside classroom on a specific source of teacher's spoken wording signals. Commonly, this process experienced as following one speaker(teachers' speech) in the presence of another noisy overcrowded signals resulting in CPE at classroom. Ordinal transformation is a technique of ordinal optimization that utilizes a simplified model for performance evaluation and ranking to further reduce computational effort. this presentation-only paper will be focused on investigating how simplified models of different variability levels affect ranking. the simulation-based study investigates capacity allocation of a re-entrant line in the context of semiconductor manufacturing by using two queuing network approximation models, Jackson network approximation (JNA) and queuing network analyzer (QNA). Both are based on parametric decomposition method and JNA is a special case of QNA with a unity squared coefficient of variation because of the exponential assumptions. Mean cycle time (MCT) is the performance index. Simulation studies of a five-station re-entrant line demonstrate that QNA capture of heterogeneous variability greatly improves the MCT ranking correlation of top-10 allocations out of 415 designs by almost 8 times over JNA at the cost of less than 3% computation time increase, i.e., the value of keeping a good model of variability from simplification.

Modelling dietary intake of older adults can prevent nutritional deficiencies and diet-related diseases, improving their quality of life. Towards such direction, a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM)-based modelling approach that models the interdependencies between the factors that affect the Quality of Nutrition (QoN) is presented here. the proposed FCM-QoN model uses a FCM with seven input-one output concepts, i.e., five food groups of the UK Eatwell Plate, Water (H2O), and older adult's Emotional State (EmoS), outputting the QoN. the weights incorporated in the FCM structure were drawn from an experts' panel, via a Fuzzy Logic-based knowledge representation process. using various levels of analysis (causalities, static/feedback cycles), the role of EmoS and H2O in the QoN was identified, along with the one of Fruits/Vegetables and Protein affecting the sustainability of effective food combinations. In general, the FCM-QoN approach has the potential to explore different dietary scenarios, helping health professionals to promote healthy ageing and providing prognostic simulations for diseases effect (such as Parkinson's) on dietary habits, as used in the H2020 i-Prognosis project (***).

this paper describes a technique for language-independent prosody modeling using unsupervised prosodic labeling in HMM-based speech synthesis and shows its applications to low bit-rate speech coding and speaker-independent voice conversion. In the proposed technique, sequences of prosodic features are roughly quantized at a phone level and the resultant indexes are used as the prosodic context for the model training. the conventional HMM-based speech synthesis requires accurate prosodic labels corresponding to the speech samples where manual modification is necessary to improve the modeling accuracy, which sometimes takes extra costs and limits its application. In contrast, the proposed technique creates the prosodic label from the training data itself and can apply not only to the speech synthesis but also to the speech coding and voice conversion. Subjective experimental results show the effectiveness of the use of the quantized F0 context without manual prosodic labeling.

the paper presents the contextualization of the Anatomical pathology (AP) workflow focusing on nonconformity during the reception and registration steps. context is described by contextual elements related to heterogeneous sources such as the actor, the task, the situation and the local environment. the objective of this work is the application of contextual graph to the "workflow" of an AP exam, limited to the steps of reception and registration. the main point is the context-based representation of practices developed by actors instead of an object-centered view on the workflow to identify and ultimately avoid risky practices leading to nonconformity and prejudice. therefore contextual graphs can be considered as a tool for monitoring the quality of work in an AP department, the actions, detection and correction of nonconformities as well as a base for intelligent software creation that links different modules in medical care.
