In this paper, the authors explore the characteristics and requirements of digitally supported 'green' building design. Well planned, integrated and interdisciplinary digital design practices play a vital role in the iterative processes of sustainable building design. Unlike traditional ways of working, the management of design information and process integration in green building design involves a wider range and a larger number of consultants utilizing sophisticated environmental modelling and analysis systems. To understand the complexities surrounding information management in this context, the authors focus on issues relating to: 1) information exchange and model management, and 2) multidisciplinary design process coordination. Different aspects of sustainable design modelling methodologies are explored in relation to technology requirements, information exchange, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Finally, the literature is synthesised in a conceptual roadmap framing the key factors identified by the study.

Affective science conducts interdisciplinary research into the emotions and other affective phenomena. Currently, such research is hampered by the lack of common definitions of terms used to describe, categorise and report both individual emotional experiences and the results of scientific investigations of such experiences. High quality ontologies provide formal definitions for types of entities in reality and for the relationships between such entities, definitions which can be used to disambiguate and unify data across different disciplines. Heretofore, there has been little effort directed towards such formal representation for affective phenomena, in part because of widespread debates within the affective science community on matters of definition and categorization. To address this requirement, we are developing an Emotion Ontology (EMO). the full ontology and generated OWLDoc documentation are available for download from https://***/svn/trunk/under the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY 3.0).

the paper presents the results of a comprehensive research program on tsunamiinduced forces on infrastructure located in coastal areas. this research project is the result of an interdisciplinary investigation (coastal and structural engineering) which spanned over the past five years which included field data reconnaissance missions, as well as analytical, experimental and numerical modeling of extreme hydrodynamic forces on buildings and their component structural elements. the purpose of this research and engineering effort is to help elucidate the complex hydrodynamic mechanisms of impact of such extreme loadings on buildings and to properly quantify loads and further derive and propose new formulations for the design of structures located in the vicinity of the shoreline in tsunami-prone coastal areas. the research is particularly important in the Canadian context due to the significant risk of tsunami attack, particularly along the coastline of Western Canada (British Columbia).

A device that levitates a steel ball beneath an electromagnet is used for educational purposes at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Students in the course "Mechatronics" engage in a set of laboratory exercises withthe device to reinforce classroom learning. Mechatronics is a senior-level course that introduces the interdisciplinary design of smart systems. Students in the electrical engineering and mechanical engineering programs take the course together, and the material is taught by a team of instructors from both academic departments. the Magnetic Levitation experiments are the primary means of teaching the classical analog control portion of the course. Other aspects of the course involve interfacing microcontrollers with sensors and actuators, and digital control. the magnetic levitation device fits easily on a two-person workbench and requires a power supply and oscilloscope. An infra-red emitter / detector pair is used to sense ball position for a feedback compensator. Students first learn classical control theory in a co-requisite course, "Dynamic modeling and Control." modeling principles are introduced in the context of the magnetic levitation system as an unstable plant to be controlled. the system can be simulated by models ranging from simply linear to more complex to teach the trade-off between model fidelity and model development effort. the students derive the nonlinear governing equations and then linearize the equations and develop the transfer function of the plant. Students design a compensator and simulate the resulting stabilized system with Matlab and Simulink software. Students build their compensator on a solderless project board to levitate the steel ball. A proven lead-type compensator using two resistors and a capacitor is readily provided to students that struggle withtheir own compensator design so that all teams may enjoy the fruit of a successful experiment. As a laboratory aid, the magnetic levitation system

contextual Graphs are a context-based formalism used in various real-world applications. they allow a uniform representation of elements of reasoning and of contexts for describing different human tasks such as troubleshooting and interpretation. A contextual graph represents a task realization. Its paths represent the different ways of reaching this realization, each way corresponding to a practice developed by an actor realizing the task. In this paper, we revisit the classical distinction between prescribed and effective tasks, procedures versus practices, logic of functioning versus logic of use, etc. in the light of this formalism. We discuss the position of the practice model with respect to the task model using an example involving troubleshooting a problem with a DVD player and another example involving the collaborative construction of an answer, and place this within the context of some other applications developed in the formalism of contextual Graphs.
